My Top 10 Comic/Superhero movies...
May. 11th, 2008 01:35 amBehind the cut is my Top 10 Comic Book/Superhero movies, because I like lists. With vids and reasons.
1. BATMAN BEGINS
Who: Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Katie Holmes (let's just forget about her)
Why: Trust me to pick up the most messed up superhero of the bunch as my favorite. Christian Bale is incredible as this irrevesibly damaged man who choses to act out his trauma outwards. This is superhero movie as an arthouse character study, no wonder it's done by the man who did Memento (one of my favorite movies ever, also about an irreversibly damaged man seeking vengeance, always futile)...Gorgeous art design, grim story, hero you can't help both love and be terrified by and just...seriously. Amazing.
Favorite scene: When Batman gets hit with panic drugs

2. SPIDERMAN 2
Who: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco
Why: By far my favorite of the Spiderman movies, this one almost made me cry. I guess I really love stories of people pushed almost to the edge, and this is movie really about Peter Parker the human, as opposed to his becoming a superhero (as in the first one). It's all about the cost he incurs, and how much a good person will keep going despite all the hurt he endures and how much he wants to quit and cannot.
Favorite Scene: Either the one with Spidey with his mask off on the train (mmm, vulnerability!) or the very end, when Mary Jane runs away from the wedding to his horrible flat. LOVE.
Vid:
3. IRON MAN
Who: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges
Why: I just did a write-up on it, but a short version? It is a perfect combination of aventure, and a story of someone growing up, and unresolved/resolved UST, and a charming/messed-up hero. Perfect.
Favorite Scene: The very ending. 'I am Iron Man.' GLEEEEEEEEEE
Vid: (It's obviously kinda hard to find vids, yet)
4. CONSTANTINE
Who: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weitz
Why: A dark, fantasy-borderline story that has interesting things to say about heaven and souls etc. A comic book-based film noire, really, with a wearily noble protagonist and an awesome heroine. And visually gorgeous. Oh, and yet another one with the ship which is so UST and unspoken.
Favorite Scene: Keanu Reeves goes to hell. My eyes bugged out of my head.
Vid:
5. SUPERMAN RETURNS
Who: Brendan Routh, James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey
Why: I always found Superman boring like a box of bricks. Before this movie. It looked like visual poetry and presented this wholly unusual, alien character and made me care...while yet being wholly mythic.
Favorite Scene: Any time he flies. Or when he is weakened by kryptonite and is crawling in the mud.
Vid:
6. SPIDERMAN
Who: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco
Why: Not as complicated and dark as Spiderman2 (but miles better than the forgettable Spiderman3), but a wonderful, nuanced origin story. I never wanted to see this movie, my first superhero movies in years, but I emerged out of the theater in love, because the story never forgot the humans under the identities and masks.
Favorite Scene: I will be super-cliche and say the upside-down kiss.
Vid:
7. THE INCREDIBLES
Who: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson
Why: So fun, and funny, and clever, and with a whole huge heart. If you don't like this, you have no soul :)
Favorite Scene: No capes!
Vid:
8. KRRISH
Who: Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra
Why: Bollywood's first superhero movie, this is irresistably cheesy (yes, both irresistable and cheesy) fun take on the superhero genre. When's the last time you've seen a superhero dance in the circus?
Favorite Scene: Krrish does that swordfighting practice
Vid: (LOL, the song is from Death Note)
9. X-MEN 2
Who: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, a whole bunch of other people...
Why: The only one of X-Men movies I don't mind (I just don't get the thing about them), this is a fun, popcorny movie with a lot of eye-candy. Now, if only I got the thing about Wolverine...
Favorite Scene: Jean dies. Cyclops is unhappy. Heee. So awesome. Yes, I am a Cyclops/Jean girl.
