Fandom Ate My Brain. It was a happy meal.
Oct. 9th, 2005 07:39 pmEnded seeing Serenity twice more this weekend (count is up to 5, yikes!) and meeting up with
winterspel,
repr0b8,
kitsah and others.
Nothing is as much fun as talking to people who do not mind discussing which Boomer they like better or what crack is Veronica on for picking Duncan over Logan.
Serenity gets better every freaking time. This time, I did wonder what on earth Mal & Co (including Aeryn-like Zoe) are going to do now? All their job contacts are dead, and I doubt new ones will be eager to materialize (I doubt Inara can really go back anyway. She was on the ship with people who pissed off the Alliance and actively participated in all their activities. I think her client pool is likely to dry up). I also loved having Zoe and Jayne wonder if Mal got through. We always follow the "hero" and never see what happens to those who stay behind. I also liked the deal with the modification of reality: at first with the soothing narrator voice we think we hear an objective narration about the origins of the world, and then we realize it's an Alliance teacher. And then the Simon-River escape turns out to be a recording as well. And of course, I do wonder about the Operative (who of course let them go as his job was to keep secrets and not take vengeance). In some ways, what Mal did to him was about the worst thing he could have done: taken his dream (which really reminds me of totalitarian utopian societies: very Communist notion about building a better tomorrow through blood) and shown him the true nightmare it is.
In Veronica Mars related news, it was REALLY fun to discuss VM with
winterspel. She brought up a really interesting point (and one which I never realized before): Logan is attracted to older, tough, sophisticated women (Lilly, Veronica, Kendall). I suppose it's because it's such a contrast to his younger, doormat of a mother.
winterspel also pointed out that both Veronica and Logan are really strong people except when it comes to their emotions (I actually think his inability to tone down his intensity is partially responsible for the demise of their relationship: it's too much too soon for Veronica who is terrified to let go and connect. With Duncan she can withdraw as much as she likes and is in no danger of being overwhelmed by her own powerful emotions). I was also glad to find out I was not the only one who thought Duncan had the emotive power of a block of really plain wood. Hmmm.
In other news, One Tree Hill continues to be a snorefest.

Date: 2005-10-10 12:30 am (UTC)1. I was talking about Serenity at dinner with my family, and my father started talking about the witty dialogue, tight writing, interesting characters, and the many levels on which is it awesome (not in those words). My dad hardly ever gushes that way, so yes, one of the best movies ever.
2. I love shipping Veronica/Weevil, because I can love both Logan and Duncan. Though yes, I do love Logan more.
I was talking to my mom who said, and I quote "I never thought I'd say this, but I kind of like Logan and Veronica together". Now, last year I would get into huge fights with her over how they have so much more chemistry than Duncan and Veronica, so this is a huge step.
3. I was shamefully telling a friend that I had the strange urge to watch the first season of The O.C., to which she replied "No! The O.C. is idiotic! Watch One Tree Hill, it's so much better!".
Good times had by all.

I can't believe I'm contemplating seeing Serenity again...gods, I want a sequel to this film. A novel. A miniseries. Something. Anything. I must know what happens next!!!

Date: 2005-10-10 02:34 am (UTC)Oh yes. I am rewatching Firefly now and am getting so frustrated that there isn't any more!
I had a huge blast as well! At last, someone who think it's cool to see a bright yellow Xterra :P I had so much fun!

Date: 2005-10-10 01:12 am (UTC)But I'm with you on that whole sequence of feints, classroom to lab, to rescue to video... Nifty, nifty, nifty work.
I wondered if the operative guy isn't going to end up becoming part of the crew. They wouldn't fully trust him, of course, but I can see them ending up on the same side enough to actually work together. He seems like kind of a Book in the making.
I tend to agree with you about Inara as well. She must be on lots of black lists now. Still, my impression was she was teaching and/or perhaps administrating at whore HQ, rather than entertaining clients per se, so perhaps the guild could protect her. And the question is what would she do on Serenity? Can't see her going back to seeing clients like she was, and however cute she might have looked in her warrior outfit, she isn't really a fighter. She's not a pilot or a mechanic either. Not that she couldn't contribute some much needed brains, but still it leaves her pretty much hanging around as Mal's woman. Would that really suit either of them?

Date: 2005-10-10 02:33 am (UTC)Whore HQ? Heee. I do love the fact she was teaching and not practicing. I don't think Mal would have a problem with that line of work.
I think even a Guild would have its limits protection-wise though. I am pretty sure, seeing The Operative's MO, that if Mal didn't rescue her, TO would have killed her.
And I think she could certainly have a role on the ship: she was certainly really instrumental in "The Trash's" heist so she could fit in that way.

Date: 2005-10-10 02:36 pm (UTC)Actually, I sort of do too. It's a bit odd to realize there are real people attached to the keyboards :)
No pics as I didn't bring my camera (lame, I know).

Except I imagine that the eye patch is just for effect because it would be tiring watching all of season 1 of VM in 2-3 days with only one eye.

Date: 2005-10-11 12:19 am (UTC)And I know what you mean, I want to know what happens to them now, they're black listed in a big way, and also theres still so much of River's past to catch up on, those odd men with the blue gloves for one, the ones that are really the reason for her being a mite unpredicable.
I watched One Tree Hill once, the.worst.thing.ever, God what a waste, lol.

Date: 2005-10-11 01:43 am (UTC)I do think the Blue Sun men were the first ones who tried to recover her and when they failed government got involved and sent in an Operative.
I really need to know more
and to have Mal/Inara have hot sex finally
