OK, I am a dork and I've rewatched certain bits.
This led to more coherent thoughts, behind the cut.
OK, to start with, Duncan is freaking me out. No, not because the boy is interfering with my shipper Logan/Veronica dreams. I think Veronica is best off single right now, anyway, as she needs time to figure out what she wants and Logan is way too messed up. Plus, if I got annoyed at every third wheel in my shipper preferences, I'd be stuck with perpetual ulcers.
No, Duncan is creeping me out because he seems so completely unaffected by it all, completely happy-shiny. A few days ago, a school bus carrying people he knew crashed. His very recent ex-girlfriend is an a coma. His current girlfriend and supposed love of his life was one step from being severely dead. Yet, he seems less affected by it all than I am when I have a bad hair day. He is all Mr. Pep and Sunshine, and he does not look as if he is putting on an act for others' sake, he looks as if he genuinly can put it all from his mind. Even when he tells V that it upsets him too, it does not look as if it's the truth in the slightest. Seriously, is he the Stepford Boyfriend? When Veronica Mars has to tell you about repression, there are problems here. He is just too even-keeled and that is not normal under the circumstances. Logan's acting out might not be healthy, but at least it's understandable and unsurprising. No one should be able to repress to such a degree. Even after they have a fight, he just walks away, and he isn't phased one bit. I can see Duncan waking up one morning, opening his blinds and discovering the rest of the world had dissappeared and going on with his breakfast, feeling a bit put out his morning paper won't be there. Seriously, is he a robot? Veronica, there's normal, and there's severely creepy. I'll let you figure out which category you think the guy belongs in.
And look at the aftermath of their sex scene. Where is the giddy "I just had sex with my One True Love" feeling? Honestly, I've been there, and this is in another Universe. His level of excitement is appropriate to "wow, there is something good to watch on A&E." Of course, Veronica is lacking coital afterglow too, and hey, she is still clearly conflicted about Logan (see hallway scene), and that whole scene just sells me on the fact that the relationship really shouldn't continue long term.
And speaking of Logan? That scene in the hallway is priceless. Logan's momentary surprise replaced by hurt and of course when Logan is hurt, he goes straight for the jugular. It's interesting that Veronica does not say anything back (someone else pointed out that she has actually not said a word to him yet in present time as opposed to flashback). But even without words, there was all that chemistry there and Veronica seemed more herself than she had all second season, so far, when she tried to figure out who was in the room with him. I must admit I think jealousy took over her brain, because what would she say to Logan's moaner when she got her on the phone? "Hi. Can you tell me your name? My Ex was in the room with you so I am curious?" So not over. I love how she was distracted when Duncan interrupted her. And of course, sneaking out of the room without waking him? Heh. I can see having to get home, but at least wake the guy. It sounds like the evening was a bit of a dud :D
I must admit I think Big Dick (hee) Casablancas is hot, even if he does have a thing for weapons. Of course, Logan and Kendall are just screwed-up, and trust Logan to go for the woman who has a husband with a firearms fetish. The boy is lucky if he lives to 21. I think it's clear Big Dick reminds Logan of Aaron, so I wonder if sleeping with Kendall is in some oblique way Logan getting back at his Dad. Someone at TWoP posited that there is also a twisted double-Oedipal thing going on there: Kendall reminds Logan of his trophy-wife, skimpily-clad-in-front-of-friends Mom, who he misses very much, and also, Logan is dealing with the huge trauma of having his abusive father sleep with and kill his girlfriend, by acting it out, with himself in the part of the victim. That boy needs all the therapy that money can get.
Also, Logan with a gun? Hot (and disturbing that he's a good shooter). Dick with a gun? Stupid. Because holding a gun that way is going to get recoil to break your wrist.
Two favorite lines this ep, both Logan's.
Logan (to Big Dick): My father had a similar philosophy. Of course, he's a murderer.
Logan (to Veronica): FYI-If cuddling was the best part, he didn't do it right.

Date: 2005-10-06 05:26 pm (UTC)I also find Logan and Lamb hot — I'm beginning to worry that my attraction metre has been permanently fused at "asshole".
ROFL.
The thing is, while in RL nice guys are obviously the better bet (though except for Keith and Wallace I don't think any guy on the show qualifies for that moniker), it doesn't often make for interesting characters. Conflict and drama do.
I find Lamb as a character a joy to watch because his nastiness amuses me and makes him a good foil for Veronica. I don't think he is hot though.
Big Dick is hot and we know little about him. Danger is sexy. At least when it's safe behind the TV screen :)
Logan I adore, because in him the jerkiness comes from hurt and damage he's had and we know he can be an absolute sap when in a relationship (just see him with Veronica, all his guard is down and what emerges is an incredibly sweet boy).

Date: 2005-10-06 08:17 pm (UTC)The thing is, this is exactly how he behaved last year when he was on the antidepressants, which is why I wondered if he's still on them. Because it really does seem as if he can't be bothered. As I said in my post, though, we've never really seen him affected by what's happening to people who aren't in his very close circle of people. Some people are just like that--they don't have a lot of empathy unless they already have a connection to someone. In any case, I agree that it's extremely odd behavior, and even if it's just his own personality, it's a really poor match for Veronica with her inability not to care.

Exactly. She tries to pretend she doesn't care, but in her case it's clearly a protective veneer. For Duncan, it seems genuine. I don't think she needs a bleeding-heart for a SO, but at least someone who could understand where she was coming from. And Duncan is genuinly detached and puzzled as to why it would bug her.
