More VM thoughts: First half of 1st season
Oct. 2nd, 2005 10:06 amI want to post more about Serenity (next post will be dealing with the sexiest Captain ever aka Mal) but for now: Veronica Mars.
I've been marathoning like crazy. 8 episodes in a day is...a lot. Even for me.
I am going to do much better organized thoughts later but for now:
Veronica: I love her. She is funny, she is snarky, she is strong. She sublimated her loss and hurt into her new tough persona. I think it's part of pretending that all that bad stuff happened to some other girl, not her. Also, I love that she isn't pining over Duncan. She is moving on. She tried to date Troy who was actually fun and charming and I loved him, except for being the whole lying drug dealer part. Oh well. Deputy Leo is nice, though there is something weird about his face I can't put my finger on. And she takes crap from nobody. Love her friendship with Wallace. They work so well together. I also love her interaction with Daddy Mars who is probably the best parent we see on the show (not a hard competition, though). It's loving and fun and close and just...guuuuuh. Everyone needs a Daddy like Daddy Mars.
For someone who is fast on the way of adding Logan/Veronica to her list of all-time favorite OTPs, I must confess I really like Duncan. Duncan with Veronica bores me rather, but Duncan himself is a sweet, really decent guy. I loved his coming up with the fairest decision possible when he got elected President. And when he is off his meds, he is even better. I love the niceness vibe between him and Veronica. And in the flashbacks, they are cute together.
Weevil. Heee. I love that Veronica has a motorcycle gang to call her own. Must come in quite useful. Also, Weevil/Logan bonding in that episode where they get detention? Priceless. Meeting of the minds, indeed! And I love that Logan goes to save Weevil from being expelled which is a very very nice thing to do, but he does it in his usual "I want credit for the prank and will be obnoxious" way. If I was into slash and not a LoVe shipper, I would so be all over Logan/Weevil. Also, was Lilly the school slut or something? Dating Logan and sleeping with the gang leader at the same time? Because I seriously doubt Weevil's little sister is named Lilly and he tattooed her name on his arm.
Lilly, Lilly, Lilly. I know I might be in the minority of one, but from what I see of her in the flashbacks, I don't care for her. Though the flashback to the homecoming dance, especially with the truth or dare is the cutest thing ever. Veronica virginally sweet, Duncan with a personality (and a cute one at that!), Logan not being either suicidal or nasty. It's fun. But I guess I don't care for girls like Lilly in RL. Sh is a wild child and it just doesn't appeal to me. She is completely selfish: Veronica is clearly reeling in one flashback from the fact that Duncan ditched her and Lilly? She is just not interested and suggests V get someone else. Also, she is cheating on her boyfriend (and considering I am spoiled re: murder, it is just sick). Doesn't deserve to be murdered, but still. Me no like. Does Logan have the worst taste in girlfriends, or what? Lilly cheats on him with his father, Caitlin cheats on him with Gang Guy (who steals his family's stuff) and Veronica turns him in to the cops for murder. The boy just can't get a break.
I actually really like Jake Kane. He is a really good, loving father. OTOH, Celeste is a bitch. Ugh. Don't even get me started on Lynn Echolls who wins the "worst mother of Neptune" award, hands down.
I would say I am on my way to being madly in love with Logan, but that would be a lie. Because I am definitely already there, hook line and sinker. I mean: snarky? Check. I will overlook anything in a character who is smart and good with words. All the ethnic stuff re: Hispanics doesn't bother me. Wouldn't want it in RL boyfriend probably, but I come from a culture where ethnic slurs and racism are quite prevalent, actually, and if you weeded out all the Russian classical authors who were antisemites (frex) you'd have almost nobody to read. More importantly, Logan is not a racist. He will just say whatever it takes to yank your chain.
Angsty? Check. Actually, ever since that abuse scene, the writers got me freaking out every time the guy does anything out of bounds because I don't want him to get beaten. Abuse makes me sick. A little digression: I was reading a debate on a board about whether it was abuse or was Daddy Aaron just very strict with discipline? Helllllllo? That just makes me mad because I have a button about abuse. As in "no fucking way is it justified." There's discipline, and there's abuse. I don't have a huge objection to corporal punishment, but here? You do corporal punishment to a five year old. You don't do it to a 17 year old. That's going to fuck him up. Also? What was going on was not a spanking but a pretty severe beating, I'd say. Unless you are a medical mutant, you don't remove your shirt to get a spanking (with a belt or otherwise). Hitting someone on their bare back with a belt is more like "Welcome to the British Navy" whipping, than anything else I can think of. That's definitely abuse. When you add to it the facts that Logan goes to pick a belt without any surprise or what not (though the expression on his face just kills me,) and that Logan is scared almost beyond rational thought in that ep around Aaron (and Logan is hardly a coward), it's clearly a part of a pattern, and that boy is reacting like an abuse victim to it, not someone who is in for a bit of spanking by stern but loving Daddy. OK, sorry, I know: digression. I just have really strong views on the subject.
I love that little bit of truce he and Veronica had when he was preparing Lilly's memorial video. You could tell that underneath of layers of...whatever, he was really missing her. I think becoming a jackass was his way of coping, just as becoming Supersleuth was V's. Also, I bet he clung to Lilly (and now to Veronica) because that boy doesn't have anything else. If I had a family like his, I'd hang myself or go Menendez. It's amazing he has any strength of character and decency. Because I don't think Aaron would care of Logan murdered a person a week in his bedroom as long as it was quiet and his "mother made out of plastic" would be too busy drinking and disrobing in front of his friends to care other than to tell him to keep bloodstains out of the carpet.
Also, Logan and Veronica just sizzle together, and I am only half done with the season. I love how they snark at each other. And the scene where V plays poker with the boys. Also, V has an amusing habit of blaming Logan for everything but she seems to slowly be growing out of it (yeah, I know she suffers a relapse :P). Love love love love.
I close with a thought on Aaron Echolls. If he wasn't an abusive, murdering, cheating sociopath, I'd kinda like him. Because that scene with Daddy Mars where Daddy Mars asks him to circle the names of the women he slept with at the Xmas party and Aaron circles 3 so Daddy Mars tells him "no, I meant on that night" and Aaron looks at him defensively and goes "Well, I was drinking hard cider." ROFL.

Sorry for the long comment
Date: 2005-10-02 02:19 pm (UTC)I do agree with you on most points, except that later on they get much less clear-cut. One of the reasons I had no idea who killed Lilly was that Aaron Echolls was all about reforming. I knew he was still bad, but honestly, it was hard to tell.
I love Celeste expressly because she is a bitch.
I don't know, Lianne Mars could give Lynn Echolls a run for her money for worst mother. You'll see why in the last episode.
Oh, and I did like Lilly. She was a good friend for Veronica, I think, and her being a slut wasn't really her being a slut, it was just her, being herself. I'm not making any sense. But then I found out how she was murdered, and yeah, not so much with the liking anymore. Except she did seem to save Veronica's life in the premier.
Oh, slightly OT, but I was talking to one of my cousin's friends, who is out of college, and we were talking about Serenity. He mentioned Veronica Mars, how much he loves it, and that he's probably on of the only guys who do. We then went to work on converting other people at the table.
Re: Sorry for the long comment
Date: 2005-10-02 02:35 pm (UTC)Heeee. I find cheating really unacceptable and it's a personal thing but "wild child" women just bore me. But I fully appreciate V's love for her. In some ways V is a lot more Lilly-like now.
the optimism of those who have only watched the first half of the season.
*Sticks tongue out* I can't wait for more angsty angst!

I know I'll be burning in a special circle of hell, but if it wasn't for the abusiveness (and the murder), I'd actually like Aaron, scuzzy though he is, because he entertains me so. Of course, the whole "sleep with an murder the girlfriend of your son who you abuse" thing puts a spoke in it a bit.
We then went to work on converting other people at the table.
Did it work? I am seeing it again a third time today.
Re: Sorry for the long comment
Date: 2005-10-02 02:39 pm (UTC)Again, off topic, but my cousin's friends are physics majors, so the discussion was about fire in space, different types of explossions, and how the sound in space worked.

Date: 2005-10-02 02:43 pm (UTC)Ahhh...Serenity!

What I like about VM is that I pretty much like all the characters. OK by like I mean 'interesting' - for interest Aaron Echolls is awful but incredibly fascinating.
Lilly I found annoying but I think that she was genuinely fond of Veronica and it was a case of the two of them complementing one another.
Interesting about you liking Logan so early. Most fans did like him earlier. I loathed him until .... maybe the Christmas episode. The reindeer boxer shorts and the hilarity of that episode started to win me over. Until then he was just the guy with all the cool lines. I didn't start seeing him as a human being until so late in the season it wasn't funny. Now I adore him of course. In hindsight, even from the pilot and his 'my daddy took my tbird away' line - he was so into Veronica ;)

Date: 2005-10-02 02:40 pm (UTC)Yes. I mean, when I was little I was spanked and I didn't like it, but I would hardly turn into a paralyzed mess when I thought I was in for it. That reaction is so out of proportion to anything but abuse. That whole ep, the guy is just trying to shrink into himself as much as possible and move as little as he can. He looks almost paralized with fear.
I also think even a spanking is inappropriate when the kid's a teenager, but this wasn't a spanking by a long shot.
Then the flash to the belts made me panic that he was going to kill himself.
That's what my husband thought too.

Yes. It's so weird, because when I was (much) younger, I used to drool over HH in Clash of the Titans.

I actually loved him in the Premiere. He was nasty but so funny, and I will forgive anything to a character who is funny and snarky and good with words. The "worthwhile human being" thing came in by the ep (was it 1.5?) when he was making the Lilly video and clearly mourning for her, plus he seemed utterly normal and nice in he flashbacks.
I LOVE the Xmas ep!

Date: 2005-10-02 02:46 pm (UTC)Man that was a funny generally. The boots; "God I love those boots" :D
Have you read my episodes in a nutshell guide? :) As I began to love the show more and more the nutshells got longer and longer. It was supposed to be one sentence per ep ;)

Date: 2005-10-02 02:49 pm (UTC)think the slashers went out of control after the Logan and Weevil detention episode
I can see why!
Oh, it's just perfect: Logan pushes both my "awwww, baby needs comfort" and "snark" buttons. It's like everything you like in fanfic only better written and in canon. (did that make any sense?)

I totally ship Logan with everybody. He's better that way.
He's eminitently shippable. Well, maybe not with Wallace (my mind just went a scary place!)
