Just started on Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle. Such a delightful book, so funny.
Am continuing my watch of Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. I just love the Aamir-Juhi chemistry. It has such a fun vibe to it, very youthful. I love it when he goes to wake her up in the morning and then he pauses and just stands there looking at her, and you can tell he has fallen for her and he gets the little kid to wake her up instead because touching her would be too loaded. Or when she looks at him when he is putting a salve on her arm. It's clear that these two characters have so much every day fun. I continue to find the kids remarkably bratty (were they brought up by wolves?) but oh well, they are sadly not the worst bolly kids ever. I liked the song in the rain, I like how the affection between Juhi and Aamir is unspoken but ever-present, and I love the fact that this movie has a certain degree of realism: songs haven't gone to Switzerland so far (to be fair, this is pre-DDLJ), Juhi doesn't try to set herself on fire when learning Aamir is going to marry someone else (Ishq, I am looking at you and the Kajol craziness), Aamir's troubles are small-scale: an inefficient factory and an order he can't fulfull, his decision to marry Maya (who is awful, but in an everyday sort of way: charmless and selfish and oblivious) is something he doesn't want but is driven to by his need to take care of the kids (and is not fraught with melodrama), and even the bad guy doesn't want to slit people's throats, but to take Aamir's factory over not by sending in goons but because Aamir can't fulfill the order. I like.
Plus, kissing!!!!
Also, got my 2-in-1 copy of "Bluffmaster" and "Taxi Number 9211"
I ended up watching the last 25+ minutes (including the ending) of Taxi Number 9211, because I had a paranoid fear that John Abraham was going to murder someone again. From what I saw, it seems like an excellent movie, unusual for Bollywood (and
aliterati, JA actually has more than two expressions here, heee). He also keeps a really sexy picture of himself in the bedroom for some weird reason :P
The plot of Taxi Number 9211 involves two men: an irascible taxi driver played by Nana Patekar and a high tempered priveleged young man played by John Abraham. They interact and their lives spiral out of control. The theme of people whose lives get badly screwed up but who emerge from this as better people through this being a learning experience is a pretty common one in Hollywood, but not so much in Bollywood, and it was great to see it done, and done well. I'd have never thought Nana and John could work well together, but it really was a good combination. And I found the ending very...gracious and kind, for lack of a better word. I must admit, that when his fiancee dumped him because he wasn't going to be very rich any more, I really had to roll my eyes at her. Granted, you won't have 36 cars now, woman, or whatever, but poor or not, how can you give up a guy who looks like John Abraham? Especially when he is pleading and crying? Hmmm.
It's funny, because I was pretty reconciled to the idea that JA was going to end up alone, but then at the very end, as he drives out of the gateway and collides with another car (again) and he can't see who is in the car except the driver is a woman, and then Priyanka Chopra steps out of the other car and 'pyar pyar pyar' begins playing, I felt all giddily glad. Not just because it appears that reward for virtue is Priyanka, but also because I got flashbacks to Karam with John and Priyanka which I absolutely adore, even though I must have been one of ten people who saw it. And I love how he was yelling at the other driver but when he sees Priyanka, who is bossy and adorable and tells him to lower his finger (that he is pointing at her), the wind is completely gone out of his sails. Well, not many heterosexual men wouldn't pause when confronted with Priyanka. And I love that she pauses too when she gets a good look at him, because...John Abraham! And then he gets back into his car and then out of it again and he apologizes and tells her that he would pay for whatever damages and he asks for her phone number and she gives it to him very carefully and slowly and they are grinning at each other and awwwwwww...I know which movie I am watching tonight.
