Hmmmm, man's love for the machine with a soul seems to be a theme in this LJ lately. But first off, a bunch of people on my flist have discovered Veronica Mars and I love reading their posts. Yay. So I ended up rewatching A Trip to the Dentist, and it feels very different after "Not Pictured." It's still my favorite VM ep, but even though I am OK with Cassidy being the rapist, I liked the real mess of ATttD earlier better: more natural, less clear-cut.

OK, to get back to H/B. Behind the cut is a rather extensive Helo/Boomer picspam. I admit that they are a large part of the reason I am so into Battlestar Galactica. I like my ships impossibly hard and angsty and it's tough to get harder and more angsty than Helo and Boomer. Not only are they from enemy races, but he is someone who was in love with her when he thought she was human, and she is another copy of the Cylon model he was in love with, who is supposed to lead him around for various Cylony reasons, but ends up falling in love with him, going off the reservation, leaving her people, and putting up with the remnants of humanity hating her and putting her in jail to be with him. He, in turn, loves her anyway, even after finding out she isn't human, even after being ostracised by the crew, even despite that he is a military pilot and she is a member of the race that did a very effective job of wiping out humanity so that less than 50,000 straggling survivors remain. Talk about a FUBAR ship. Made just for me, in fact. I know many people don't care for them, but I lap it all up with a giant spoon.

So, without much further ado:

Helo and G-Boomer from the mini:

Here are Helo and C-Boomer. These are in rough chronological order.

I adore this pic:

Awwww:

I love this one:

Heartbreaking last (??) image:

And a few cool Helo pics. Because he is hot.

Aaw, now you've made me nostalgic and I'm thinking of all the great Helo/Sharon moments and I want my show back! I especially love that Helo shot of him walking with the gun, 'cause it reminds me of the episode, I think it was Litmus, when Sharon has been 'captured' and he has to decide whether to go save her and face almost certain death. I think that was the episode that I just completely fell for this ship.

I know, that was the moment that grabbed me too. And I love that he starts walking away and only then changes his mind. Because he is flesh and blood and that moment of wanting to run away makes him so human.

Yes. Exactly. If he hadn't wanted to chicken out and leave her behind, it wouldn't have meant so much. He would've just been this randomly heroic guy as opposed to a struggling, imperfect human who's terrified but ends up doing the right thing in the end. Kind of like how in Res Ship Part 1 where he talks about he has doubts about Sharon, his relationship with her, and the baby, and it's like "Hey, he's not just crazy in love and blind to the dangers. He believes in her, but he's not stupid with it. He's scared, and he's choosing to follow this thing anyway." Which is again, as you say more human, and also makes it more meaningful. If it never occurs to someone to walk away, then the act of not walking away isn't that big a deal. When someone's human enough to see how much easier or safer it would be to make a different choice, and wants to make that easier/safer choice (because hello, not suicidal), that makes them easier to relate to. In a situation like the one Helo faced in Litmus, I have no idea what I'd do (fortunately, because I think being on a post-apocalyptic planet would be quite unpleasant. I don't even like camping). But I'm pretty damn sure that I'd WANT to make the less dangerous choice, whatever I ended up doing in the end.

Yes, if someone feels no fear, bravery means nothing.

Actually, all throughout the first season, Helo was the one I felt the worst for. The fact that he survived the hell of being all alone on a destroyed planet, no chances to get off, running like a mouse in a maze, target of Cylon experiments he didn't even know about, it was all just horrible.

Kind of like how in Res Ship Part 1 where he talks about he has doubts about Sharon, his relationship with her, and the baby, and it's like "Hey, he's not just crazy in love and blind to the dangers. He believes in her, but he's not stupid with it. He's scared, and he's choosing to follow this thing anyway."

I think this was my favorite Helo moment. You realize he isn't blind to the messed-uppedness situation, that he knows the cost and is willing to pay it, but of course he wishes it wasn't as complicated as it is. He is not an idiot, just a dedicated, decent guy in love.

Ah, luvverly. Nice, nice pictures. The last one made me sad,t hough. Sniffle. I wish there were a picture of them with Hera (you know, in the FIVE FREAKING MINUTES they had her before she was taken away without the characters in charge ever explaining why. Because from a plot POV, the whole dead baby swap thing creates conflict, but the lazy writers didn't bother to come up with a logical reason for Roslin to initiate said swap. But then, these are the same writers who think putting deleted scenes in the previouslies is a good substitute for actual continuity, so maybe I'm asking too much of them). But that would probably make me sadder.

I'm really hoping the writing in S3 improves dramatically, in part because I still love these two characters, and I'd really like to see them not get wrecked in the way that, say, Apollo was (because between the whole paying an impoverished woman for sex thing and the flirting with Dee when he knew she was still with Billy thing, I'm not overly thrilled. What a waste of a good depression!). I don't think it's asking too much, given that the writing in S1 and S2.0 was good. And bits and pieces of S2.5 were excellent. It was just that as an organic whole it was kind of excruciating.

And wow, I keep forgetting that GP is tall because in all the pictures where it's just her and TP, she looks kind of petite. And then you see both actors in frames with other actors and you realize that GP is actually pretty tall, and the only reason she looks short compared to TP is because he's freaking ridiculously tall!

I couldn't find one, but yes, it would have been great.

I understood why Roslin wanted the kid taken away. It's an unknown entity to begin with, and they don't want a Cylon bringing her up, or other Cylons targeting her for whatever. And I understand why she didn't tell Helo or Sharon. It doesn't stop me thinking it's an awful thing to do though.

in part because I still love these two characters, and I'd really like to see them not get wrecked in the way that, say, Apollo was

Agreed. I didn't really mind what they did with Apollo, at least some of what they did with him, but a few of their ideas didn't work out too well.

And yeah, TP is like 10 feet tall :P

Helo and Boomer are so pretty, but I also have this secret desire to see him and Starbuck get it on, just once. BSG is one of those shows that is very shippable. I don't really have an OTP, but there are lots of pairings that interest me.

I need to surf your flist and see who's watching VM. I love reading posts by people who are just getting into it. It reminds me of how much I loved it. I still do, of course, but season 1 was special. And I agree with you about ATtTD. I liked it better before the retcon.

Well, seeing that Helo was unattached before Caprica and Starbuck changes partners like people change socks, I wouldn't be surprised if they did get it on before, at least once. But I don't want them to get it on now, not just because of the H/B OTP but because they have such a nice, uncomplicated friendship now and that would really mess it up.

I still do, of course, but season 1 was special.

Definitely. In ATttD I loved that it was a really unlucky concatenation of circumstances, not a villain. A lot more complex. Oh well. And ATttD is the reason I can never like Dick.

I actually like the retcon better than the original because it always seemed a bit unlikely to me that if a girl is laying passed out at a party full of people who really do not like her and people really desperate to get laid, the worst thing to happen to her is semi-consensual with her ex.

Date: 2006-05-24 08:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
That's why I don't have a problem with the retcon and think it's very probable. I just liked the greyness of before.

You're right-they do have a great friendship. I'm just thinking about the pretty.

And ATttD is the reason I can never like Dick.

Absolutely. I'm torn about Dick, because I did enjoy him as comic relief this season, and RH does a great job, but I can never forget the way he treated Veronica in that episode. And I have always wanted to see some followup on that.

Helo/Boomer, yay! Nothing really constructive to add, I just really appreciated the picspam. Thanks!

They've totally become my favorite couple, especially since Apollo/Starbuck has gotten so annoying and frustrating to root for. (See: Apollo's flashback girlfriend, Lee/Dee/B. triangle, the entire existence of Anders, etc.)

Ooh, ooh! Death is not an option:
One couple must seperate forever... L/V or H/B?

I agree that L/K have sort of lost me. I used to be a shipper for them (though never a very rabid one) but all the very artificial obstacles sort of dampened it. We'll see if s3 could bring it back.

Ooh, ooh! Death is not an option:
One couple must seperate forever... L/V or H/B?

Give me a heart-attack, will ya? OK, if I have to pick, it would be H/B for the separation. Because they are both grown-ups and because they've had their happy together love-wuth-no-holding-backs stuff. L/V are just messed up kids and in some ways need it more desperately. Also, their love story hadn't had time to fully bloom like H/B yet...
