Thoughts on VM season 2
Mar. 23rd, 2006 11:14 amOh Veronica Mars. My love for the show is finally back. It almost got killed during the middle of the season (eps 10 and 11 put together could finish off anybody), but after last night, it’s back and it’s stronger than ever.
The fact that they are now paring down plots and subplots means they’ve finally picked up the pace. They really had too many different disparate strands going on earlier in the season which not only killed the pace, it dissipated the interest. In this regard, the departure of Duncan was a blessing and not because I am a L/V shipper (to be honest, I am rather off that bandwagon. If it happens, great, if not, great too). With Duncan gone, it cut out all the time spent on Duncan sub-plots which were always the weakest and most ridiculous part of the show (Meg’s coma baby? Come ON) and got rid of the time and plot and pace stopping dead for obligatory Duncan-Veronica scenes. For that very reason, I am also glad they got rid of Alicia and the whole Wallace’s father subplot, which was yet another unconnected thing that took time away and was a half-baked idea that went nowhere, anyhow.
But now, the strands are finally tying together and the pace is good. Of course, it also looks like Woody WILL be the bad guy, seeing that they haven’t yet gotten to the whole ‘it’s his hangar’ thing which means they are drawing it out. And my idea that incorporation is something he wants to do to allow crime free reign outside also got some support from Mr. Pope’s speech last night. I really hope that’s not the case though because if I could figure the mystery out 7 episodes away from the ending, that’s just sloppy on RT’s part.
I was also interested in seeing Veronica’s expression at the end of the ep, when Logan came up to her and told her he thought he did something horrible, looking genuinely distressed. She really looked very concerned for him. I loved it. Because no matter her snide digs at him (and vice versa) that reaffirms that she cares for him. It doesn’t have to be romantic, but considering their tangled history and the fact that they’ve been very close and they’ve been friends for quite a time, it’s a good thing and makes sense that no matter their current rift, when Logan’s in trouble, in real trouble, she’d support him (see his mother’s suicide last year. And then they were on much worse terms than now). Of course, this also reminded me that she hasn’t been doing much investigating of his case recently. Veronica of the short attention span? Or did she just get spooked after the Fitzpatricks?
And it also showed me not only how close Logan still feels to Veronica, but how isolated and alone he is if the only person he can confide is his ex-girlfriend with whom he is kinda bristly. He has no friends or a support network or family. Of course, if what he confesses is his Hannah deal, I am not sure how Veronica will react. If he had sex with Hannah, I can see Veronica being unhappy with Logan, and not because of jealousy. Personally, if he slept with her, it would be really hard to redeem Logan in my eyes. He needed to get close to her to get to her father and get him to drop the false testimony, true. But he didn’t need to sleep with her to do it. Not with an innocent, a virgin, who thought he really loved her.

Date: 2006-03-23 04:55 pm (UTC)I'm glad I'm not the only one who was really waning on this season... the writing was so god-awful in the last episode I was almost in tears of disgust.
But this one was definitely back to form!
*now can't wait 'til next week, while she was kinda dreading this week*

Date: 2006-03-23 05:14 pm (UTC)Yeah, about midway, the show just fell asleep. It seems to pick up the pace now which is great. I actually can't even remember the MOTW from last ep without racking my brains...

Date: 2006-03-23 05:31 pm (UTC)I was confirming whether they have said it or not, because I tend not to believe anything on the show until they have spelled it out - because the show has twists and things aren't what they seem. But of course, I am so far back on my thinking, I couldn't possibly have worked this one out.

Date: 2006-03-23 05:27 pm (UTC)On the Logan-sleeping-with-Hannah issue I'm mixed - obviously it is a deeply, deeply horrible thing to do - I'm almost certain Hannah was a virgin and she does seem like the type of girl to whom the first time is really important. However - the way she approached him makes me feel like if he'd rejected her she would have been crushed. Now obviously that's no excuse - she's gonna be pretty damn crushed however this goes but I see Logan as a very short-sighted person, also a totally unrealistic one - he didn't want to hurt her in the short term and maybe a part of him did actually think it would work out. Also at the heart of it is the fact that he is using her to stay out of jail (no duh!) and he can get very caught up in stuff.
That sounds like I'm trying to make excuses - I'm really not. For me the main crime is that he didn't have to take it so far with her and he did (maybe.) I mean it's not a crucial part of the plan that he sleep with her is it? I guess what I'm saying is - Logan done bad, sure but I see it as a bad thing not totally unforgivable. It's not so black and white for me.
Will V forgive him? I'm thinking she'll be very pissed off at him (which will make a nice change) but she tends to forgive him in the end, personally I think her forgiving him for having people do tequila shots off her stomach is proof positive that she will eventually forgive him for most things, and I think the fact that he came to her for help will work in his favour.
What? You didn't want an essay?! ;)

Yeah, but it concerned her as opposed to someone else, and truthfully, this was so far from the worst thing that happened to her that night that it was low on the totem pole of her issues. And Logan was the only one of the people involved who apologized. This, yes I can see Veronica forgiving him (she's done plenty of questionable things herself), but I am having a hard time myself. I guess I'll have to keep repeating 'he is a stupid teenage boy' to myself over and over and hope it sticks.
