I am in the middle of episode 3 of Tree of Heaven. And I just have to share my incredible squee. So far, this gorgeous story of young forbidden passion is AWESOME. It's only 10 eps and filmed in Japan but it's a kdrama. So it combines the best of both worlds: it has the driving pace of a jdrama and doesn't dawdle on random side-characters. But it has kdrama's beautiful cinematography, passion and leading men who do not seem to be in dire need of a sandwich (sorry, I love you JE boys, but you need a meal so badly).

OMG OMG OMG OMG!

[livejournal.com profile] allbloomedout, you were right! Ep 2 gets even better!

You know what this drama gets dead on? How intense we feel when young. Not that I am an old lady, but in my late 20s, I have to admit that you get self-possessed enough, used to things enough, that the unadulterated, unconstrained emotion is a bit more unusual.

And ep 2 and beginning of 3 brings awesome, gorgeous romantic angst and jealousy to the yard. YES.

I feel incredibly bad for Yoon-Suh and am rooting for him like mad. In RL, I'd be all 'Hana, go with Senpai. He is hot, unmessed up, and not your stepbrother.' But that is what fiction is for. It's for me acting out my irresponsible side, my id, so to speak.

But OMG. When Senpai and Hana are walking out of the school, and YS is walking a little behind. And Hana and Senpai are scheduling a date etc etc, and the camera cuts to YS's face, as Hana is obliviously chirping. Lee Wan is honestly amazing. This is the first thing I've seen him in, but I want to watch him in more now. He looks utterly distraught and near tears, while still looking composed.

And then Hana makes a present for Senpai for the date, but she feels like she needs to hide it from YS. Hmmmm...

And then. OMG OMG OMG OMG.

What follows is one of the most awesome kdrama scenes ever. Only to be beat by other scenes in that ep.

Because Hana meets Senpai and gets into a car with him. And he looks back, prior to backing out (he is taking her to Tokyo, swanky) and goes 'did you come with your brother?' As Hana looks back, to see Yun-Suh standing some distance off. And he is wearing only a t-shirt (and pants :D) in the snow. And I swear, if a guy this hot looked at me with al his heart in his eyes, looking this broken, so no filters? I'd get out of the car, date or no date.

But of course Hana, who is getting a bit freaked out by her new 'brother's' suddenly new weirdness, doesn't say anything, and Senpai starts driving off.

And OMG OMG OMG

OMG OMG

OMG

YH starts running. He is running after the car. In the snow. Wearing a t-shirt (Lee Wan must have an iron constitution if he didn't come down with pneumonia after the shoot. First they make him wander barefoot in the snow, now this). And he doesn't care that it totally exposes his feelings, that he is not holding back or trying to play it cool or anything. He is utterly vulnerable and open and he cares for nothing except being with her (probably because she is literally the only person in his world, OMG). And he keeps running, and he falls a couple of times but it doesn't stop him, and it's...

I was tearing up.

Seriously.

Kdrama awesomeness never leave me.

And in the end, Senpai and Hana have their date, but as they walk to his car, for them to go to Tokyo Tower, they find...Yoon-Suh. Sitting by the car on the ground. OMG. He just ran all the way there, and then just sat there, waiting. And symbolically, when Hana sees him, she drops the present she was going to give to Senpai and it shatters. This is insane. And insanely awesome. Once again, in RL, this might be a bit odd but in drama? BRING IT ON BABY.

So Senpai basically gives Hana some $$$ and tells her she should take her brother home and they'd go out some other time. (Here, allow me to make a brief note that I really like Senpai. He is not just a hottie, but he seems a genuinely nice, decent, good guy).

And so the two unsiblings are left alone. And Hana finally loses it, yelling at YS, that he ruined the present she was going to give Senpai, and that she likes Senpai, not him. And YS reaches and she is struggling but all he does is to put the cross he always wears (that belonged to his dead mother!!!!!) around her neck.

And as she freezes, startled out of her rage, he speaks...

OMG! And his voice is a little hoarse, as if he is unused to talking. And he tells her he will be with her forever. In Korean (and she writes it down phonetically to look up later). OMG OMG. (Btw, I really love that even after he starts talking, he doesn't talk much. He is still a pretty non-verbal person).

Did I mention the little things this drama gets right? These characters feel this young. I am watching them and going 'I totally remember being like this!' (not in love with my hunky stepbrother part but, you know...) Like this awesome scene where they are pedalling to school, she is behind him on the bike, hands around his waist and he swerves and she grabs tighter and OMG, his face. You poor woobies.

Anyway, to get back to the main gist. She looks up what it means, but before she has a chance to decide what to do about it, if anything, another truly awesome scene follows.

Senpai is doing a judo demonstration (he is some sort of a judo prodigy) in the school, easily throwing all the opponents. And then there is a pause as there are no more volunteers. And you hear a voice and it's YH. And he says he wants to do it until one of them is unable to get up. And Senpai is politely confused, saying these are not the rules in judo, but YH insists and Senpai says OK (it's interesting, Senpai is a nice guy, but maybe because he is well adjusted, he is not a no-holds-barred passion guy. He won't destroy himself for love). And this amazing scene follows, where YH just keeps throwing himself at Senpai, only for Senpai to easily throw him. Only for YH to get up and do it again. It's a hell of a brutal punishment and after a few times, Senpai only has to sidestep and YH keeps crashing but he keeps going. And then Hana runs in!!!!

And she sees him lying there. And she is clutching the cross! And she is crying. And she repeats what he told her!!!!

And Senpai who is awesome helps YH to get up and declares it a draw. Only for YH to collapse unconscious. And then it's Hana who has to take YH home, on a bike, but he is barely conscious, so she has to place his hands around her, and I love how it's probably the moment for her, you can clearly see, when she feels something of that nature. And you see her all startled.

And then she puts him, shirtless, in a warm bath, but since he is unconscious, he keeps slipping in, so she finally clambers in with him, and puts his arm around her shoulders to support him and his head flops on her neck.

OMG OMG OMG OMG.

HOT.

(For one reason or another, this ep has a lot of shirtlessness and I am not complaining).

And you can see her become incredibly aware, that she is in a close embrace, soaking wet, with a half-naked guy, whose head is on her shoulder. And there is all that incredibly hot skin there and she is getting affected :D

And the thing continues as she takes care of him when he is out of it: she rubs lotion on him and tries to look away, but you can't do it when putting a salve on. PEH is really good at protraying someone coming for the first time to terms with physical attraction and freaked out by it (I think her feeling for Senpai was sweet 'storybook' love). Especially when she has to raise him and his mouth is touching her ear. EEEE.

Anyway blah blah more stuff.

And then we get to another incredible scene. Where she is looking out of her window, to see him standing there. And then OMG OMG. There is a window between them, and he reaches out and traces the outlines of her face through the window. In this incredibly tender, quiet gesture. And then (as she cannot break away: you get the sense for them both, the feeling is out of control), he kisses her forehead through the glass.

I have no words for the awesomeness of this scene.

And we also have wonderful scenes as when he takes her mitten off so they could hold hands skin to skin, or when they hide in a closet from her friend who is looking for him (he's become popular with the girls because they aren't blind, and I love how she is so poutingly jealous and she doesn't realize it. I think this, girl-like, sets the seal on his desireableness, that other girls want him). And in the closet, they are so hyper aware of closeness.

And then we get angstorama scene number 348. When (spurred by the fact that Senpai gave her a cell to call him), they have this scene in the middle of the street, where he tells her he loves her and she says she loves him like a brother. (And he is all 'how can you see me as a brother?') But then she admits she likes him like a guy too, and that makes her hate him. ANGST. YOUNG HEARTS BREAKING.

And then she comes into his room, angrily after that, and finds his sketchbook, and starts tearing out all his sketches of her, and he finds her and he tries to hug her and they are both crying and she is yelling that she will love Senpai, that is who she wants to love. And that she hates him, YS, because he is her brother so she shouldn't feel like that. She hates him.

And walks out, and he runs after her and OMG OMG (as Maya watches. I think she is just 'they are weird whatever' mode) and he is shattering and he is pleading and he is 'liar' and she can't mean it, and he is holding her shoulders, and is slumped against her, as if he can't stand up, and she leaves anyway, and he collapses on the floor, and he is destroyed and OMG.

I can't wait to watch more!
