Veronica, anime shippiness and Bollywood picspam

I've been counting hours till 9pm and the Veronica Mars ep. Can't wait to see Logan and Veronica interact and Aaron's trial is going to be terrific. Just to have Logan and Veronica's reactions to it? Gleeeeeee.

In other news, I have totally got behind Ban/Himeko in GetBackers. Evil writers, hitting every ship kink I have! When at the end of that three parter, they fight and he beats her soundly, and then when she is lying unconscious he picks her up and puts her down carefully, and her clothes are torn from the fighting so he takes off his shirt to cover her up and I die. And then he walks off, and he says "You can have my life, for however little it's worth but not yet" because he has to protect her blah blah. And he's killed her brother and she hates him but he did it to protect her and they lived together when they were kids for a bit and he takes her antidote bottle next day "as payment for the shirt" and OMG. Total OTP. Even if they never get together in the show.

Also, I am rather amused by the fact that in final volume of Hot Gimmick, I am so amused/surprised by three things:

1. Ryo collapsing in a fit because Hatsumi and Shinobu gotten together. Glee. Love angst.

2. When Hatsumi tells Ryo that they were broken up and she was sure he slept with what's her name so she slept with her (adopted) brother, the uber-jealous, bossy and immature Ryo's reaction? I don't care, I want you back. *shock* And then he tells her something to the effect of "you've come to find me, so you care for me and not him." Surprisingly mature. That boy, surface appearances aside, is SO emotionally whipped. (And of course Hatsumi didn't really blah blah)

3. Hatsumi is the one who comes into Ryo's bedroom near the end! Talk about shock. And when he is grouchy and is all "so, I bet you've come to tell me you can't marry me and your family is blah blah blah" and she responds "I thought I'd stay the night because we are going to be together anyway, so as your fiancee..." Heeeeee.

And completely unconnected, today's eye-candy/pic spam post is of Kareena Kapoor, one of my favorite Bollywood actresses. While most casual Bolly fans would most likely know her as the shallow, dim Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabie Gham (a hilarious, delicious, vampy role), she became my favorite by portraying such deiverse and strong characters as a jaded young hooker spending a rainy night with a depressed businessman in Chameli, as a traditional Muslim girl going against her fear-bound community in Dev, a harrowing movie about sectarian violence, as Naaz (a Bangladeshi woman who is smuggled into Pakistan with her family, and falls in love with their smuggler) in Refugee, as an upper-class idealist brightening up the very political Yuva, and above all, as Princess Kaurwaki in Asoka, who is both a warrior and a star-crossed lover, and a supremely confident woman.

The thing that's interesting with Ban and Himeko is that for as emotionally distant and detached as he is, Ban really puts himself out there emotionally for Himeko. She's a tough girl, but the show constantly puts Ban as her knight/protector and he's vulnerable when she's involved (much later on one of the bad guys keeps Ban from fighting him by informing him that Himeko was in trouble and Ban stops mid strike and gets this furious look and goes after her). If Shido is whipped by Madoka, Ban is also pretty predictable when it comes to Himeko. Now whether you interprut that as brotherly or not is up to you, but I think it's more than that, definitely on Himeko's part later on and I do think Ban sees her differently. Because of their past, it's obviously going to take some time for them to ever function normally around each other.

And out of the two boys, even though Ginji is probably the more powerful, Ban is the warrior. Ban is always thinking about the long term goal and he's SMART. That's something that shows up later on about how intelligent Ban actually is. He's willing to sacrifice himself to get ahead in the long run (and does several times).

It's interesting to me that Ban is the brains of the operation. True, he engaged in getbacking before he met up with Ginji, with Himeko and her older brother, but still, Ginji is the former gang leader, and you'd think he'd be the one who'd be more street smart, as opposed to being this chirpy idealist.

And I also get not just a brotherly vibe from Himeko/Ban (though the protector bit actually is another kink of mine). Husband's comment? "I don't think they'll get together for sure. But six bets out of seven" rather sums up my attitude too. Of course, they could have this tention and it never goes anywhere (there is certainly enough FUBARness there) but potential is there...

Also, what on earth is 'kindred.' Akabane mentioned it as something about Ban.

Ban is apparently a warlock of somekind (which is why he can use the jagen and the Snakebite). Because of that he's somehow cursed (he refers to himself as such several times). Now what that actually means about him I don't know, but Akabane seems to, which is why Akabane sees him as good for a blow out fight and is always trying to get him to fight seriously with him. The implication is that if Ban goes all out, he'll do something really nasty (we know he ripped someone's arm off at one point). He doesn't go full homicidal for Ginji and Himeko's sake. Akabane refers to Ban as a kindred spirit because Akabane isn't entirely human either and they both know that if Ban didn't have the friends he does, he'd be just like Akabane.

I can see that, but the difference is Ban cares. His snarking and his stand-offishness is because he doesn't want to get hurt. Which means he has feelings that can be hurt...

I think the difference is that Ban really is a good person while Akabane, though he can tolerable, is really in it for himself. There's a reason Ginji is terrified of Akabane but not of Ban. Ban is rational and thoughtful and while he does get off on fighting, he doesn't get off on hurting people (like Akabane does).

And there's plenty of speculation about what Ban was like in the time period after he killed Himeko's brother to when he met Ginji, as there are a LOT of people who want Ban dead that neither Ginji nor Himeko know about, which leads to the conclusion that during that lost time period, Ban wasn't exactly a pleasant person. And he did rip off Fudou's arm in a fight a long time ago, though knowing Fudou, I don't blame him one bit.
