Just got back from Iceland which was amazingly beautiful and perfect. We had two glorious days: saw geisers, waterfalls, swam in a geothermal pool, wandered around Reykjavik (and the sun was out for it, too) and flew over Greenland. Perfect.

In a crazy, yet typical turn-around, I now like Ryo (the subject of my previous rant, and the main male character of Hot Gimmick, all 10 volumes of it which I read on the plane to Iceland.

Like the boy now, mainly because I can see his headspace. He is not a perfect guy I'd love to bring home to parents, and if I dated him, I'd murder him, but he is such a typical teenager (most of my problems with his behavior seriously vanished when I remembered: teenage boy!) And he clearly is both desperate for and even often nice (gasp!) to Hatsumi however hard he tries to conceal it under the veneer of "I am soooo cool and I don't need silly girls." The bit where she asks him to a movie and he tells her "OK, I'll go. I have no plans for that day. Even though I'll be bored to death" while in reality, to go on this date, he is blowing off these uber-important practice exams for the University that he's been studying really hard for, is typical. And very teenage boy. Just as Hatsumi's "OMG! I am not wearing sexy underwear" is very typical teenage girl (my rather more grown-up reaction is to laugh at this because come on, he's a teenage boy, he's in love with her, and he is getting to have sex with her for the first time. I don't think he'd notice if she had pink elephants on her undies at that point). He also has quite a temper but he is also very very straightforward, no lies, and doesn't seem to be afraid of things (including his mother) which is quite good. And because I was bored on the plane, I started rereading, and a lot of his behavior that annoyed me earlier stopped doing so when I knew more about him and where he was coming from. In fact, I found his little satisfied look when Hatsumi manifests the smallest interest in him, kinda adorable. He has no filter between brain and mouth, but then his family isn't a great socially-developing environment.

Basically, his relationship with Hatsumi is a first relationship he's ever had, and I don't mean a romantic one, I mean ANY. No wonder he has plenty of rough edges and doesn't really know how to conduct himself or really express his liking. Heck, even when he hugs her, it seems like he is sort of unused to expressing affection (but significantly, whenever she gets really upset, he helps one way or another). Look at his family! His mother is a snobby bitch who couldn't care less about him as long as he is 'perfect' in getting perfect grades and all that stuff, but his father makes his mother look like Mommy of the year. Despite his surfac niceness, he is a horrible person. Not only does he have an affair with someone, and when that woman gets divorced by her husband he basically lets her die, but he also has Hatsumi's Dad take the fall for it. And that flashback, where little Ryo asks him "everybody in the complex has their Daddies be home all the time and play with them, but not me" (and being Ryo, he coaches it into "not that I care, it's clearly stupid" but he obviously does), Daddy Dearest's response (Dad is married to Mom but he sees the family about 10 days a year)? "I love this other woman, so I have no love left over for Mom or you." OK. What a thing to say to your kid. No wonder Ryo not only cannot comprehend Hatsumi's devotion to her family (in his case, family really is a collection of strangers randomly stuck together), but is so emotionally "I don't really like you THAT much" etc to Hatsumi. It's not just teen "I am trying to be cool." He just doesn't want to be rejected and is trying to minimize exposure. All he is familiar wit are relationships that don't work, after all. I mean, in his head somewhere is the thought that hey, even his parents didn't really want him one way or another. Even in that flashback to all of them as kids, he is an odd little kid but he is clearly very lonely and bossiness is the way to cover it. Heck, his blackmailing her in the beginning is really an extention of that. The guy wants some company. That is where his facade is tied to: proving he doesn't need or want anyone because he is above it all.

And I think the above is also tied up to his jealousy and/or 'don't talk to other guys' issues. Even though he is going about it all wrong (but he is getting better), it's basically because he is terrified of losing her (There is that bit where he makes her choose between him and her adopted brother who is in love with her (it's a soap after all) and she stands indecisive (because she just doesn't see her brother as anything but a brother and so the whole situation is a bit off-kilter for her and he just hugs her and goes "Just choose me. Nobody else ever." is pretty indicative). And that is why he doesn't mention the thing about their fathers to her right away. He is rather panicky about losing her (and of course, ironically, his not telling her does just that. Though maybe if he explained himself as opposed to being 'it's because it doesn't matter' it might not have ended as disastrously). So yeah, not my idea of a boyfriend by any means, and he certainly has a lot of growing up to do, but he certainly livens up the manga.

But now Hatsumi's ditched him at the end of vol 10 (which I am all for, as: angst! Power dynamic reversal!) and I found out that I am hooked but the rest isn't published yet. Boo!

Also, last week, I've been slowly (busy busy busy) watching GetBackers. I just finished episode four, in fact. And I love it. GB deals with Ban and Gingi, two young guys who live in a slightly futuristic Tokyo and run a recovery service: if it's been taken/stolen/lost they will find it for you. They have an almost 100% recovery rate but business just doesn't seem to be booming. This show is a bit of a comedy, a bit of noir and as the story is getting more arced and our heroes clearly have the requisite tragic past (tm), I am a happy happy camper. I like Gingi quite well: he is nice, effective and sweet. But I must admit I am definitely a Ban girl. It's the very reluctant hero vibe he has going. And sarcasm and mercenariness (yeah, yeah, not a word). And of course the fact that he is a nice guy underneath, however much he tries to hide it. Also, unlike Saiyuki, this one seems to have more prominent roles for women. Not only is there the waitress girl, but there is Himeko, "Lady Poison" who seems to be working a delivery service and is with the bad guys, and clearly has a whole connection with Ban (I don't mean romantically. Yet. Hopefully). As far as I can tell from info so far, Ban and Himeko and Himeko's older brother grew up together and did the recovery thing. And Himeko saw Ban kill the brother. And she is all bitter and alone now and hates Ban and makes it her mission to kill him. And Ban gets all emotionally messed-up around her too. I really wonder what the back-story is, as Ban doesn't strike me as someone who gets off on killing people. Whatever it was, that's probably why he is so cynical and hard-boiled now. This is really FUBAR so I could totally get behind the OTP.

Lovely pictures! I can't wait to go there myself.

Icelandic horses are great. Some neighbors of ours have a whole herd of them, and they ride past our house several times a day in the summer. The dogs think it's all very exciting.

I've always wanted to go to Iceland. *sigh*

Even in that flashback to all of them as kids, he is an odd little kid but he is clearly very lonely and bossiness is the way to cover it.

That's always the vibe I got from Sanzo too, only his was the aloof arrogance. A lot of their worse habits are cultivated because they're hurting more than anything else.

I like Gingi quite well: he is nice, effective and sweet.

Ginji really grows on you in the Limitless Fortress arc as he's more Kenshin than you'd expect on first glance.

It's the very reluctant hero vibe he has going. And sarcasm and mercenariness (yeah, yeah, not a word). And of course the fact that he is a nice guy underneath, however much he tries to hide it.

That's why I loved Ban right away. He's a good guy, just rather pragmatic (he doesn't go for the bleeding hearts stories like Ginji does). There's only one flashback to his youth and it's an unpleasant one, so I'm inclined to think that that has something to do with it. He also acknowledges that if he ever slips his leash, he's a very dangerous person. It's his friendship with Ginji that keeps him from doing that.

Not only is there the waitress girl, but there is Himeko, "Lady Poison" who seems to be working a delivery service and is with the bad guys

Transporters are very flexible in alligences. Akabane certainly is as he'll help Ban and Ginji one minute and turn them over the next. Ironically Akabane is probably my favorite psychopath in any anime. He's the only one I ever miss when he's gone from episodes for a long time as he livens things up and Ginji's reaction to him is hilarious. Akabane is just in it for the fight, which is why he's so unpredictable.

This is really FUBAR so I could totally get behind the OTP.

Several people on my FList are behind this one. Himeko is probably the only female who can put up with Ban for extended periods of time and Ginji and Himeko are the only people Ban really cares about enough to die fighting for. There are several OTPs on the show though (one being two guys).

That's definitely the vibe I got from Sanzo. There is the one bit where the monks discuss why the master took him in, and you can tell he is so hurt. It's sort of the 'I don't care if they all don't care about me. I am better then all of them anyway.'

With Ryo, it's sort of, all the kids are little beasts and as they slowly grow up they learn to interact with others. But the guy never got to. Not even with his family.

Ginji really grows on you in the Limitless Fortress arc as he's more Kenshin than you'd expect on first glance.

Interesting. There does seem to be the incongruous with his present personality fact that he was a gang leader. Hmmmm.

That's why I loved Ban right away. He's a good guy, just rather pragmatic

Yes. He will do the right thing, but he thinks about consequences and problems. Ginji will just leap in head first. I think they need each other. Ginji to balance out Ban's detachment from the world and his rather bleak view of things and Ban to keep Ginji from turning into some Don Quixote type person with no means to live.

Akabane is just in it for the fight, which is why he's so unpredictable.

Oh, I am so glad he doesn't get killed off soon. I love him. Evil and all, but so fun.

Ginji and Himeko are the only people Ban really cares about enough to die fighting for

I really want to know what happened in the past (but don't spoil me :)) I love the bit where Himeko is talking to Ginji and is so sure that Ban won't come for Ginji, but then of course, he does. And Himeko is taken aback. I think after her brother's death she just assumed (reasonably enough) that while Ban might pretend to care about someone, he doesn't really and is a cold blooded psycho.

There are several OTPs on the show though (one being two guys).

Eeee. Can't wait for more OTPness.

There does seem to be the incongruous with his present personality fact that he was a gang leader.

And not just any gang leader. He was the gang leader who pwned most of the Limitless Fortress and had minions that can give even Ban a good fight. Of course, Ban was the only person Ginji could never beat, which is why they became friends (though they never really explain why they were fighting in the first place).

Ginji to balance out Ban's detachment from the world and his rather bleak view of things

Ginji is the Pollyanna to Ban's Eeyore. There is a lot of depth to Ban though and he gets more so the further you go. I personally like the episodes where they're trying to get back a violin and you find some interesting things about Ban that you'd never expect.

Oh, I am so glad he doesn't get killed off soon. I love him.

Nah, Akabane is too backstabbing to ever die. He gets the crap kicked out of him once, but then he had that coming the entire series. He's a great cackling psycho (actually more a hissing psycho, but still fun).

I think after her brother's death she just assumed (reasonably enough) that while Ban might pretend to care about someone, he doesn't really and is a cold blooded psycho.

I think Himeko believed Ban was a good person up until the point that he killed her brother, then she second guessed everything about him. Ban IS a good person, it's just the fact that he didn't explain to Himeko (how could he really) what he did and why. Himeko sort of gets it later on and pretty obviously develops something of a crush on Ban (though interestingly, even though what happened gets explained to the audience, it never gets explained to Himeko, so even after she sort of starts liking Ban she still has no explaination why Ban killed her brother. FUBAR enough for you?).

Ban also tends to get his shirt destroyed a lot. Not that I'm complaining, it's just that this series has fanservice the whole way around.

Hmmmmm. Minions. I always wanted some. But yes, the more you learn about the characters, the more interesting they become.

He's a great cackling psycho

I love how he tells Himeko he killed all the people in the interceptor service because he was so terrified. He is never ruffled.

I think Himeko believed Ban was a good person up until the point that he killed her brother, then she second guessed everything about him.

Which makes sense. She thought she misinterpreted something so basic about him (good person and now he killed her brother), then everything else she thought must have been wrong too.

after she sort of starts liking Ban she still has no explaination why Ban killed her brother. FUBAR enough for you

Heck yeah. Why doesn't Ban explain though? Seriously.

Yeah, Hven is quite well endowed.

Heck yeah. Why doesn't Ban explain though? Seriously.

It has to do with why Ban killed the brother in the first place, as he really did it for Himeko in a way. I think his not telling her is a way of still protecting her and also I think there's part of Ban that doesn't really want to be forgiven. He refers to himself as "damned" or "cursed" several times (it's implied it has to do with the Snakebite) and I don't think he ever really forgave himself for doing what he had to do, so why should Himeko? Ban is funny like that. He'll knock sense into Ginji and is actually pretty thoughtful when they talk, but he tends to not take his own advice a lot of the time. It's just a Ban trait.

I have several posts about Ban in my LJ (and also a bunch of episode recaps in memories) if you ever feel the need.

He is never ruffled.

Akabane also reads Ban ridiculously well because, as Akabane points out later, if Ban didn't have Ginji and Himeko, he would be exactly like Akabane since Ban gets off on fighting too. Ban's response is pretty much, "yeah, I know, but I DO have people I'm accountable to and I'm not like you for their sake".

aaahh i'll live vicariously through your travel posts and pics. i, of course, am in so much anticipation over your future Japan trip. :D

Hot Gimmick is very complex - which is why i loved it because they're all so fun to pyschonanalyze (i majored in psychology). now you've read all of it, Ryo is possibly one that would pop out as the sanest characters there. he does need a lot of growing up, but he is by far a bit realistic since Hatsumi is really emotional, thus of course, she sort of lacks the objectiveness since everything is happening to her.

Poor Shinogu though.

She is definitely too emotional and waffl-y. And overanalizes things. Fairly typical for a girl her age though.

if possible, can you squeeze me in your carry on luggage to Japan? *lol*

Hatsumi does overanalyze stuff, but thats how kids are. i wanted to whack her many times just to get some sense into her. which is why you can totally feel for Ryo - who is so frustrated at his gf's lack of common sense sometimes. ;) but i totally loved the kissing-in-the-train-station-scene *melts*

the Shinogu angle is definitely twisted. its like the manga-ka played up the "bestfriend that never seems to be good for the heroine" one notch up and she ended up with the "adopted brother" role. :(

i haven't spoiled myself on the future HG volumes though.

Yeah, Shinogu doesn't have much of a chance. After all, adopted or not, Hatsumi thought he was blood brother for most of her life so that's all she thinks of him as.

I have nothing of import to add, just chiming in that I completely and totally agree about Ryo, and I'm so relieved someone else sees it. I'm tired of being blasted with "RYO'S A RAPIST" in Hot Gimmick forums. I mean, come ON. He's a jerk with bad social skills, but that's a far cry from, say, Azuma. *OP of the post that set you off* ^^;

My reason for ranting is because people were comparing the two relationships. I don't care who likes what, but these two couples are different and one is obviously more mature than other IMHO, that is.

Also, I wouldn't call Ryoki honest. He pretended to be nice to persuade her to go to the hotel with him. He used her weakness against her, and basically lied. He doesn't have the childish honesty Domyouji does, who will tell Tsukushi exactly what's on his mind and won't sugarcoat anything. My two cents.

All in all, sorry if I offended you. I don't wnat to get off on a bad start, so I'll admit that I agree with some of the things about Ryoki there. It was kinda sweet when he skipped those exams for her, but anyhow >_> *cough*...

Oh, I agree they are different and I much prefer Hanadan (in large part because Tsukushi won't let Domyouji get away with stuff). It's the sort of 'Hot Gimmick' as worthless feeling I was getting (warranted or not, could have just been me) that got me temporarily o:o

Re: hotel. You mean at the end of vol 10. I don't know, that doesn't bother me. Is he as awesome as Domyouji? No. But I like him OK...

You didn't offend me at all! It would be a really boring world if we all felt the same about everything. I just wanted to state a different point of view and hope I didn't offend back!
