I can’t get used to this weather. Even though it’s rainy, it’s so warm I don’t need a jacket. Much as I am enjoying it, it’s a bit disturbing.
You know what else I am enjoying? But without the disturbing side effects? The first, subbed ep of the second season of Hana Yori Dango, a Japanese show that is like Veronica Mars on crack and has everything I could ever want: strong willed adorable girl heroine (Makino Tsukushi is this close to turning me bi) who might be in a star-crossed love affair (and that is the crux of the story) but still studies hard for her exams, trying to get into law school, and maintains friends, and is just blunt, and awesome. OMG, it is TOTALLY Veronica Mars! We have the hot angsty rich boy in love with her (Domyouji Tsukasa) who used to torment her in school but who fell for her when she fought back and after a lot of hell managed to win her over (see S1 and my favorite drama scene ever, with him letting people beat him within an inch of his life because if he even lifted a finger, they would hurt Makino). We have awesome parents for the girl (Makino’s family is ADORABLENESS) and the obligatory scary, awful parent (Domyouji Kaede is scary. She would never hit her son a la Aaron Echolls because…very declasse but she always gets what she wants and is psycho effective and if I were the OTP, I’d just give up), and bizarre clothes and awesome friendships. Yeah. Did I mention a whole bevy of boys with cheekbones of death?
I am impatiently waiting for next Friday already. I haven’t done it for any drama yet, but I am certainly watching unsubbed as soon as it comes out, and then watching subs a few days later, because I don’t want to wait the extra days to watch with subs. Yes, I am insane.
I got up extra early today to watch the first hour subbed.
OMG! They mention that Yuki likes Soujiro! Eeeeeee! (in voiceover intros for each character). There is hope they will do the Y/S storyline! Yes! And they mention that somehow he is more chivalrous than before. *dies* And the de facto leader now that Domyouji is away. Hmmm. Does the de facto leadership goes to the hottest? Because I am so behind that. I love the fact that Yuki calls him and yells at him on Tsukushi’s behalf when Makino gets the red card. You go, girl.
"Bimboni" means "bum." New Japanese word :)
Akira! It will never cease to amuse me in an awesome fashion that he is a mob offspring. And the mediator (the thing with the tea ceremony? Awesome) who quietly runs everything. The fact that he likes older women? Even better. Hope for meeeeeee :P (Well, I am not that much older but whatever).
How in character that Rui is the one who went to college (even though of course he didn't have to). Rui the college student? *dies* Seventeen times as hot. You know, I normally don’t care for bleached hair on Asian men (e.g. Yamapi never looked as hot as he did with jet black hair in Kurosagi) but I agree with
meganbmoore, Oguri Shun who plays Rui, really rocks the light hair. And the white clothes. He is so gorgeous. Oh my.
I love the little scene in the restaurant where Makino tells Rui she doesn't miss Domyouji because if they met again, he would just do as he pleases again and her normal high school life would be over. The lady doth protest too much and I love how Rui so doesn’t buy it, It’s interesting, how she keeps denying and denying her feelings to everyone this whole ep, even to herself, a bit, until she can’t control it any more and just can’t hold it in and tells the truth, about how much she loved Domyouji, to his sister, crying. I love the look on Tsubaki’s face then. It’s a bit maternal, but I think she is also happy for her little brother, because she doesn’t want him to end up the way she did, and because, let’s face it, even if Kaede doesn’t think so, Domyouji needs Makino in order to function as a normal member of society. She is the only one who can keep him on a leash and ‘civilize’ him: he was scarily out of control and destructive before he fell in love with her (I always wonder if it’s some sort of sublimated extreme form of attention seeking from his mother who clearly doesn’t see her children as people but as little automatons). Even the F4 couldn’t reign him in. I don’t think it was in this version, but I remember the scene in Meteor Garden where the housekeeper was talking to SC about DMS and was basically grateful to her, because of how DMS used to come home with blood on him and his family had to cover up more and more of his fights because he just went on to do it more and more and basically indicating he was spiraling out and now stopped doing so because of her.
Kaede might think that if Tsukushi was out of the way, Domyouji would just do what she wants him to, and marry Shigeru, and eventually take over the company blah blah blah. But the thing is, she is horribly wrong. Domyouji is not Tsubaki, who was married off instead of being allowed to be with whom she loved, and has adjusted and is a functioning member of the upper class now, any unhappiness she has, private. If Domyouji didn’t have the impetus of Makino (whether to be with her, or to protect her, or what not), he would self-destruct pretty quickly in a very spectacular way. There are only so many brawls one would be able to hush up, and he’d probably eventually kill somebody. Tsubaki is pretty functional. Domyouji? Is not. He might eventually get there, if he is with Makino but for now? No way (though I do love that he is maturing. I always thought the story was as much about Domyouji changing into a kind of guy who could and should be with Makino as it was about her falling for him, or them overcoming his mother from hell).
To get back to Makino, I love her saying that Rui is now a friend with whom she is at ease because R/T friendship is one of my favorite things in HYD. They would never work as a couple (I agree with
hope_fuleigh that he sees her as this adorable kitten who always gets tangled up in a string) but as friends, they are perfect. I also love how he is always buying her food. Heeeee. You know, I did not get the vibe of him liking her romantically this season either (at least so far). Strong care and friendship, but not romance.
Oh, Makino. Could you be more of a girl crush? I love how she is 'he is probably fallen for some blond bimbo in NY" and being all gruff but OMG, she so misses him. And when describing him in intro she is 'he is the worst kinda guy, rude and violent and stupid' but then she talks about how he is the one she loves. They are so made for each other, both uncomplicated, and straightforward, and really determined. But I love how she decides to pursue her studies anyway and get into Eitoku U and become a lawyer and everything. I love that she is not one of those heroines for whom the men in her life is her sole reason for being. She is independent and her own person, no matter how in love she might be. I love how her former classmates describe her as going straight for the goal (heh, like Domyouji?)
Huh, so with the subs it’s clear, that Domyouji and Tsukushi kept in touch at first, after he went to NYC (I would kill to see one of their conversations. It would be cute AND hilarious) and he even came to visit, but then all of a sudden, all contact stopped (and awww, somehow knowing that they kept in touch at first makes me feel worse for the poor babies). That little montage of her trying to call him for weeks/months on that gold plated monstrosity of a cell phone he gave her (telling her she could always reach him with this) and the automated ‘it’s out of service’ message and her disappointed face? Kills me. And then she was worried something happened but bumped into Sakurako and found out Domyouji was fine and the way she deflates because she says that it’s like someone created a small hole in her heart and as the time went on it got bigger and bigger? AWWWWW. Poor darling.
Interestingly, if you look at it as an abstract situation, without taking into account the individuals, you’d assume it’s a normal enough situation. Young couple in a relationship, go long distance and gradually cool off and get over it. Actually I bet Kaede, who really MUST be behind all this, probably hoped that this is what Makino would think. I bet Domyouji is doing this to protect Makino somehow though *bites tongue* It’s interesting because he is so crazily protective of her, even though he is not a gentle person at all. Heh.
Of course, I don’t think Kaede realized Makino’s strong will, which is almost as great as Domyouji’s monomania (hey, the guy has few enough loving things in his life to want to hold on to what he’s got).
Apropos of nothing, I have to mention the sheer awesomeness of Makino talking to F3 in the lounge. They ARE an OT5, seriously. I love how Soujiro tells her she will find a good man, but he’ll pass and Akira raises his hand ‘me too’ and she throws back that who wants them anyway. Awesome.
You know, the whole Junpei storyline is a lot less bothersome with subs, so sorry, HYD TPTB. I still am not keen on it, but it doesn’t bug me. (Side note, why is Junpei pointing at the painting of ‘Victory Leading the People’ when talking about Joan of Arc. Confused much?
But ugh, Junpei is such a slimy git. But yeah, the red card does make sense in context here. Because they do think Domyouji is the one behind it, because he called whoever and told him about it (though of course it’s not D, it’s Junpei), but the thing is, I don’t think they listened carefully to the voice or even cared who put the card in. They don’t care if it’s real or not (after all, if you think about it, F4 have graduated so who cares, anyway). They are just awful awful people looking for an excuse for bullying. They believe it because any excuse to pick on Tsukushi, the outsider, the odd one, is good with them.
I love how she realizes something is wrong about the red card, though.
But anyway, to fast forward.
I love love love the scene where she sees him again. I’ve written too much about it earlier, but the whole thing remains incredibly adorable. And hot, with the staring (did MatsuJun decide to go to Yamapi school of hot angsty stares of UST?) I love how he looks like he can’t believe his eyes, and takes his sunglasses off and just mouths her name. I love his asking how she got there, and he is all brusque and she is so happy and just tells him she is glad to see him but he is all ‘you didn’t answer my question’ because I don’t think he can bear to see her this happy and sweet and not just glomp her but he can’t (I am sure because of something to do with Kaede). And she makes that adorable airplane joke and he drags her off and they have their non-conversation conversation and he asks her if she came to meet him and he so wants the answer to be both yes (because he’s in love with her) and no (because that would make what he has to do easier) and if she flew all the way over there and now he has to push her away, that’s even more horrid. And she lies and says she didn’t come to meet him (oh woobies!)
I admit I cracked up when he is on the phone and she says to herself 'he got a lot more serious' but the way she is looking it's more like 'and hotter, too.'
And then he leaves her, and tells her to be safe and OMG. I love that Rui followed, just to see everything was OK.
And then I had to leave but not before watching the scene with Tsubaki and Makino’s confession (as described above) and, of course, the baseball field scene which was gorgeous and painful and guuuuuuh. And she accuses him of the red tag thing, and he is (understandably) really confused as to what’s going on, and there is all her pain for his clearly not wanting to see her, and his pain because he has to pretend to not want to see her, and that whole conversation is just so gorgeous. Mmmmm, I just love when he uses his ‘gentle’ voice. And she tries to hit him (echoes of their initial contact in S1) and he dodges and I think it’s a symbol for their relationship now and tells her he isn’t a kid any more to be playing and walks off.
Oh, and to conclude, something I wrote in
hope_fuleigh’s journal because it really sums up why D/T is one of my ultimate ships: the moment the two of them actually came on screen together, it was like a switch flipped on. I really love how they are always in a state of hyper-attention around each other. And that reunion scene? I've already rewatched it four times and it's even money whether I like it better with subs or without because with subs I can understand what they are saying (her adorable attempt as a joke about the airplane, while he is totally devouring her with his eyes but doesn't say anything lovely but just drags her off all brusque) but without I can concentrate on the faces and OMG the longing.
I just love how no matter what he says, his face betrays him. Domyouji is an incredibly straightforward person, even more so than Makino, so that makes him a really poor liar. Anyone with half a brain can see that he is mad for her, but of course Tsukushi has a good reason not to see it: she is nervous and in love and so much at stake (I love that he went through hell to win her, but once he won her, she really sticks by. She went on that huge, 14 hour long flight to see him, after he hasn't contacted her for months! Go Makino!)
ETA: Re Shigeru
I love that the end of the ep brought Shigeru in. Not just because that whole storyline was one of my favorites and because Shigeru is a great character, but because of what it says about Domyouji's feelings for Tsukushi. He loves her because she is Tsukushi, the unique entity that is her. Kaede clearly thinks Shigeru, besides being suitable and a barrier to D/T, would totally be a good replacement and get Domyouji to switch because she is tomboyish and rebellious and straightforward. Sort of a replacement Makino. But that's the thing. Makino is not replaceable for him. He doesn't love her type. He loves her.
