I am still thinking about Battlestar Galactica’s ‘Unfinished Business.’

You know what I was thinking about in relation to Kara/Lee/Dee/Anders polygon (it really IS like a Korean drama). I have no idea what Lee would want to do now and that is because I have NO grasp on his relationship with Dee. I have no idea whether his feeling towards her is strong affection and admiration and appreciation for being a good wife and standing by him in the past year (I have no idea even if she is a good wife or an OK one) or a ‘she is attractive and I can’t have the love of my life so might as well marry her’ or anything in between. I don’t find Lee/Dee scenes very interesting, so on one level I don’t mind not having many, but it does result in my having no clue on his view of her. Opinions? Thoughts? How does Lee view Dee generally? What are his feelings towards her?

I am in the middle of Farscape’s ‘A Throne for a Loss’ and will have more meta once I finish…I do want to note once again, how even this early on, John and Aeryn seem to instinctively stick together: during the many ship lurches of this episode, guess who ends up falling on top of each other? I also love that when D’Argo and Aeryn bond, it’s over Crichton’s deficiencies and I love that this Crichton (still in his beige human colors) wants to negotiate, figure things out with the Tavleks.

Of course, this ep, imperceptibly, like a lot of early S1 eps is inching towards the fact that no, nothing is safe and Universe is a cruel place. The whole storyline with Zhaan and the captured Tavlek who she tries to break of his addiction to his gauntlet (which has chemicals that are steroid-like) is an after-school special turned on its head. She gets through to him, convinces him that he shouldn’t put it on just because he’s been trained to do so, he should think on his own. And at the end of the ep, she sees him again as he vid-calls her. And he thanks her and he tells her he believes in what she said about choice and then he shows her his arm. With the gauntlet back on. And he tells her ‘It’s MY choice.’ Yes, he picked the thing that will make him a more efficient weapon. No safe lessons here.

Or (on a smaller scale), the fact that Moya tries to haul cargo (legitimate activity) but instead Tavleks only pretend they are customers and instead kidnap Rygel because they think he is worth something. No safe place. Also, how interesting that everyone is OK with ditching Rygel, except for the fact that they need part of Moya’s equipment that he has on him, and that Crichton is NOT at all OK with ditching Rygel even before they find out Rygel has a necessary ship part. Plus, a bit of grim foreshadowing when D’Argo in his gauntlet-enhanced rage threatens to rip Pilot’s arms off.

John and Aeryn? Heeeee. I love the bit where they are walking in the forest. The deadpan humor of that conversation just…guuuuuuh. Love it. I also love the scene where Crichton wakes up in Aeryn’s prowler after her punch knocked him out cold and he tells her that if she hits him again, she better make sure he doesn’t wake up afterwards. In a way, that whole interlude is both funny and telling: she doesn’t see anything out of the ordinary in her method (and it tells a wealth of info about PKs and their lack of discussion or compromise) and he? He might still be an innocent at this early stage, but he is no weakling.

More meta later.

In dorama news, I got sidetracked from watching Tatta Hitotsu No Koi. First I got caught up in watching My Girl, then the never-ending annoyingness of the protagonists taking forever to straighten their act in Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang almost made me give up on the whole drama thing (I think I am going to give kdramas a rest for a bit. I think I ODed). Be that as it may, the fact remains that I haven’t watched any THNK since ep 4.

But, [livejournal.com profile] kitsune714 and [livejournal.com profile] winterspel’s awesome posts on it reminded me of it and so off I went. A.k.a. ep 5 which I am in the middle of. I love it!. I think I’ll stick to jdramas for a bit for a faster pace, anyway, but also, THNK is just so a drama done right. It’s a bit odd to be so behind though because as people on my flist are angsting over the misery of eps 7 and 8, I am all gleeful about the mushy adorableness that ep 5 currently is (I am in the middle of Hiroto and Nao’s date).

I just love to see Hiroto smile, let go, enjoy himself. I really do think he is the nicest dorama lead I’ve come across. Not my favorite: nothing beats Chen Ling from Mars, but the nicest. He is such a sweet, responsible, overburdened young guy, I just want to mother him and bake him scones (seriously, Kame, eat something! It’s the first time I feel like telling a male lead to stuff his face. Preferably with something with lard). He and Nao are such ‘pure spirits’ whatever that corny phrase means. In a way, they strike me as too fragile, too earnest, too something for the world around them and in a drama with cemeteries popping up, that’s a bit of a fear.

I really love that scene in the beginning of ep 5 with Nao and Hiroto in the café. When Hiroto tells her he has something to say about her thinking he already has a girlfriend, I love that despite her composure you see Nao’s hands clench in her lap. I love that when he tells Nao that his mother lied to her, he has no gf, and a little desperately adds that he will swear to God, if she wants, and Nao quietly says she believes him, Hiroto’s face is so full of disbelief and it’s as if he’s been holding in a breath and he’s been reprieved now. I love it. Kame is a very expressive actor, isn’t he? Both Kame and the actress who plays Nao (I am blanking) have such expressive, clear faces, it’s like looking into mirrors: every emotion is reflected. It fits the character more than being an innate characteristic, I think: neither is good at subterfuge (from what little I’ve seen of Nobuta Wo Produce, Kame’s character in that one doesn’t have the same transparency. As Shuji, Kame is expressive but in a very different way).

I love seeing Hiroto be almost giddy (well, for Hiroto. He is a very contained guy) as he prepares for the date with Nao. I love seeing the gang have fun on that date: Hiroto gets to enjoy himself. It’s interesting, in ‘revealing’ to Nao the fact that Hiroto’s Dad killed himself, Nao’s Father only made Nao love Hiroto more. Nao’s Father is so not versed in girl psychology. If your daughter is in love with a guy she thinks is a totally sweet, wonderful guy, and she finds out he also had a bad tragedy in the past? She’ll want to take care of him, and maybe admire him for taking care of the family or whatever. NOT decide to ditch. Also, Nao’s Father? I don’t know about Nao, but if my Dad pulled out a dossier on a guy I am dating, I’d freak and there would be an interesting discussion between us about stalking and boundaries.

Oh, Nao and Hiroto, you poor darlings. How do I love you? I really buy that you are so much in love with each other, so necessary to each other. Doramas usually do a very good job of showing the OTP and this is no exception. In a way, this ties with something I mentioned in my Battlestar Galactica post: great, ‘can’t let go’ love is usually tied with dysfunction. Hiroto loves Nao so much, and she is so necessary to him, in part because she is the one ray of light in his very hard life. He’s given up his dreams of college to take care of the family and the business, his Mother is a drunken bitch, even his love for his little brother is fraught with anxiety over the kid’s health. Nao is the first dream he’s allowed himself to have in years, something only for himself, something that only brings him joy. And Nao? She’s been unworldly-cocooned for so long due to her illness, this is her first stab at normalcy, with all the earnestness and purity of a first love. Her illness and her isolation robbed her of defenses and barriers and she is terrifyingly whole-hearted and open in her love. She loves Hiroto so much in part because she doesn’t know about stops, about protecting herself.

I do wonder. I know this is a 10 ep drama and this is already on ep 8 and no mention of a health relapse for Nao? Wouldn’t two eps be a bit sudden to bring it up? Maybe they’ll get a happy ending? Maybe? Please??????
