Fushigi Yuugi: why yes, all the hot men want me!

I started watching Fushigi Yuugi, an anime about a girl who gets sucked into a book and lands in Ancient China where she finds out her destiny is to summon celestial warriors and fight evil. And get an OTP, of course.

I saw about 5 episodes and enjoyed some of it quite well, but don't have much of an interest in continuing (though knowing me, I probably will. Heck, I'll probably finish HYD at some point, too). A pity they couldn't combine the Hana Yori Dango story and Fushigi Yuugi artwork.



Scattered thoughts follow.

I really love the theme song. Though in one credit shot, are Miaka and Tamahome nekkid? Startlingly, the subtitle for that is "open yourself to eternity." Hmmmm. But good on them. When I was 15, I was still getting past the idea that boys have cooties.

Five episodes in, Miaka is kinda annoying. I think I would like her a lot better if I was the target audience (a 14 year old girl, I imagine). Well, if I am charitable, I'd say she is cheerful and tries to fight and is funny sometimes, even if she is immature, shallow and dumb as a brick (But hey, she's 15). Her obsession with food I actually find amusing. At least she is not a mopey dope like OVA-Hitomi (I like the series Hitomi). Not the best heroine, but I don't hate her. Even if I really want to smack her. Also, I can see why Tamahome likes her, but why does Hotohori? A mystery.

I like the animation style. Sorry, HYD was way too artsy for me. I am a simple person and I like my bright colors.

I like the funniness of this. Like when Miaka and her friend Yui are attacked by slavers and their reaction: "Are you Chinese acrobats?" and you see a little cartoon of the acrobats and the slavers exasperatedly reply: "no, we are slave traders." Or when Miaka tries out fighting moves she's seen on pro-wresting on TV. Or Nuriko literally dragging Tamahome off, tied hand and foot with a big rope. Or (my favorite so far), when Tamahome rescues the girls and they tell him they are very grateful and his reaction? "If you are so grateful, can you pay me?" And when they say they can't, he walks off huffing something to the effect of "argh, had to rescue girls with no money." Mmmmm, I think Miaka will have to pay for her own dates :P

Tamahome is hot. Yes, I am shallow. Hotohori is even hotter. And he is nice and quiet and his narcissism is amusing. I think he is my FY crush. Or most likely, I'm up for a FY threesome.

I've seen three episodes of FY. Ani and I wanted to check out the anime so we bought a random VHS tape with subbed episodes. We start watching and BAM SEXXORZ! There's just so much... sex in FY! It was kinda jarring, and I was young.

Also, 50% of the show can be summed up thusly...

Tamahome: "MIAKAAAAAAAAA!"

I have to say Nuriko is really cracking me up so far. I want him and Hotohori to get together even though I know it won't happen.

I love the art style. It's seriously gorgeous and I love the 'traditional' outfits. The story is actually fun too, I just wish I liked Miaka better. I don't hate her or anything, but I guess how mature can you be at 15? She did almost kill herself to save Tamahome and Hotohori, so points for her.

I never made it past the first episode, so all I know about Miaka is really fanon... I think mainly the problem is that her best friend is a lot more mature, so she just suffers in comparison.

I am about 7 episodes in so I haven't gotten to know Yui much at all yet, except for her reading the book.

The thing with Miaka, is one one hand I think it's realistic that a 15 year old won't be the most mature or developed or whatever, and she is a very nice person who is cheerful and extremely loyal, but otoh, she is hardly someone I'd deeply love or respect so...

I do have to say, the thing is sooooo full of sexual subtext.

There is a scene where both Hotohori and Tamahome have this thing where they are infusing Miaka with their blood (which is only fair since she almost killed herself in order to save them and it's that that did save them) and so everyone has to be topless, Miaka included and she is all "I can feel them flowing inside me and merging etc etc" and I swear to God it looks and sounds and is described as a threesome. Heeeeee.

Most anime is subtext loaded. If you want an anime that sort of takes that, runs with it and then makes fun of it, Vandread is that anime.

I was just making the comment to someone on my FList about the Freudian charged transformation scene in the anime Pretear. Shojo is notorious for the subtext.

Nakago! Aside from his general evilness, I love Nakago. Hotohori is actually my favorite. Yuu Watase has a tendency to make very interesting secondary men, but her main men tend to be boring as dirt. I was never much of a Tamahome fan simply because he was sort of bland compared to Hotohori. The woman knows how to make her bishounen though. She's well known for that.

I actually like both Hotohori and Tamahome (Tamahome just amused the heck out of me, and hey, who wouldn't want a boyfriend that devoted :P. Plus, so pretty!). But yes, Hotohori is even cooler. Seriously, threesomes were invented for situations like this.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about having a guy who had much better hair than me and KNEW it. Hotohori's vanity is actually a cute little character trait after a while. I loathe Miaka though. LOATHE. No one, by being a stupid, bumbling, gluttonous, whiny, 15 year old has 12 super bishounen falling all over her. Especially when it's obvious she simply can't take care of herself. She's like the mother of all Mary Sues. LOATHE. Anyway, Hotohori and Tasuki were my favorites. I had a soft spot for Nakago too, because I always have a soft spot for the baddies.

Re: Miaka. After all the Victorian lit (and Bollywood), I have a pretty high tolerance for helpless not too bright heroines. She does seem rather nice, at least.

White (or in the anime, pale gold) hair guy is Nakago, the chief bad guy of the series.
