Yes, still My Girl
Nov. 14th, 2006 02:09 pmMy Girl is the most awesome thing since sliced bread.
OK, ep 11 has that painful painful scene at dinner with JW, SH, YR and GC. Because JW has finally snapped and after seeing YR and GC be all cute in the jewelry store decided to do a little brutal demonstration of why GC/YR are not possible. And he nudges GC to propose (GC won’t do it anyway) etc etc etc. And so finally Yu-Rin can’t cope and leaves and he leaves with her and just as I was hating JW so badly (and for the first time), he whispers ‘I am sorry’ and his eyes are wet and I am a goner.
I feel so bad for him. He is a good guy caught in an awful situation and I don’t blame him for lashing out at least once. And YR snaps at him, tiredly, ‘You didn’t have to show me. I know it already’ [re: Gong-Chan and SH].
And then, OMG, this to die-for scene follows. Because JW tells her: “I said I’ll give you my all. Nothing matters. Can’t you just come to me, please?” and he is pleading OMG OMG OMG. And YR (who still isn’t sure about his level of seriousness) responds ‘Don’t you know, love is immune to lies?’ and he whispers back, with tears in his voice, ‘Doesn’t matter. My love is real.’
EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
And she looks startled but of course it’s too late for him. Of course, I love how later, he is the one who basically reveals to Yu-Rin that Gong-Chan is in love with her through commenting how much Gong-Chan has been into snowy days lately and he knows that what he is doing is probably going to hook them up, but I love how he wants her happy (earlier he told her not to make him into a villain but he is far from that).
And so, when GC walks down the stars after conclusively breaking up with evil, whiny, dreadful SH, he finds YR sitting on the stairs by herself. ANGST.
(Btw, and a complete non sequitur, how awesome that Gong-Chan bought YR batteries for her snow-globe when the previous ones died and he didn’t know which batteries to get so he got all kinds.’ Heeeee. And he also told her that ‘I will never leave you to face anything alone.’ LOVE).
And then there is almost a confession because they are on a hill and YR says she is going to tell family she’s leaving because she can’t deal with it all any more and GC really loses it and he is almost yelling (and he never yells) ‘It is hell for me as well. I tell myself I am crazy 100 times a day’ and we are heading into smoochy territory but Grandpa in the hospital all of a sudden so I guess not. And the look on their faces as they have to face the fact that they will have to be cousins forever (as Grandpa is clearly is no condition for shocks). So devastated. I just want to hug them.
So she goes to the 63 building to escape and so does he. And she calls him when he is in the elevator (because she thinks he’s at work) and asks him to wave to see if she can see him and you see him wave in the elevator though obviously no she won’t see and he is so gentle and sweet and sad. And once she hangs up, she whispers ‘I love you.’ And they miss each other because of the elevators. ARGH!
And did I mention Jung-Woo proposes (and OMG, poor GC has to drive YR to the place) but she can’t accept and he asks her ‘am I invisible in your eyes?’ OMG. And she exits and GC is still there, looking like hell, and she says she can’t marry JW and that JW knows she’s a fake. GC goes to see JW and JW tells him ‘You can’t not be cousins, You can’t love her.’ OMG. (Yeah, I’ve been using OMG a lot).
So then Gong-Chan is basically working himself to death and never coming home and he is transferring to Jeju. And they go on their last pre-his-leaving evening somewhere and he is asleep in the taxi (or at least his eyes are closed) and she tells him ‘just whenever it snows, can you not view me as your cousin’ and he makes a move to open his eyes because he wasn’t asleep and she tells him ‘you can’t open your eyes, you have to pretend you didn’t hear’ or something to that effect.
And then his flight is leaving but is delayed because of snow so he stands outside catching snowflakes in his palms and OMG, poor guy, the look on his face! He will always remember her now every time it snows and he remembers what she said. And I love that even when the snow stops he says that ‘it doesn’t stop snowing.’ EEEEEEEEEE!!!! You know, I bawl like mad in ‘light’ kdramas, like this and Full House and Goong and a serious one like A Love to Kill made me a sobbing mess. Maybe I should stay away from other serious ones :)
And then and then and THEN he throws away his liar’s coin, even though it stopped snowing and drives like crazy to the place where he formal intro to the world was supposed to be.
And he RUNS into the hall and sees her there and he grabs her and they stare at each other and several planets combust from the chemistry and she asks him, “Gong-Chan, what are you doing here?” and he keeps on staring at her and replies ‘I am snowed in’ (OMG, so EMOTIONAL and AWESOME and the best line in the drama) and she desperately tells him ‘You can’t be found out’ and his response? ‘I won’t lie.’
OMG. And then there is hugging and it’s amazing and he grabs her hand and they run out. But of course, JW and SH see this and the look on JW’s face makes me want to cry. The look on SH’s face makes me want to punch her.
And GC and YR are in the airport pretend-eloping and it’s totally great and sweet and they are joking about warm countries v. cold and it’s just adorable. Gong-Chan is such a guy, he earlier tells her ‘you know how I feel. Must I put it into words?’ Such a guy ;) A guy who bakes awesome cakes, of course (how funny is it that he is good at cooking because he is just methodical and follows instructions to the T). And they hold hands and he tells her he won’t let go and she should promise the same.
And GC’s troubles are only beginning because of course he must oppose YR being placed on family registry so Grandpa is ‘please tell me it’s not because you are worried about inheritance’ and GC says that it is (though of course it’s not the case) and OMG, Grandpa is BRUTAL to him but GC is willing to take everything so as to protect YR and take care of her and make their future possible.
And he is all dejected after this and she takes him out and tells him she is remarkably think-skinned so she will stand by him no matter how tough it gets. And then she grins ‘you told me I amuse you when you are bored’ so she says she’ll amuse him now, to cheer him up and she sings a completely cheerful ridiculous song and he is actually laughing and she is willing to act like a dork to make him feel better. Despite all the misery, I think this is the happiest he’s been in ages. He was always inside the shell with SH but it’s not the case with YR (btw, the bit where he calls YR from Japan just to tell her he misses her? Awwww).
I love the convo between JW and GC when JW tells GC that he is going to take YR to New York even if she doesn’t want to and points out that if this all comes out, the family will forgive GC but not YR. I love how protective he is of YR. And GC replies ‘it wasn’t a choice’ [the confession in the lobby etc]. ‘It wasn’t a rational choice.’
And then SH does a bit of emotional blackmail on YR (hate her) and JW looks at the snow globe and saying ‘it’s always snowing there’ but then saying how fragile that world is and how easily it can shatter and ‘I want to keep you intact.’
And she agrees to go to New York with him to save everything even though they won’t be a couple and JW is so much in love with her, he tells her ‘You can exploit me’ (though how much must it suck to have the girl of your dreams look at you as merely an escape hatch to save her OTP?) and she tells him she will have to push GC away because he will never let her go otherwise and the ANGST. The thing is, JW can’t bear to see her cry. He’ll protect her even if it breaks his heart. And of course, he also overhears Gong-Chan tell Sae-Hyung when she suggests he is crazy to fall for Yu-Rin ‘Yes, I’ve gone mad. I can’t see anything outside of her and I don’t want to be sane ever again.’
So, in a scene that made me BAWL, Jung-Woo tells Yu-Rin the true ending of the Donkey Ears fairytale and OMG, he really is her bamboo field and he is going to be razed so she can be happy and he whispers ‘be happy’ and walks away and I love the symbolism of him going down the elevator at the same time Gong-Chan is going up. I am ecstatic for the lovers while heart-broken for JW.
And then YR and GC meet AWWW and he tells her the real cousin is alive and she whispers ‘I am so glad’ and I am crying.
And then they walk outside and he says 'rally' (he usual cry) and then he adds ‘here's for rallying’ and kisses her forehead. And then he asks her (OMG he learned to tease with her) ‘Aren't you disappointed?’ And she blurts out ‘yes’ before she realizes it and can backtrack. HEEEE. And *hyperventilate hyperventilate hyperventilate* then he leans in and kisses her and it's just gorgeous and hot and camera swims and he tells her he loves her and kisses her again.
I am dead.
And then we get to Episode 14, into which I am about halfway through is both the funniest and most romantic and most heart-breaking one of the bunch.
It opens with kissing! In public! And Gong-Chan telling Yu-Rin he loves her. I just love that scene. I love how tentative her hands are…it takes her a bit to move them to his arms when they start kissing and OMG, it reminds me that despite her rough and tumble life she is still such an innocent when it comes to emotions.
And then of course, on the ride back in his car, I love how happy and content, and relaxed they are. They are just happy together. He demands another version of that silly song she sang before the cheer him up and she responds ‘as if.’ But when she turns the radio on, it’s that song she was karaokeing when they were stuck in the mountains and he is even more amused. So she shows him the photo she had of him from that time on her cell and he is so adorably smug when he asks her ‘so, you marked me as your own, huh?’ ADORABLENESS. And of course she is being her usual ‘as if’ self but they both know it is totally the case and OMG.
And he asks her when she was going to give him that star she plucked (when she was drunk) as per song and she says she threw it away, but then when they get home and go to their separate rooms, she pulls it out of the drawer and sighs that it’s too shabby now and (thinking it will look better from a distance) takes a pic of it with her camera phone and he hears a buzzzzzz on his phone and ‘image loading’ icon and then he sees the pic of that star with ‘if you want it’ her text-message under it. And eeeee, the look on his face! He really looks so younger and carefree with her around.
How much do I like Jung-Woo? I mean, seriously. I’d say the boy is my kdrama bf but
uberinscrutable got there first. I love the scene where he is drinking in a bar and telling bar-tender that it’s OK. He gave Yu-Rin everything he had (so I guess at least he tried his best, hmmm) so now he will give her the only thing he has left: he will let her go. He will make it OK for both Gong-Chan and Yu-Rin. So the bar-tender asks him ‘but if you give everything, what will you have left’ and JW half-smiles and responds ‘I’ll just be light as a feather and soar.’
So in the next scene, JW invited GC to one of their squash games but then he drops the racquet and says that this is not why he called him there. And they basically have this guy-convo thing where JW says he will hit GC because of YR and that will be it. And I love how GC drops his own racquet and faces up and says ‘are you going to hit me just once?’ and JW’s response? ‘Don’t know. You are not going to be asking that once I hit you’ And he punches him out and knocks him to the floor and as GC looks up at him, mouth slightly bloodied, JW smiles and extends his hand to help Gong-Chan up. And GC is all serious and says that he is sorry. Not for Yu-Rin but for lying. And then he goes ‘that hurts!’ LOL. And then they are walking out and JW is offering to teach GC a secret of the 15-second shower.
You know, if I didn’t think Yu-Rin was so awesome, I would so slash GC/JW. Seriously. And I just love the both of them in that scene. Because JW so did what he did for GC and YR. He knows GC feels guilty, he knows he has to close the book for them to be at peace, so this way, even though he still loves Yu-Rin, he will return his friendship and make GC expiate enough for him to feel OK with himself but not enough to hurt him. And I love that he ultimately let go, and in such an awesomely grown-up way. And I love Gong-Chan for making no excuses, and letting JW hit him, and just facing the music.
You know, Gong-Chan always does that: he never shirks and he always faces up and takes responsibility. Just as earlier, when he broke up with Sae-Hyung. He told her straight out that he did not want to be with her. And later when she said she could label him as a total bastard in the papers, he told her she could do that and he will take all responsibility (even though he knew his family would kill him).
What a contrast to Sae-Hyung. I’ve gotten to hate her so much I have to hit ff button whenever I see her awful face. She is so much worse than either Hyorin in Goong or what’s-her-name in Full House. Hyorin was thoughtless, true, but she did love Shin and she really thought he’d be happier with her. She tried to kill herself later but it wasn’t to cause Shin trouble, just to get some attention. And in the end, she grew up and realized she had to move on and was actually rather helpful. And the other girl from Full House didn’t think how her behavior was affecting Young-Jae, but once again, she thought about it and realized she was messing things up and actually let him go graciously and even helped him to look for Ji-Eun. Neither of them were actively malicious to the man they professed to love.
Sae-Hyung? Oh God, please tell me someone murders her. So, the guy lets you go, fine. I am OK with her not helping him find his cousin. But to actively hide the info from him and to try to actively interfere so he’d never find her and thus have to be cousins with YR forever so he is miserable (earlier she says she wants to stay and witness his misery) is just…beyond the pale.
And then, when she sees Yu-Rin and Gong-Chan walk on the street (it’s the last snowfall and he is taking her out) and they are holding hands (OMG, when he takes her hand and she tries to withdraw it because they are near his office and someone might see but he just grabs it tighter is just…guuuuuh. And he tells her that he had better grades than JW and was the school president ROFL) and she sees them laughing and happy and she goes to see Grandpa to tell him the truth because she can’t bear them to have even a moment of happiness? I hate her. And then she basically begs grandpa to never ever ever let them get together. I hatehatehatehateHATE!
Basically, the dreadful bitch has ruined Gong-Chan’s life TWICE. She emotionally eviscerated him TWICE. That’s some sort of a feat, right there. First, two years ago when she left him without a word at the worst time of his life and now when she is taking away the new happiness he’s found. He is always so serious and duty-bound but he has so much fun with Yu-Rin. He is so amused by her antics. I love the bit in his office where she is charging him for snacks and he is laughing and his Secretary, who is awesome, comes in and sees it and you see her smile.
Yu-Rin and Gong-Chan and Jung-Woo all, ultimately, put the happiness of the person they love above theirs, however much it hurts. But Sae-Hyung? It seems love is an alien concept to her.
And so of course, poor GC and YR have no idea what storm is about to burst over their heads. GC is going crazy trying to find the granddaughter who he now knows is alive and you can see him freak out because he is terrified his reprieve will be snatched away, but thanks to evil bitch SH, info is gone and now grandpa is going to pretend he doesn’t know about the real granddaughter so as to punish GC and YR and keep them separate. I hate this whole bloody family! Your grandson did it for you. Yell at him a bit and then take him back and let him have his happiness (as the Secretary, who is I repeat made of AWESOME, told Grandpa, defending GC: ‘she makes him enormously happy.’)
I love the bit where they are in a taxi going home and he remembers the bit at the movies where Yu-Rin fell asleep and JW moved her head to his shoulder to rest, so he pats his own shoulder and then when she is uncomprehending, he sort of touches her head and moves it to his shoulder and she tries to move it a little because she is a bit puzzled but he just gently moves her head again and so she is smiling and cuddling and cozy and he tells her “I am getting a revenge of sorts.’ And then they have that dinner and I swear, he basically proposes marriage to her. ‘Director Seol’s You-Know-What’ heeeeeeeeeeeeee!
But you can tell the horrible true angst is about to hit because that symbolic snow globe just shattered and he comes in and he bandages her hand and he tells her he will buy her a new one when it snows or, since it’s not going to snow any more, he’ll just buy her one anyway. And he asks her whether she is so attached to it because he gave it to her and it’s true, not just about snow globe but the family it represents.
And OMG, that bit about him coming for her in 10 days in Jeju and her telling her she hates that expression because once her father left her in an orphanage and said he’ll be back in 10 days but parents for all the kids said that so she was terrified and then 10 days passed but he didn’t come. But then she cheerily adds ‘but he came on the 12th’ and the LOOK on GC’s face. He is just so…he just wants to take care of her and protect her and make up for all the things like that. He is a very caring protective guy to begin with, but with Yu-Rin? And it also explains why she is so guarded about her affection: she’s been uprooted and faced with loss of love (of whatever sort) for much too long. And when she tells him if he is a couple of days late it’s OK, it’s just so bad because she shouldn’t have such low expectations about someone who loves her (evil Father!) and he just tells her he will not break his promise to her. I love this thing!
