MARS: Almost done

dangermousieI have only an episode and a half of MARS left (and people breathe a sigh of relief). All the skeletons have come out of the closet and almost everything has been resolved and we have only a stabbing and a wedding (in that order) to go through.
I do like that whenever Ling does something he thinks Qi-Luo might not like or expresses his vulnerability in any way (as in 'will you stay with me' after he quits school) and she doesn't care and just loves him you always see him be a bit incredulously stunned for a second. I love that uncertainty as he doesn't take her for granted.
I am still recovering from the cuteness of their living together (doing dishes! marriage proposal while they are just sitting and talking on his bed! am dead from the cute!) in the total dump that is Ling apartment and her having to drag him out of bed each morning (I can sympathize) and making him a pink (!!!) lunchbox which he says is just his color. Of course, the home-cooked lunch is sushi and I am reminded of “their clothes don’t look like my clothes” glee that is part of the fun of foreign cinema for me.
My favorite scene of the ones watched in this batch was Ling beating the rapist stepfather into a bloody pulp as Qi-Luo just stands by and watches impassively and when the stepfather is about to be killed (because Ling really slipped his leash) and begs Qi-Luo to help him, Qi-Luo looks at him as says with no inflection in her voice whatsoever “You die.” Whoa. The only reason the guy didn’t get his head bashed in for good with a pipe was because Ling was able to pull away in the last minute, and the thought of him being the more rational one? Wooo.
Of course that leads to them holed up in a hotel freaking out about legal issues (attempted murder! assault! kidnapping! burly men who want to have sex with the cute young guy! (the last one is just my addition, hee)) and his saying they can run away and he’s always wanted to protect her and it’s killing him he can’t. And in a very gift of the magi fashion they give up what they want most for each other. She leaves while he sleeps and goes back to her abusive home in order not to get him into more legal trouble and so as to try to convince her family not to file charges and when he finds the note she left, he ends up running to his estranged uber-important father’s office completely out of his mind, almost collapsing and literally begging his father for help to get Qi-Luo out of her horrible home saying that he doesn’t care what happens to him as long as Qi-Luo is out. And when his father refuses, he doesn’t just beg, he basically submits back to his father in return for the help and tells him that if he wants him to study he will go back to school immediately, move back home right away, give up racing forever, do anything for help. And of course father takes him up and Qi-Luo is out and so Ling leaves his racing keys on his father’s desk, bows and walks out. And then he picks Qi-Luo up at the door and awwwwww. And tells her (horrible, abuse-of-daughter-tolerating) Mom that he wants to marry Qi-Luo and he will take care of her etc etc. Awww again.
And in the Gift of the Magi sort of way mark 2, when Qi-Luo finds out what Ling did for her, she goes to his father and begs him to allow Ling to do what he wants again, because after all, she is going to art grad school and Ling has made it possible to pursue her dreams and she wants him to be able to do that too. And she says that yes, she is terrified every time Ling leaves the house that he’ll get killed and she won’t see him again but she shouldn’t use his love for her as shackles and he should be free. And then we see Ling, who’s been a miserable corporate misfit have a conversation with his father and I’ve never seen anyone be so happy being fired in his life and as he walks off he throws away his suit jacket and tie (a pity, he looked HOT in a suit) and then realizes his cell phone was in his jacket pocket but before he can go back, Qi-Luo has caught up with him and says “what is it with you throwing clothes all over?” and they are both grinning because he knows she is the one that talked his father into letting him go and it’s cute and adorable and awwww.
