Guilty Pleasures Galore: MARS
Jan. 22nd, 2006 04:27 pmI've gotten my hands on a copy of Mars, which is a live-action Taiwanese version of a Japanese manga that is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine. It's a totally cheesy soap opera that I couldn't help but read from cover to cover, all 16 melodramatic, teenybopper volumes.
Plot? Kira (called Qi-Luo in the Taiwanese version) is a high school student who is almost pathologically shy and withdrawn, as a result of having been raped by her evil stepfather sometime earlier. And of course she is a psychotically talented artist. Rei (called Ling in the Taiwanese version) is the super-confident and outgoing school bad boy who is also a professional motorcycle racer (yes, indeed. This is not too much about realism).
Rei discovers he likes Kira and her art and an OTP is born as he helps Kira into gettting a spine and coming out of her shell and, of course, she saves him back in return. Because of course, his macho image is a huge facade and instead he is plagued by nightmares of his twin's death, his mother's insanity, and the fact that his father might not be his father. Oh, and there was that time spent in a mental hospital. General Hospital called and it wants the plots back.
Oh, and they move in together and there are psycho stalkers, and racing accidents, and the fact that he is really rich even if he rejects his family and I feel my arteries clog with cheese just typing it. It's horrible utter trash and yet hideously addictive. I guess all the fiction stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. I even own a bunch of the books.
So far I've watched about 2 eps and it's love at first sight. My inner 14-year old is dancing in glee. I love the scene where he finds her on the roof, wearing only pants and an undershirt because some bitchy girls were mistreating her and he just wraps his jacket around her and asks if it was because of him and then he offers her a ride home on his bike. But she doesn't hop on and he understands and tells her "yes, you can't stand men, so you can't do it, that's all right" and she just stretches her hands for the helmet and it's such a huge deal for her. Or the scene where he comes in when an evil teacher (some school this is, everyone is psycho-wannabe) is trying to molest her and she's frozen because she is having a rape flashback and he scares the guy off and then tells her that she needs to grow a spine because if she is weak people will take advantage of her. And he is so sweet and kinda sad about it. Guuh. But my favorite is the cute little scene of his casually pulling a scrunchy from her hair because he needs to borrow it (heeee. I have NEVER dated a guy who'd need that for his hair)

Them's the money shots. I couldn't find any sex scene pics anyway, so had to go with second best :P

Date: 2006-01-23 05:56 pm (UTC)My outer grown-up is mocking of all the overwrought melodrama and heated romance and the abundance of soap, but my inner and very vocal 14 year old is swooning like mad and will continue for the foreseable future. I let my 14-year old have a very free rein :P
I can't help it. I am a slave to my inner sap :P
