Plot: Hitomi, a high-school girl who has visions, ends up witnessing a strange, medieval-type guy kill a dragon. So she accidentally follows Prince Van (no, he isn't a prince of a car-park) back to the world of Gaea. She has an important role to play in some really nasty wars there.
So far I liiiiiike Van, who is all "come into my scrawny yet muscular arms, or at least I'd surely invite you if I wasn't busy being angstily hot-headed (or is it hot-headedly angsty?)."
I also like and am greatly amused by Allen who is all "come into my poofy smarmy arms of blond hotness and unsurpassed fighting skill. But be warned, I've used that line on about 300 women before, with 95% rate of success. So I'd suggest an STD check-up"
Dilandau leaves me cold because his line would probably be: "forget about coming into my homicidal evil arms. No way are you as pretty as I think myself to be, and I got my dragonslayer boys to do my whims anyway."
As to Folken? Sadly, I don't like him too much yet. The whole "I might angst but not enough to forget to elaborately style my hair" thing isn't super appealing.
I also really like Hitomi who is bright and strong and damn useful in a fight. I also like her cheeriness, though when she calls Van mopey after they end up in Allen's castle, I ROFLed because her speech goes something like this: Van, what on Gaea is the matter with you?

Date: 2006-01-10 03:57 pm (UTC)For now, if I had to pick a guy, it's between Van and Allen, more Van. I am very predictable ;p

Date: 2006-01-10 06:30 pm (UTC)But that's good. The show is built to let you pick your fave male characters, and Van IS the hero, and since I'm all into Dilandau, someone has to pick poor angsty Van. :-D
(I like Van, but in a more laid-back way.)

I just like mine batshit insane
ROFL. Dilandau seems to qualify :P
To me Van beats Allen any day!
So far, to me too. But then Allen is so competent and I have such a thing for competence that I am still undecided completely.

Date: 2006-01-10 06:35 pm (UTC)I was just remarking to Dangermousie, though, that the unconventionality of Escaflowne's character designs has a rather useful side effect: the series doesn't get half as dated as it might. With other animes, when you watch them later, you can easily tell when they were made, and sometimes the obvious "look" can be distracting/corny in retrospect/etc. Esca's weird designs continue to look equally weird, but in a good way.
