More Picspam: Kareena Kapoor
Nov. 18th, 2005 04:56 pmBringing you some Bollywood-related picspam. This time, the Bolly Beauty in question is Kareena Kapoor. I think she is quite beautiful (though not as much as Priyanka or Aishwarya) but the reason I love her is because I think she is the best mainstream Bolly actress of her generation, and one who is really good at playing strong women roles (I find her more stereotypical roles much less interesting).
So here is Kareena picspam from her various movies. It's Asoka heavy, because I think that rather Shakesperean, haunting epic is one of the best Bollywood movies I've ever seen. And Kareena as a Warrior Princess Kaurwaki, who ends up leading her people in battle, and who doesn't want to be protected but wants to learn sword play herself, is one of my all-time favorite Bolly heroines (and is very unusual for Bollywood movies, period). The fact that Asoka falls in love with her for this, and calls her "my warrior" as a pet name is...sorry, I love that movie.
Upperclass, educated, modern girl Kareena in Mani Ratnam's meditation on violence and idealism, Yuva

Enjoying the rain in Chameli:

Kareena lighting a match in the brilliant, uncertain, hopeful ending of Chameli

Grieving, loving doctor in love with a mentally disturbed patient in Kyun Ki

A young woman married to her older sister's husband in Bewafaa

Date: 2005-11-18 10:29 pm (UTC)I'm conflicted over Kareena. lol Sometimes I think she's actually pretty good, but other times she annoys me to no end. And I still haven't seen Asoka yet because after seeing them in K3G, that would just be odd.

Date: 2005-11-18 10:58 pm (UTC)The musical numbers are incredibly poetic and evocative, except Aa Tayar Ho Ja which seems out of place int the movie, though I like it anyway. And I love the make up and tattoes Kareena wears, and the costume design is superb!

Date: 2005-11-18 11:04 pm (UTC)I love Kareena's make-up in the movie. So unusual. It's one of those movies where I could just freeze-frame and stare at it for hours.
My favorite musical number is the very last one: Asoka imagining Kaurwaki. All those images of falling leaves, running water and muted colors are beautiful. Only Dil Se has more visually arresting musical numbers.
But my favorite scene is Asoka after he is told Kaurwaki is dead and he smears his face with ash, so his face is a white mask with only those incredible eyes burning through...And then that swimming shot through the grass and Asoka making what's-his-name his him again and again and staring straight ahead with those dead, frozen eyes just so he'd feel something, anything.
God, I love that movie. It's in my Top 10 movies period.

Date: 2005-11-20 05:53 pm (UTC)A movie that takes place in one night? Is Bollywood trying to make real movies or something? I saw the one where the tigers were killing everyone in a wilderness preserve (Kaal, says IMDb, since I picked the right actor to remember (Ajay Devgan)), and it looked like they were trying to attempt traditional American filmmmaking, except they really sucked at it.

Date: 2005-11-20 07:33 pm (UTC)Chameli is very good. It's basically about a depressed businessman and a tawdry low-class hooker who get stuck together (not that way) one night during the rains and the characters they come across and their own interplay. It's very good.
