I feel like a 15 year old with her first celebrity crush. Hrithik Hrithik Hrithik Hrithik Hrithik. For those of you who've friended me recently and thus don't know about my Bollywood obsession, the 'Hrithik' in question is Hrithik Roshan, a supestar of Indian movie industry known as Bollywood.

And I have just returned from his latest movie, Krrish. And oh boy! The camera fetishizes him, lovingly following his sculpted torso, touseled hair, green eyes etc etc etc and there are few actors out there who deserve to be fetishized as much as he does. Yum. Dressed in black (leather or suits), looking intense, angsty, or showing an unimaginable expanse of white teeth, Hrithik is sex on legs in this movie. Very very long, sexy legs. [livejournal.com profile] aliterati, you will enjoy.

I admit I have to eat humble pie now. I made my dislike of the idea of Krrish quite vocal. Krrish, for those who don't know, is a Bollywood take on a Superhero. Bollywood's first take on a superhero actually. Does it work? Hell yeah. I was dreading this movie: the stills looked tacky, Rakesh Roshan (the director) has made such 'classics' as Koyla, and I hate sequels and this was a sequel to the sweet, delightful (and super-hit) Koi Mil Gaya, which was an amalgamation of "E.T.," "Flowers for Algernon" and a Bolly romance about a handicapped guy given special powers by aliens (yes, aliens. It works). So yeah, my expectations were rock bottom. But the three hours flew by, and I laughed and I gasped and I even sniffled a bit (but then I sniffle easily). It was interesting to see Bollywood take such a Hollywood mainstay as a Superhero movie and make it its own: making it about family, love, revenge. I do agree with someone on Bollywhat that in a way this is really merely an expansion of the traditional Bollywood hero, who woos the girl, avenges his family, and can knock out ten guys singlehanded. But with giving Krrish actual superpowers, it's still a superhero movie.

Is it the best Bollywood movie ever made? No. It's not even the best one I've seen this year (Fanaa wins that hands down). But it's a rip-roaring good time. It's a potboiler, like all of RR movies, but what a fun giddy potboiler it is. It won't convert anyone unfamiliar with Bollywood to being a Bollywood fan, but for those of us who already like Bollywood in all its cheesy, colorful, romantic glory, this is a wonderful flick. I'll even confess to being curious about a *gasp* sequel.

It's one of the very rare Bolly movies where the second half is better than the first. I enjoyed the first half (and thought the whole ghost joke was quite funny, and I must be easy to please because the 'just imagine' catchphrase cracked me up). But the second half is where all the coolness was. Plus, Hrithik finally acquired a sexy wardrobe! In the first half, I kept hoping his grandma was going to buy him a newer shirt.

In the first half, Krishna is living with his grandmother after the deaths of his parents, Rohit and Nisha from KMG. I feel horrible for Rohit and Nisha. They were so adorable in KMG, and now I won't be able to rewatch the movie and enjoy it, knowing how it all ended up for them. The bit where Krishna finds Rohit, and Rohit's lost 20 years, and his beloved Nisha is dead etc etc etc is all quite sad. Their lives were wasted. When poor, old Rohit touches Nisha's picture...and his face breaks up...so sad.

Anyway, the highlight of the first half for me, was the fight Hrithik had with Rekha. His throwing that tantrum and railing at all her restrictions rang true to me. And I loved the scene where he rescued Priyanka in the trees. That was quite romantic: falling through the trees, his eyes intense on her, her eyes...wide in terror :D

But it's the second half where the fun was. I loved loved loved Hrithik's little martial arts dance. I don't really have good reasons why except for the fact that it looked graceful and he looked uber-sexy doing it.

I thought Kristian was quite cool and cute and was sad when he bought it.

Loved the scene where Krishna told Priya about wanting to take care of her blah blah blah. Hrithik does the playful-intense switch faster than I've ever seen, and quite well. And this movie proves yet again that Hrithik is the best dancer in Bollywood today. When he dances in that circus, wearing all black, with that big red heart...well, I must admit I swooned a bit. A lot. Take me, Hrithik, I am yours. The choreography is a bit peculiar, but I did love that circus number something fierce.

The genesis of a superhero was quite believable, at least by superhero standard (though who has a leather lining in their raincoat?) Ditto for the science which is standard superhero stuff. I am a sucker for good guys doing noble stuff, so when Hrithik went in to rescue those children, I was definitely swooning again (yes, I was swooning a lot). And of course, I loved it when he took on Dr. Arya at the end. He took a bullet for his father and I love the reunion scene (earlier, Hrithik going '20 years!' was quite moving as well). And the ninja fight was great.

As in a lot of RR movies, the whole thing centered around revenge for family. I do wonder what on earth goes through RR's mind. Hmmm. The effects were good and the fights too (a lot of wirework). I've read somewhere that Hrithik did all his own stunts, and if so, my hat's off to him.

I loved the romance, especially when it switched to Singapore. It has teasing, and betrayal, and Hrithik beating up bad guys to get her ring back, and Hrithik does heart-broken really really well. Not surprising Priya fell for him.

Nasser Shah had fun with the role, but it was quite a small one. Priyanka was good (I loved that her character wasn't just some moody eyed girl but a woman with a twist) and had good chemistry with Hrithik, but the whole movie was Hrithik's show (not a surprise with RR) and a good job he did of it. It's a bit disturbing that he looks his best in his father's movies, but hey, as a girly fangirl, I'll take what I can get.
