dangermousie: (Dr Who by panpipe)

The weather was really really really nice this weekend, and yours truly got a lot of walking in.

Also, we went to see RSC's version of Canterbury Tales at the Kennedy Center and it was glorious and funny and bawdy.

Also saw Ice Age 2, which was OK but forgettable except for the glorious apotheosis of the squirrel and the vultures' Busby Berkley number, which were worth the price of admission.

Also saw the Doctor Who episode "Dalek" which was the best one so far. I still can't find Daleks frightening, because this thing looks like an offspring of a trashcan and a vacuum and has an evil plunger (Bless the BBC of old and their tiny budget). But CE sold me on its horror through sheer reaction to it: revulsion that isn't reasoning. And I ended up feeling pity for it. And of course, the question of it not being something you can reason with it is something else.

And we finally find out what happened to the Time Lords. It looks like a side effect of whatever the Doctor did to wipe out the Daleks, killed all of his race. I think the Doctor is wondering around all shell-shocked and borderline insane ever since.

On the Doctor/Rose front, I loved how he did bring the wall down, even though she was trapped inside. And how she told him she didn't blame him and she wouldn't have changed those last months for the world. And then the look on his face! And his "she was 19!" And of course, Dalek referred to her as "the woman you love." Yay. And I love even more that when it turned out she was alive, he let her (and the Dalek) out because "I could not kill her again." Whoa.

I also liked the touch of humanity in Dalek and touch of Dalekness in the Doctor. Daleks invoke such darkness in him. No wonder the Dalek tells him 'you could have been a Dalek.'

I am a bit confused as to how the assistant chick ended up running the joint though? Why did the underlings listen to her?

And the torture scene was wimpy. Come on, guys. Watch some Farscape and learn how it's done.

You've hit the nail on the head about how this Doctor is completely different from the rest.

It's hugely spoilery, but you may want to read this analysis of the Doctor/Rose relationship that I wrote ages ago, sort of in response to an old-timer friend of mine.

That was a great analysis (at least the part of it I read. I stopped so as not to spoil myself). Yes, it's his loneliness that has no hope of alleviation that makes him more receptive to Rose.

Daleks are awesome. Beware the little plungers of DOOM!

I love my PTSD Doctor. He hits my kinks hard. Gah.

I like you analysis of the Dr. Who Epsiode, after seeing the episode last Friday and reading your analysis today some things in the episode make a lot more sense.

Thank you. *blushes*

I really like the show so far. It's cheesy but the characters are cool.

I think thats the point, with out the cheese factor it wouldn't be Dr. Who. I remeber the old Dr. Who, theer was no other show that did such interesting SciFi on such a small budget.

Daleks are scary! I think it must be childhood fears of plungers or something which makes them seem so terrifying. You can't trust plungers! They're out to get us!

Heeee. But plungers are useful! The fact that a demented scientist would make plungers evil just makes me happy.

But their stategy is to lie around looking all useful and then they leap up and put their nefarious plan into action.

I just watched it! And you are so right on the trash-can bit. Actually, for the longest time I didn't want to watch the show becaue the Daleks were the lamest looking villains ever.
My favorite line? "You make a good Dalek." Seriously creepy. I thought it was going to kidnap the Doctor or something.
