The Joys of Miaka

dangermousieI've embarked on a rewatch of Fushigi Yuugi, and what do you know, I still love it.
I am about to express not the most popular opinion but I adore Miaka. True, she is not the brightest bulb ever created but she has a certain cheerful oblivious singlemindedness that makes her very effective. The girl is a battle-axe and she takes on situations head on and isn't afraid. Partly it's because of the above mentioned singlemindedness, partly because Miaka strikes me as eternal optimist, and partly because she is not overly imaginative (Yui strikes me as high strung, Miaka not at all).What she lacks in intelligence she makes up in grit. Yui, who is clearly brighter, is also a lot weaker as a person. But Miaka?
What I love about the girl is that she doesn't do the helpless damsel in distress. True, she yells for Tamahome a lot (understandably so, the boy is crazily effective), but she always tries to fight by herself first, no matter how outclassed she is. Even before the girls meet Tamahome, when slavers get them, Yui yells and Miaka? Miaka attacks, no matter how outclassed she is. And the same with the street gang which was going to rape her.
I think her relative unimaginativeness and single-mindedness and cheerful disposition also make her a lot more accepting of oddness. When Tamahome asks the girls for money after the rescue? Yui is indignant but Miaka simply roots around in her purse to pay the guy. She is very adaptable.
Oh and Tamahome? If he wasn't drawn (and very very taken), I'd so jump his bones.
