Because I can’t watch RahXephon without Husband who wants to see it as well, I started watching Pretear, which someone on f-list recommended. I can’t remember who it was, but thank you, because I am two episodes in and I am having a hilarious, great time. No, Trigun is safe as my favorite anime. And Fushigi Yuugi is still my favorite shoujo anime. But Pretear is delicious, giggly fun, though not necessarily in the way TPTB intended.

The concept has been designed by pervs. Or people on crack. Or pervs on crack. The good kind. Freud could spend happy months analyzing the set-up. Leafe Knights protect “leafe” (aka life force of all beings). Now there is Princess of Disaster who is trying to destroy all leafe and end the world. Leafe Knights (“leafe” makes them sound like pretentious California yuppies) are strong but they can’t win without a girl knight, a Chosen One (down, Buffy!) This teenage girl (whose title is Pretear) fights the bad eco monsters by ‘preting’ with her Leafe Knights (all male, ranging from grown-up hotties to children and one borderline toddler). What is ‘preting?’ Well, here is where the fun is. To fight, Pretear and a Knight become one. Yes. Indeed. And in a Karmic way, this happened right after I told Husband, this is the one anime I could see showing kids. No, it turns out, it was't. Oh boy, how it wasn't.

Now, sit tight as I run through all the phallicness of the process: the girl and the guy hold hands and all of a sudden they are in an alternate dimension. Both stark naked (throw in some orgasmic looks on girl’s face). They get closer and closer and as the guy’s body touches the girl’s he disappears in a burst. White burst. Yup. The girl ends up being enveloped by something that looks like a placenta but we won’t go into that. Do you think that’s it? Think again. When Himeno (the story’s Pretear) asks Hayate (the first knight she ‘prets’ with), where he is, he says “inside you.” And then he tells her to use a weapon (he is a knight with the wind power), she reaches to the glowing ball of energy that forms between her legs and voila, she has a giant sword. At this point, my eyes are bugging out of my head (and she finally gets an outfit), just in time for me to ignore some last minute back-pedaling in the form of Hayate saying this isn’t physical. Yes. And I believe in Santa Claus too.

The most hilarious or disturbing (depending on your perspective) thing about this is that while four of the Leafe Knights are adults, three are kids. It’s all fun and games when this procedure happens with Hayate or Sasame who are both hot and grown up, but when, after one of Himeno’s pretings, the kids are all ‘pret with me next, Himeno” I just…

Seriously, where did the writers get the crack?

Leaving aside the bizarreness of the premise of the fight (save the eco-system through teen orgasms???) I actually enjoy this. Himeno is a cool heroine. She is spunky, and fun, and active. She is also a bit bossy. And thankfully, her reaction to seven strange people showing up in her garden and telling her she is something called Pretear is to tell them she isn’t dumb enough to fall for a stupid gag. And I like some of the Leafe Knights a lot. Hayate is hot and grumpy. He is the one who discovers Himeno is Pretear, and he is the one who doesn’t want her to be involved. I am sure Hayate and Himeno are the OTP for this show, since they fight all the time, while at the same time, he becomes her shield and takes the wounds she would have had on himself and she thinks he is uber-hot. Girls like a challenge, I guess. I also like Sasame, the blond, uber-hot Knight, who is as kind and understanding as Hayate is brusque and walled-off. Though if there is any love triangle (not yet, but who knows), he will definitely lose as it seems in anime, if you met the girl first, she will like you (if you are a. grown up b. hot and c. not evil) and Hayate and Himeno met first.

The artwork is beautiful. I love the characters. The humor is spot on. The premise, even if it’s insane, amuses me by that very fact. And I already have an OTP. What’s not to like?

And this is only 13 eps which is great. Of course, this whole thing is making me wonder about the knights. I know they are from another dimension, but how are they created. Do they have any families? What do the parents of the youngest think, letting their kids wander around with random young men who sic them on teen girls? Hmmmm

Himeno handles Hayate’s giant sword. Ahem:

OTP!

The Heroine. With Pink Snow. Even the weather color-coordinates in this world:

Hayate. He is like a Fushigi Yuugi escapee. Tamahome attitude and Hotohori hair. I have yet to see a bad in this. But let me examine him closer. Much closer:

Sasame, Himeno and Hayate. Buffy never had it this good with her being Chosen:

Yup, true love no doubt:

Sasame. So blond and elegant he makes fanon Draco weep tears of envy:

Especially since he has sexy earrings and no pesky Potter to take all the glory:

Pretty, pretty angst:

“If I were any prettier, I’d fall in love with me myself:”

“I am pretty therefore I angst:”

The five Leafe Knights who aren’t bishounen and thus don’t get angst, OTPs, or in-depth characters. Ahhhh, to be beautiful is mandatory if you want to get ahead in life, in anime as much as in high school, it seems:

Sasame and Himeno color-coordinate:

Where is his hand, precisely?????

The girl and her harem:

Oooooh. Oooooh OTP with the kissing. Spoilery, I guess, but come on, if you couldn’t figure out they were the OTP from the first ep, you have had too much preting lately and it sucked out your brain:

The characters and their wardrobe:

Oh LAWDY. Pretear. I stopped trying to make sense out of that bad boy about half way through and was just like "whatever, yeah, she saves the world through sex". The whole thing is actually based on Snow White (which explains why Hayate has to kiss her in the end). First transformation= me laughing my head off. [livejournal.com profile] randirien and I were giggling about that not too long ago. Not that I'd complain about having hotties at my beck and call. Kai and Go are actually both bishies in the manga too (if you notice the 'harem' picture, both Go and Kai are also drawn hot), so she's got 4, if we're going for the boys who are actually legal. Disturbingly enough she also prets with two of the younger ones. I actually prefer the manga to the anime simply because I don't have to watch the disturbing transformation scene.

Anyway, Sasame is not what he seems. I like both him and Hayate a lot though, Hayate mainly because he's brusque and snippy for a reason and in spite of his reason you can still see why Himeno likes him and that he likes her too (none of this "omg I'm suddenly in love with you even though I've hated you all along").

"whatever, yeah, she saves the world through sex".

'Make love not war' becomes frighteningly literal. I still maintain this was designed by former flower children who had too many LSD trips. Of course since I like it, it says a few worrying things about me.

First transformation= me laughing my head off

I was laughing so hard (while also being busy picking my jaw from the floor) that it actually attracted attention of Husband who came over and we watched the rest in stunned wonder. There has been anime which struck me dumb because of sheer angst, or beauty, or romance, but this was the first one that achieved that through sheer "they did not just do what I think they did? Did they? Did THEY? They diiiiiiid! ROTFL" levels.

which explains why Hayate has to kiss her in the end

Well, that and he likes her :P

Kai and Go are actually both bishies in the manga too (if you notice the 'harem' picture, both Go and Kai are also drawn hot), so she's got 4, if we're going for the boys who are actually legal.

The one who looks and dresses like a girl puzzles me a bit. All I got to say is that Himeno's harem and activities make Miaka seem a virgin, unloved and unnototiced Nun.

Disturbingly enough she also prets with two of the younger ones.

Must Scrub Brain Now.

Hayate mainly because he's brusque and snippy for a reason and in spite of his reason you can still see why Himeno likes him and that he likes her too (none of this "omg I'm suddenly in love with you even though I've hated you all along")

Hayate and Himeno have good character chemistry which is just too much fun. I have to admit, anime seems to be a lot better than a lot of other media about fleshing out relationships or showing why characters actually like each other and match. It's like anti-Bollywood that way (I adore Bollywood, but it's a shrine to Love at First Sight, which gives it a fairy-tale like quality but removes it from reality a bit).

Sasame is not what he seems.

As long as he doesn't turn actually hideous, I'm OK.

And I love all your pretty MeruPuri icons. Especially the Jeile one.

My reaction was "I think I just watched metaphysical SMUT!"

Kai is...entertaining. And the Nuriko of the series, only more serious. And more vain.

I do appreciate the romances in anime since they tend to makes sense. It's not two people thrown together because we need a couple or because they look pretty, it's an OTP because there's a reason for it (one of my favorite OTPs, Duero/Parfait from Vandread, just look completely wrong together, but their personalities make them a perfect couple).

As long as he doesn't turn actually hideous

No no. He goes nice and sexy evil. Get's a bizarre but hot black fur trimmed coat and wreaks havoc. Yessssss...Sasame is dead sexy when he wants to be. I personally never could figure out why Hayate wore the ponytail holder at the END of his hair either. Ah well.

Especially the Jeile one.

While I love Aram/Airi, Jeile still has my heart with his vain, frivolous, bumbling but sweet and honorable nature.

I.e. something Kant would buy at the corner pr0n store? LOL.

It's possible to be more vain than Nuriko? I think my brain cells have just all fused together.

I like that. All the OTPs I've seen so far, however screwed up (you don't get much more screwed up than Shishio/Yumi in Kenshin) actually work. It's really refreshing.

He goes nice and sexy evil. Get's a bizarre but hot black fur trimmed coat and wreaks havoc

Ahhhhh. That made my day. Sexy evil in manner of Anakin is good. As long as he is effective and angsty. Mmmmmm. Now fanon Draco will really be jealous.

I personally never could figure out why Hayate wore the ponytail holder at the END of his hair either.

It seems about the least effective way to contain your hair possible. Let's just hope he uses strong hair gel and thus keeps it in place. How does it not get in his face during battle anyway? I keep wondering about all anime bishies. Half of them shouldn't even be able to see with hair like theirs!

He goes evil for a woman, so I'm very inclined to forgive him. I want a Sasame-type man (if I can't find a Shido-type one).

Ohhhh, evil for a woman, definitely Anakin like. *Sigh* I think Sasame just became even hotter. Mmmmm.

I would want Vash. Only with more earning power.

I like Sasame and Shido because they are sweet, devoted guys who rarely bicker with their women and have relatively few issues. They're the type you'd want in real life. Vash is a bit too naive and sunny for me. I'd want to slap him after a while.

I ended up thinking who is Husband most similar to, and I decided some bizarre mix of Aoshi and Vash is the closest (though not very close). Which would explain why I like the characters.

I think Vash is determinedly naive and will hold on to it by the skin of his teeth no matter what. I find it incredibly endearing. Hmmmm. Maybe Hotohori but he does have the nobility streak that would lead to him being killed, like as not. None of animales make good partners, now that I think about it.

That Vash icon makes me giggle every time I see it.

Sasame and Shido are actually bad choices too since they're both very, very taken. For obvious reasons though. Bishies like that just get snapped right up.

My favorite unattached bishie? Kakashi. He's very very Hiko-like and long suffering with is rowdy pack of ninja trainees, has a sense of humor, is handsome, has issues but is functional in spite of them and could kill you with a rubber band and a piece of used chewing gum. Yagami is starting to give him a run for his money in the love department though. Interestingly they're both dub voiced by the same guy, who sounds awful on both of them.

I know Kakashi is from Naruto. Where is Yagami from?

And thanks for the icon link!

Yagami is from Mars Daybreak. I think I'm partial to a bish in glasses.

Hee. You're welcome, I think. XD It makes me want to watch the first few episodes again--it was fun during the first half, and I liked it a lot. n.n --although I completely didn't pick up on the phallicness of it all, I'm shamed to admit. The whole thing with 'I'm /inside/ you! ... erm. yes.' part, yes, but pulling weapons from between her legs? Then again, this was years ago that I saw it. ~_~

Thank you! I thought it was you but I wasn't sure and was too lazy to go back and to check all the anime posts to see.

but pulling weapons from between her legs

It took a bit for my brain to catch up with my eyes, but when I did, I nearly fell off the sofa!

Welcome to Magical Girl imagery.

This may do it in the most obvious way, but naked sexual transformation sequences?

Stock and trade. :-P

At this rate, you might not even have to watch Sailor Moon!

Hmmmm. I think I shall survive Moonless. But yes, I know about transformation scenes nudity. But this was nudity+explicit sex stuff. That was...different. If by 'different' one means 'created by insane monkeys who've been peanut-deprived'

Lol, my friends got the wrong idea with the "preting" part, but I didn't. It wasn't disturbing at all, I went along with Hayate and said that it's not what you think it is. There's a bright white light in between them, so I doubt they could see anything and she's not pulling the light from her... y'know, it's out in front of her.. So it's nothing wrong to think, unless someone has a wrong mind. I prefer the anime over the manga anytime. I could actually understand the process in the anime, because it doesn't go all over like the manga. Even though it's a good anime, it's still not good to show to kids. I don't think any parent would want their kid to learn about cussing and all that; that's why they rated it the way they did. I enjoyed it a lot.. now I have an obsession with Himeno and Hayate being the OPT.
