Yes, yes, I am still carping on Fushigi Yuugi. I can’t help it, my brain is still deliciously scrambled by it.
Tamahome and Miaka find out about the OVAs. "Dammit, we just want to live quietly and happily ever after. Find another couple to torment:"

I have decided I won’t watch the OVA. For one, they have decidedly mixed reviews from FY fans. For another, my experience with OVAs generally so far hasn’t been good. I haven’t cared for them.
Also, apparently they mess with some basic world-building rules of the FY world. And do things like having Tasuki develop a thing for Miaka which he never had in the show (the most he had at the end of the series was liking her as a person despite his general distaste for women, which I am totally fine with). I prefer to think of him happy living on his mountain with his bandit OTP Koji. And they also have Hotohori and Nuriko reincarnated in some odd fashion. And make Tamahome mopey (come on, the guy was a lot of things, but never mopey). So it doesn’t like something I’ll enjoy, character-wise.
Much more importantly (to me), the show ended and concluded everything. I was very happy with the ending, but even more than that, FY series had one story, one arc and it concluded: the drive of the story was for Miaka and Tamahome to find a way to coexist in the same world, for the good guys to save their world and for Miaka to summon Suzuku and reconcile with Yui and for Suzuku 7 to defeat Nakago. All of these have been accomplished by the end. So the thought of it just stringing it for no good reason out is ridiculous and seems redundant and unnecessary. And come on, I am sure they will have more Miaka/Tamahome angst and past a certain point you just want to say “enough.” I mean, I loved the angst in the show but the story is over, they got their HEA so just to keep restarting the cycle is…not needed.
BUT BUT BUT. Can someone please please reassure this pathetic fangirl that at the end of the last OVA (Eikoden) Miaka and Tamahome live happily ever after? That they don’t die or something. Please? I am deathly afraid :)
Also, here my Top Dozen moments from the show
1 Tamahome killing Nakago and at that moment, both he and the audience see what made Nakago what he was. And Nakago telling Tamahome “you shouldn’t see into the hearts of others.” And Tamahome standing there, quietly crying for his nemesis.
2 Hotohori’s death in battle: drawing his sword even though it’s hopeless, and charging against Nakago. And then lying there, not wanting to die before he sees the face of his unborn child. And Miaka reading it in the book and crying helplessly, repeating “You promised me you wouldn’t die. Liar, liar, liar, liar.” Just thinking about it makes me mist up.
3 Hotohori and Tamahome fight to the death. Hotohori unsheathing his sword and throwing another one to Tamahome. And Tamahome trying to kill Miaka (under the influence of the spell) even as he is dying and she putting the sword into his hand.
4 Nuriko’s desperate last battle. And the rest of Suzaku 7 going into shock seeing his broken body in the snow.
5 Miaka after she believes she’s been raped, falling apart and telling Tamahome that she’s deserved what she got and that she is all unpure and disgusting. And Tamahome asking her to show him her body and once she does, he looks at her and tells her quietly that she is beautiful and she is still pure. Nothing has changed and he wants to marry her and he will never leave her.
6 Tasuki and Chichiri appearing out of the book to protect the ‘real’ world from Nakago’s rampage and bantering with each other. God, so much love.
7 Tamahome finding the bodies of his family in their house. And holding his dying sister in his arms, and finding his little brother still clutching a knife. And just standing there taking punishment from Suboshi who’s killed them because he wants to experience the same pain and then snapping and going super-nuclear in his rage.
8 Miaka telling Hotohori she likes him but doesn’t love him. And Hotohori hugging her and telling her that since she will save his country, “this unworthy person” will still love her. And you get flashbacks to child Hotohori hoping that the Priestess he had heard of will save him from loneliness.
9 Tamahome finding Miaka unconscious, clothes ripped, in Nakago’s tent, right after Nakago told him what he’d done.
10 The very end. Miaka seeing Tamahome who holds up his hand with the wedding ring and says "I've found you" as her hands (one of which is also wearing the wedding ring) go to her mouth.
11. After Chichiri spirited away Tasuki and Miaka, Tamahome, still under Nakago’s spell stands stock-still and the only thing you see moving are tears coursing down his face and he says wonderingly, flatly “I am crying.” And he doesn’t know why.
12. Tatara of the Byakko 7 dying in the Universe of the Four Gods at the same time as Suzuno, Priestess of Byakko in the Real World. And his ghost, in that gorgeous armor, with long hair, coming for her. And Suzuno's ghost runs out of the house, young again. And she runs into his arms, hair flying.
12. I lied. I couldn't fit it all in. Tamahome and Miaka exchanging wedding rings. And prior to this, as he is about to leave her world, her clinging to him as at last, he can't help himself and his arms go around her.
Yes, it seems all the moments I picked were depressing. No idea why (except no. 6 and 12, but even these ones aren't chirpy).
