dangermousie: (FY: Hotohori life sweet by seiran_icons)

My apologies for the crazy amounts of FY spam this weekend. I know most people on my flist don't even know what it is :) But I promise to be done soon.

The paramount reason I adore Fushigi Yuugi is that even in the midst of heavy-duty melodrama and angst and plot, you have surreally wonderful moments like the hero (in this case, Tamahome) interrupting the villain's gloating/threatening speech to point out the villain's tacky fashion choices. Or, when during a later confrontation Tamahome defeats the villain and smugly points out that he doesn't just take punishment, referring to FY's psychotic levels of Tamahome angst. Love.

Am glad to see Amiboshi alive and nice and pacifist and cool. Love the boy. A pity all the niceness seems to have gone into one brother. Also am equally glad to find out that Nakago didn't rape Miaka when push came to shove ('sex with unconscious women holds no interest to me.') He's vile but I am glad to see there are some lines he didn't cross. And oooooh, Soi was jealous. She and Nakago really interest me, relationship-wise.

But my favorite scene in the series so far is, hands down, the scene with Miaka and Tamahome after she tells him she can't marry him (when they both think she's been raped). She tells him that she isn't worthy of him and it's all her fault and she was being an idiot so she reaped what she had sown. And she tells him that she went to Nakago with intention of having sex to get that amulet thingy back. And she isn't worthy and horrible and polluted. And he just comes to her and he hugs her and then he asks her, very quietly, to see her body and when the robe is around her feet he looks at her and he says "You are beautiful. Nothing has changed since the purification ritual. You are still pure." And he tells her he loves her and he'd promised he'd make her his bride and make her happy and he will. And he will never leave her. Guuuuuuh. I can see why [livejournal.com profile] dawntreader717 got a thing for Tamahome. Of course, Miaka, who is understandably still screwed up in the head (and keeps having Nakago flashbacks) leaves anyway. And we get more angst and then a reunion (by which point she has found out about not being raped and tells him, yesssss and they are so quietly glad!) and more angst.

Of course, there is the cool bit where the evil Seriyu illusionist (who is yet another 'not interested in women' character. He says he doesn't usually like having sex with women as partners, heee) makes Tamahome (who is searching for Miaka) believe Soi is Miaka and they almost make love but then Tamahome stops because he says that there is still a chance and making love would be giving up all hope (the priestess has to be a virgin to be able to summon the God) and awwww.

I do like the neat parallel that Tamahome's love for Miaka helped to break Nakago's spell on him and Miaka's love for Tamahome helped her break the illusionist's spell on her.

Now I get upset every time I see Nuriko in the credits because I miss him, dammit. I think it's interesting that in the impact of the deaths in this show, the audience (or at least I) is rather in Miaka's shoes. The deaths of Tamahome's family was horrible and upsetting, but a large chunk of the impact came from the fact that these were kids and a sick old man and from the impact it had on Tamahome. Because just like for Miaka, we met them and liked them but they were secondary characters. But the death of Nuriko is quite different because he was one of Miaka's closest friends but for the audience he was one of the main characters and I got to know and really really got attached to him, so the impact of his death (as opposed to external factors like impact of his death on others etc) is so much greater.

I miss Hotohori! I know he had to stay back and rule the empire and we get really short little flashbacks to him now and then, but I want more. I want my Hotohori fix, dammit!

Also, the animators really love to draw nudity or near nudity. Good on them. Heeeee. So not for children.

ETA: Argh, Amiboshi just died. Seriously, why do they keep killing off characters I like? Couldn't they kill the uber-horrid Suboshi instead?

ETA2: Oooooh, Amiboshi isn't dead after all. And he can live peacefully in that village. Yay!

ETA 3: OK, in the never-ending angst of M/T, he now kissed her in the woods (French Kissing, yaaaaaay! First time too. Poor Tamahome. He must be SO frustrated :P) and then told her this is the last time and he can't love her any more and walked off. Why? I am sure to find out shortly, but Good God people, leave some angst for the rest of the world :)

ETA 4: Aha. It's because his wise old master told him to do it because their love can never be consumated (how Buffy and Angel of them) and this is their destiny (and then, he told him not to lean on the railing or he'll fall over ROFL). Uh-oh, I am getting a bad feeling about the prospects for my OTP. Argh, don't tell me they'll get eternally separated or Tamahome will die or whatever. Argh. This thing is going to give me a heart attack.

ETA5: Love Nakago. For one, he seriously has a huge Tamahome fixation. Soi should be jealous of that and not of Yui, who is someone he is merely using. I mean, there is this trap and Nakago is all "We have the Priestess so the Suzaku 7 will come. [pause] Tamahome will come." And the tone of voice? Seriously, that is twisted. I do love his comment when he sees Miaka again "You just have no capacity for learning." ROFL.

ETA6: I love Miaka cooking so badly (as a way to sort of win him back after his 'we can't be together' rift) and Tamahome saying even pigs get better food. And Miaka storms out so Tamahome just glares at the rest of the Suzaku 7 and barks "give me all the food Miaka cooked" and starts just shovelling it in grimly, eating every last bit even though he is kinda turning purple. Love. Also love that he, for a moment, gives to temptation and since he can't have Miaka, considers having sex with that other willing girl. How human. And then Miaka interrupts. And later he decides that even if they can never be together (because apparently the Priestess can't stay in this world after she is done), it doesn't matter, it's too late for him and he loves her anyway.

ETA7: Byakko 7 were hot. Also, Tatara/Suzuno (who I guess went through the Tamahome/Miaka thing 90 years ago) are totally OTP. And I am so sappy but I loved that even in different worlds, they died at the same time, and then you see his ghost, still young as he was under the spell, come to her and she comes out of the Japanese house, young again and he holds her. I am such a freaking sap.

ETA8: They killed Chiriko! Not even cute little kids are sacred. Oh well, better him than someone I like better. Though still...awwww.

ETA9: Nakago KISSED Tamahome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *is ded* While telling him that Miaka's lips were so soft and why "don't I show you how I kissed her." That is so twisted I have noooo words for it. Seriously. I screamed. Canon uber-twisted slash s&m pairing? OMG. Love. I think Tamahome is going to brush his teeth until they fall out and floss until his gums bleed. Eeeee. I never thought they were going to make the predatory sexual nature of Nakago's obsession with tormenting Tamahome so explicit. Eeeee. But they did!
