Wow. I've gotten to the part where I felt uncomfortable watching Fushigi Yuugi. Because the scene where Miaka gets raped by Nakago? I really couldn't watch that. It's horrible, with his stripping her clothes off remotely, and his 'I can't imagine you'd be much fun' and her bridal necklace made by Tamahome's sister tearing, and the really sick fact that a huge chunk of this for Nakago seems to be his Tamahome's fixation as he says something to the effect of wanting to see the look "on that boy's face when he finds out I'd raped the one he loves" or something to that effect. And Miaka's horror and helplessness. Ugh. Seriously, this thing is maxing out my angstiness levels.

And then of course Tamahome getting there too late and his confrontation with Nakago (where Nakago manages to draw blood with every word. He starts the interaction by saying "You look well, for a man who's just lost his family and a close friend"), the way Tamahome doesn't realize what has happened until Nakago goes something like "Your gf is inside. She has such nice skin. And I thought of her as a child but her body is a woman's" and you see Tamahome fall apart in front of your eyes. Seriously, one of the most twisted things about this is how hurting Miaka is for Nakago largely a path to breaking Tamahome. His fixation on Tamahome is...beyond creepy.

And then Tamahome goes into that blinding, super-powered rage we only saw once before when he discovered the bodies of his family but Nakago gets away anyway and then Tamahome runs into the yurt and sees Miaka, unconscious, bruised, clothes torn just lying on the floor. And I love the beautiful image of the beads of bridal necklace (made by his sister) that he holds in his hand slowly slip and hit the floor and scatter. And she opens her eyes and they look at each other and they are both just destroyed and there is nothing to say and it's horrible. Seriously, FY, stop maxing out my angst tolerance.

And the next thing we see is they are travelling on his horse and she looks a destroyed wreck and he talks about everything but about what's happened and she doesn't even have any appetite (!!!) and then as he is fishing, she jumps into the river and when he asks her what she is doing, she tells him that if she washes enough maybe she'll be pure again and she starts scrubbing her skin until it bleeds and he is just at this complete horrified loss, and he wants to help her but he doesn't know how and the helplessness in the face of her suffering is killing him. And then she tells him, by the fire, she can't marry him.

Miaka's sudden loss of vivacity and life force is just shocking. And just the whole lack of interest in appearance and incessant desire to clean and her uncofortableness with touching Tamahome is just...too real for comfort. She has just shattered basically, and it's awful. But, unlike Yui, she doesn't turn evil. So there. But watching her trauma feels too...uncomfortable, really.

Seriously, talk about angst. Miaka/Tamahome is like the motherload.

Oh, and Yui and Suboshi should definitely get together. They are both whiny, ineffective and evil.
