Yet more Fushigi Yuugi
Feb. 11th, 2006 12:56 amThis anime has the prettiest animation. I love some of the images. Like when Miaka meets Tamahome (who is evil) and she shows him the letter he wrote to her, where he told her he loved her. And he reads it and goes, wonderingly "I wrote that?" and she looks briefly hopeful and then you see him slowly tear the paper in two. And as he tears you see her face appear through the tear and the you see it zoom in and so you can just see her eyes through the gap and then her irises. And then there is an image of Miaka herself, being a sheet of paper, torn. Or the image of Tamahome at the end, still under the spell, standing stock-still with Nakago and Yui, and the only thing that moves are tears pouring down his face as he wonderingly says "How odd. I am crying." Very pretty. And angsty.
Seriously, they love to pile angst on this OTP with a trowel. After a physical (he broke her arm!) and emotional betrayal and cruelty like that, it would be kinda hard to mend fences. Or deal with it. How very Buffy and Angelus. And just like Angelus, evil!Tamahome is still fixated on his OTP, only now homicidally. And he was fighting so hard against it, too (I love the bit where he is overcome by the incense thingy and Yui puts the potion thing in her mouth and leans in to kiss him and he tries hard to evade her and is thinking of Miaka and then his eyes close and he slumps). This show is good at bringing the angst. And Miaka realizing she can't get him back at the end. Aaaangst. I don't care who knows it, Miaka/Tamahome-another OTP for
dangermousie
And I am seriously beginning to wonder about S2 of Buffy because just like in it, Tamahome is pierced with a sword (and oh my, the climactic fight between him and Hotohori is just great and dramatic and everything) and then he recovers his soul and he doesn't remember anything. The scene where he is dying from his wound and Miaka just cradles him and even as he is dying he tries to grab his sword to stab her and she actually helps him to it and tells him he can kill her if only he'd live? Sappy, over the top, and just right for yours truly. And of course, the fact that he is dying and the strong mutual love they have finally snaps him out of the spell.
I love that Miaka is so forgiving. And that Tamahome, isn't though he remembers anything, feels so bad. And then there is kissing on the veranda and it's adorable. And I love when he finds her in the stream to give her her ribbon back, and he says he doesn't remember how he ended up with it, but he thought she'd be missing it, and it's the ribbon he sliced off her when he was evil and even then he carried it around. Awwww. Of course, we know he is back to normal because he is in his room, staying up all night, counting money. :P
Also, I love Tasuki and his temper. And the gaudy jewelry. My threesome is might even in turn into a foursome though not yet :P
I love the bit where Hotohori rescues Miaka from her watery grave and he is concerned and angsty and WET and super-noble. I love Hotohori, period. Especially with his hair down. And then she throws herself into his arms in gratitude and he looks so unbelievingly pleased. And he tells her he will always stay with her. *sniff* And then he tries to make out with her (way to go, it's way too soon!) and stops when she asks immediately. I think he is just overcome by his feelings and can't control them.
And when he fights Tamahome to the death to protect Miaka? So hot. So unbelievably hot. And he is so good at stepping out of the way of M/T, I just...guuuuuh. And then Miaka apologizes to him, crying because she likes him but cannot love him (and I think it's good that she feels bad because it's not as if she can or wants to stop loving Tamahome, but she is causing pain to someone who's been extremely good to her). And he tells her it's OK and tries to (very badly) cover his desolation by saying that his Prime Minister has been after him to take a wife and it just made him think that way too. And then when she starts crying because it's so clear it's a lie, he tells her that it's OK because she will save his country and it's OK and he just hugs her really tightly and asks her that she not mind if this 'unworthy person' love her. And he keeps holding her and telling her he loves her and it's so freaking sad, especially since we get little flashbacks to lonely child Hotohori being told of the legend about the Priestess and thinking that surely, that girl would be able to love him and see past him being a future emperor and see a person and cure his loneliness. Now I know why
crumpeteer has a color bar that says "Hotohori is noble love" Eeeeeee. Please, TPTB, let the guy have some happiness at least for a bit, OK?
Btw, we can also now increase the count of times Hotohori has seen Miaka's breasts to two. Tamahome is still ahead.
Oh, and Nakago is still horribly evil (and whip-obsessed) but not even he deserves to have to deal with the mopey teenager Yui on a regular basis (surely the most annoying character in existence). I mean, he is an evil genius, not a babysitter.
