dangermousieI started watching Fushigi Yuugi, an anime about a girl who gets sucked into a book and lands in Ancient China where she finds out her destiny is to summon celestial warriors and fight evil. And get an OTP, of course.
I saw about 5 episodes and enjoyed some of it quite well, but don't have much of an interest in continuing (though knowing me, I probably will. Heck, I'll probably finish HYD at some point, too). A pity they couldn't combine the Hana Yori Dango story and Fushigi Yuugi artwork.
Scattered thoughts follow.
I really love the theme song. Though in one credit shot, are Miaka and Tamahome nekkid? Startlingly, the subtitle for that is "open yourself to eternity." Hmmmm. But good on them. When I was 15, I was still getting past the idea that boys have cooties.
Five episodes in, Miaka is kinda annoying. I think I would like her a lot better if I was the target audience (a 14 year old girl, I imagine). Well, if I am charitable, I'd say she is cheerful and tries to fight and is funny sometimes, even if she is immature, shallow and dumb as a brick (But hey, she's 15). Her obsession with food I actually find amusing. At least she is not a mopey dope like OVA-Hitomi (I like the series Hitomi). Not the best heroine, but I don't hate her. Even if I really want to smack her. Also, I can see why Tamahome likes her, but why does Hotohori? A mystery.
I like the animation style. Sorry, HYD was way too artsy for me. I am a simple person and I like my bright colors.
I like the funniness of this. Like when Miaka and her friend Yui are attacked by slavers and their reaction: "Are you Chinese acrobats?" and you see a little cartoon of the acrobats and the slavers exasperatedly reply: "no, we are slave traders." Or when Miaka tries out fighting moves she's seen on pro-wresting on TV. Or Nuriko literally dragging Tamahome off, tied hand and foot with a big rope. Or (my favorite so far), when Tamahome rescues the girls and they tell him they are very grateful and his reaction? "If you are so grateful, can you pay me?" And when they say they can't, he walks off huffing something to the effect of "argh, had to rescue girls with no money." Mmmmm, I think Miaka will have to pay for her own dates :P
Tamahome is hot. Yes, I am shallow. Hotohori is even hotter. And he is nice and quiet and his narcissism is amusing. I think he is my FY crush. Or most likely, I'm up for a FY threesome.
