Yes, still Battle Royale. I'll be done with it today.
After staying up until 4:30am because I couldn't put the book down, my brain is lightly scrambled. I was dreaming about the book all night, but as I said, not nightmares, just unpleasant dreams. Hmmmm. I have also discovered, to my discomfort, that there is BR fanfic, which freaks me out as much as if there was 1984 fanfic. Just for certain things, fandoms? Not really.
The stories range between horrifying subject matter ("hi, there is a new class." Way to miss the point. And make me want to get a restraining order against you) or sort of puzzling as to why: Normally, I'd think a story involving a favorite character (and yes, yes, I adore Shinji myself. He is one of the very few in the novel who proves both his humanity and his mettle under pressure) getting a crush and hooking up can range from Mary Suish to cute, but here it seems startlingly irrelevant since he ended up on a death trap of an island, and will die horrifyingly still in his teens. And that actually goes for any interpersonal fic involving BR, unless you write a post-BR fic involving the two survivors. Because 95% of the characters in this book die. Horribly, and uselessly, and tragically. And much much too young. So, even though the novel is brilliant about us getting to know all these dozens of characters in such a brief space, a fic about what they did a month before the novel seems a huge malaprop.
Also, apparently, there is Snape/Jesus fic. Yes. The sheer thought of it makes me happy.
