Haven’t seen the new Veronica Mars but glad to hear the consensus is that it’s good. I did tape it so will watch today. But last night husband and I ended up marathoning Trigun up until ridiculous hours instead. Sorry Veronica, but a sexy gunslinger with a guilt complex the size of Arizona wins over a high school girl detective any day. :P I have to say I’ve fallen madly in love with Trigun, the way I haven’t fallen in love with anything for months and months. It’s the sort of feeling that “it can’t be all! There has to be more!” and not wanting to watch anything else because no matter how good, it won’t be Trigun. If it was a book, I’d do the same thing I did with Louis Bussenar’s Diamond Thieves when I was 10. Turn back to the first page and start over as soon as I finished the book the first time (there was a month where I read nothing but that book over and over again). Is there good fic anywhere out there? I don’t care which character. (ETA: Oh My God. People write Knives/Vash fic out there. If there is one twincest pairing worse than Fred/George or Luke/Leia, I've found it).
Since I was also too hyper to go to bed right away, I ended up watching the first episode of the
katranna-recommended Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers), an anime about a poor girl who is a student in a very rich high school and who comes afoul of F4, the gang of four rich boys who rule and bully the school and, shock of shocks, she fights back. Oh, and there is romance of course. I didn’t fall madly for it, in my Vash-haze, the way I did for Trigun after only one episode, but it’s interesting enough for me to continue watching.
Very Scattered Thoughts on HYD:
1. The colors are very very odd. They are these impressionistic pastel and they don’t look like anime I’ve seen before. It’s very pretty but awfully distracting. I don’t know if I like it yet.
2. If Veronica Mars watched anime, this would be her favorite show ever. Plucky girl who takes on the rich high schoolers and doesn’t back down? All the while hooking up with Richie Riches? Hmmm…
3. People who had fits because James, Sirius and Remus ganged up on Snape in high school, stay away. This is going to give you conniptions and palpitations and spasms. As to me, I am easily distracted by the pretty.
4. The gang that rules the school is called F4 for “Flowery 4?” What kind of a name is that for bullies? “Fearsome Four” or heck, even “Fang Four” is at least faintly something. “Flowery Four” sounds like they should be entering impromptu poetry competitions instead.
5. Oh, I definitely get a Bollywood vibe. And Tsukushi (the heroine) even needs a rich husband! Which could be a problem seeing that she pissed off the 4 richest most influential boys in school. Oh well, since I read spoilers, I know she ends up with her own Mr. Darcy (and probably a nice big plane or maybe a yacht) so any anime Mrs. Bennet equivalent should be happy.
6. I really like Rui, the quietest F4 member. Not only does he seem to be the prettiest, he actually seems rather nice, for a spoiled rich boy. And he seems to only go along with the bullying because of others (heeee, is he this group’s Remus? But I am a Sirius girl!) He helped Tsukishi with her trash bucket, and he made those bullies (who were sicced on her by his friend (!)) leave her alone and he plays the violin and he can actually have a conversation. Me likes. Though of course still smackable.
7. OK, Doumyouji, the gang leader, ends up liking Tsukushi (spoilers are your friend). Considering that their first “OMG!She is a person” meeting takes the form of her punching him in the head and putting a red sticker on his forehead, I foresee a happy future for his credit card, being used in all the most exclusive s&m and dom/sub clubs of the world. Seriously. I wonder about the boy’s proclivities.
That’s it on it for now…
With no connection to the above whatsoever, the Beefcake of the Day is the sexy Milind Soman, Bollywood actor and former model. Unfortunately, he hasn't been in too many movies (what, are they blind!) But he was very good as the lead in the adorable, chick-flick-done-right fun of Rules: Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula, about a mousy photographer who sets over to win a male model she's always had a crush on by using her grandmother's bag of tricks and advice, only to realize a bit too late that it might not be fun to have a guy purely by trickery. There is even kissing in that movie! And loving gay couples!
He is also starring in the upcoming and very interesting sounding fantasy period love story about the Himalayas Valley of Flowers which has a page full of links and pictures here
Anyway, here is Milind:

In other news, I must admit that often I look forward to Bollywood movies more than I do to Hollywood. So here is my list of the dozen most looked-forward-to and why.
1. Jodha-Akhbar
Dir: Ashutosh Gowariker
Actors: Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai
Why: It's been topping my most anticipated Bolly list ever since I've heard of it, and will do so until it comes out, barring elephants stepping on the actors on set. A period epic starring a couple of actors I've always wanted to see together and directed by one of my favorite directors? With conquest and costumes and swords and elephants? How could I not fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
2. Water
Dir: Deepa Mehta
Actors: John Abraham, Lisa Ray
Why: Good question. Maybe it's because it deals with the social stigma of widowhood. Or because I think Deepa Mehata is a great director. Or because John Abraham is smoking hot. Probably a combination.
3. Guru
Dir: Mani Ratnam
Actors: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai
Why: I know nothing about the movie except for director and the cast. But Mani Ratnam is the best Indian director working today, IMO, and there is no movie of his I wouldn't run to see, even when knowing nothing about it. Ratnam can get amazing performances out of his actors, too, and after seeing the revelation that was Abhishek in Ratnam's Yuva, I can't wait to see AB work with Ratnam again, and I can't wait to see what Ratnam makes of Aishwarya.
4. Eklavya
Dir: Pradeep Sarkar
Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Sunjay Dutt
Why: It's a period movie, which I am a sucker for. It's about a twisted, messed up family, which I am a sucker for. It has Saif Ali Khan in a serious role and romancing Vidya, which I am a sucker for. It's from the same team of people who did Parineeta, which I am a sucker for. I am a sucker for this movie.
5. Umraao Jaan
Dir: J.P. Dutta
Actors: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai
Why: Period movie. Abhishek and Aishwarya together. Complicated story about a courtesan and her love and loss and all that gorgeous angst.
6. Fanah
Dir: Kunal Kohli
Actors: Aamir Khan, Kajol
Why: Shall I start with the part where I've always wanted to see Aamir and Kajol as a couple, ever since 1997's Ishq where their quasi-sibling relationship stole the movie with its utterly inappropriate chemistry? Or the fact that this is the first movie for Kajol, my favorite actress, since 2001? Maybe the fact that it's done by KK who did one of my all time favorites Hum Tum, or that it's about terrorism.
7. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
Dir: Karan Johar
Actors: Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherji, Priety Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Arjun Rampal
Why: That cast is a dream come true. And KJ's movies are always entertaining, insanely rewatchable, and way too pretty. Plus, this one was partially shot in New York.
8. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam
Dir: ???
Actors: Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan
Why: the story of a poor wife and her weak-willed husband, and a servant who witnesses the drama and falls in love with her is damn good in its own right. Priyanka is beautiful enough to be Bibi, and it will be fun to see Salman do something unusual as the severely lacking husband. Plus, period movie!
9. Omkara (Othello)
Dir: Vishal Bhardwaj
Actors: Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan
Why: Are you kidding? It's the Indian version of Othello!
10. Marigold
Dir: Willard Carroll
Actors: Salman Khan, Ali Larter
Why: The plot is that a third rate American actress gets stranded in India. It's a Hollywood movie and I can't wait to see Salman speaking English, and in my normal local theater. Yay!
11. Don
Dir: Farkan Akhtar
Actors: Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra
Why: It sounds like a fun, silly romp about a meek street entertainer impersonating a gangster. And no one can pull it off like Shahrukh.
12. Krrish
Dir: Rakesh Roshan
Actors: Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra
Why: come on, have you seen the pretty?
