crumpeteer, you were right. I loved "Diablo" with Vash pushed to the wall emotionally and mentally and everything. When he loses it after seeing those people killed and really snaps, whoa.
Also, scars! No wonder he wears so much clothing. Though I must be sick because I agree with Meryl, girls won't run on seeing those. In fact, they are kinda hot.
I do find Vash's facade quite interesting. He is not always in control of it (you can see just how hurt he is when the law guy throws him out of that town, even though he masks it quickly) because he has such a sweet, genuine, gentle soul and his whole life hurts him quite badly, but I think his lame pick-ups and his whining about exhaustion/pain when not in his serious, people's life is threatened mode is not 100% an act. It's just that then he can relax and let himself go and allow himself to feel pain or exhaustion or frustration. When he is protecting others, or fighting a threat etc, any of those feelings are not a luxury he can have so he manages to put them into background.
And he loves children. Which is utterly sweet.
I think he and Wolfwood make the best partners ever, btw.
Also, Legato? Freaking scary villain. Ugh. That scene where he forces Vash to use his powers, even as Vash is pleading with him not to and cannot control himself as Legato has taken over his will? Broke me. Especially when you see all those people he's helped previously sink back into their misery, believing that Vash just played them and that he is as horrible as everyone says. And Milly having to drag Meryl away from there. Guuuh. There were some...unladylike noises...made in my apartment at Legato.
