Hayden picspam and yet more Kenshin
Mar. 15th, 2006 02:24 pmInspired by
crumpeteer who linked to
hayden_ew comm, I bring you a lovely Hayden Christensen picspam. Because the boy is GORGEOUS.

In completely unrelated news, I definitely jumped ahead and ended up reading the Enishi parts of the RK manga at Borders (and am now reading the translations for yet-unpublished-in-US parts on line) as I know the anime won't cover it.
Talk about a brother in law from hell. Apparently Tomoe keeps causing issues even from the grave.
And Enishi makes Kenshin believe Kaoru is dead, complete with a corpse and everything. Which is about the worst thing he could do to Kenshin, because not only does Kenshin love Kaoru, but also since Enishi only killed her because she is Kenshin's, Kenshin knows it's his fault, it's because Kaoru got involved with him, because he didn't leave her. And of course this also brings back memories of Tomoe and the situation is, in a strong way, Tomoe Part 2. That is horrible. Kenshin, meet insanity. No wonder he completely shuts down. I guess it's better than if he went Battousai.
And I love that it's Aoshi who figures out the truth, because he is both very logical and methodical and screwed up at the same time, and I think can think the way Enishi would think (that's a lot of 'think's). He's been down the well of blank unreasoning hatred, after all. And I love that his reason is that Enishi would want to kill Kaoru in front of Kenshin, so as to torment him to the max, and since he didn't, and Enishu is good at puppets, there is a chance Kaoru is still alive. And he is right.
Basically, Kenshin's skill at making friends with scary people who want to off him is really useful.
And I also love that Aoshi ends up in a massive fight and afterwards Saito is all "I thought you planned to die in the fight" because of course Aoshi still has major guilt issues from his all-expenses-paid trip to the Dark Side, and Aoshi is "I can't, because there is someone waiting for me to return" and it intercuts to Misao. Be still my shippy heart. What with Kenshin's breakdown over Kaoru and this, I am one hell of a giddy shipper. Eeeee. Misao keeps Aoshi from death. Swoooooon. Yeah, I am now spoiled for parts of the Kyoto arc (like the fact that Aoshi a. doesn't die in Kyoto b. snaps out of his psychoness c. makes up with Misao) but hey, I am knew it already.
Btw, how do you hint gently to husband that for that nice birthday present you want the entire (published so far in English) set of RK manga?

Date: 2006-03-15 08:27 pm (UTC)Re: Enishi. While I hate what he did to Kenshin (and Kaoru), the main thing I feel for the man himself is pity. He is broken. And not temporarily a la Aoshi, but permanently, irretrievably (IMO). He can function a bit better in the future maybe, but he isn't going to get fixed.
Tomoe mildly annoys me (I prefer hyper and pro-active and cheery to the quiet proper type), but she didn't deserve what happened to her. Kenshin's life hurt a lot of people, intentionally and unitentionally, and it makes sense that some of them would snap.

Date: 2006-03-15 08:36 pm (UTC)Kenshin's women are interesting. The Kenshin we know probably would never have gone for Tomoe. It's the Battousai that responds to Tomoe, it's Kenshin that responds to Kaoru.

Date: 2006-03-15 08:44 pm (UTC)That's really interesting. Yeah, I can't see the Battousai wanting to deal with someone unpredictable and hyper and tomboyish. Too focused and too screwed up and too serious.
Kenshin's actions had far reaching impact and he's directly responsible for Enishi's screwed up ness.
I find RK a lot more hopeful than a lot of similar stories, because a lot of them have a tendency to show this influence spread in negative circles: Kenshin screws up Enishi's life, Enishi in his pursuit of Kenshin screws up the life of character A, character A...so forth ad nauseam.
I think Kenshin, by giving up killing and trying to atone, is really breaking up the vicious circle.
Enishi ends up also wandering around looking for redemption
I find it interesting how many RK characters want redemption or atonenment. Not just Kenshin and Aoshi and Enishi but Megumi (for the drugs she made) and Sano (who, it is made explicit, feels guilty for running on Sagara's orders and not fighting for him. He wants to save Kenshin because it's his second chance. Btw, Captain Sagara was hot. A pity he was killed...)

Not only breaking it, Kenshin starts reversing it. Sano, Megumi, Enishi, Aoshi, and even Saito in a weird way all firmly align themselves with the side of "good" and the moralistic responsibility that entails.

And if you DO figure out a method for making husbands buy manga, please share the secret!

I think I'll have to resort to explicit "here's what I want for birthday" statements :)

Ooh, and speaking of hot guys...I read on TV Guide's site that Jason Behr is going to be one of the leads in a show called 'The Way', "a CBS drama about a New England clan that uses witchcraft to further the family business." Sounds pretty interesting. :)
