Randomness of the highest order
Mar. 14th, 2006 08:28 pmWhy is Pretear called Pretear? Are the characters in that stage right before crying? I want to have a show called "Prehiccups." I did not just purchase the freaking thing on ebay.
Is anyone else excited to have Veronica Mars back? Finally. I am beginning to forget what they look like. Logan is that short African American basketball player, right? The one who always hangs out with the lead, Victoria?
Also, I realized I like samurai anime. Recs? Because I still have over 50 eps of Kenshin to go *watches as massive defriending happens* but I need to plan ahead. I like hot men (even if animated) and fighting. Which makes it no different than my taste in live action. Is that so wrong? Fighting=angst. And violence.
Shantaram is being made into a movie. Except that they would have to condence 900+ pages into two hours. And the fact that I adore Johnny Depp but he is totally wrong. Russell Crowe I can see. Johnny Depp? Not so much. I adore the man but he looks like he'll keel over if you give him a surprise punch, as opposed to someone who escaped out of maximum security prison and feels justifiably confident he can take on a guy with a sword when he has nothing but fists. He played a mob guy in Blow but that was kinda peaceable drug dealing, not gun-running into Afganistan. Though I get to see him tortured, which is always yay (see above point about angst). Also, I am wondering who'd they cast as all the Indian characters, as most of them are Indian. Somehow I doubt Bollywood is about to be emptied of its actors. Though I can so see Rajpal Yadav as Prabakar. And Amitabh as Khader Khan. Add in John Abraham as Abdullah and we are set. But I doubt they'd do that, so what do we have? I know Naveen Andrews is the default Indian the way Ken Watanabe is the default Japanese (heck, default anything Asian) but he can't be cloned...
I should not post after having a huge cup of Starbucks coffee. Too much shaky finger motion. Not to mention scattered thoughts

Date: 2006-03-15 02:26 am (UTC)Samurai Deeper Kyo, Basilisk and Seven Samurai are all samurai anime. Inuyasha, Ikki Tousen, Magic Knights Rayearth, Tenjo Tenge and Samurai Gun all rely heavily on the fighting tradition, just in different settings.
Other rec you may or may not like.
Full Metal Panic- Hijink of a military operative sent to protect a school girl. Switches between funny and poignient.
The SoulTaker- Highly underrated anime about a boy trying to figure out why his mother just tried to kill him. A little bit of noir, a little horror, a little Hitchcock.
Yu Yu Hakusho- A boy who's killed in the first episode fights demons so he can get his life back. Buffy crossed with a bit of Scooby Doo sometimes. Worth it just for irritable and sarcastic Hiei, THE best deadpan line delivery in anime.
E's Otherwise- Certain humans have evolved psychic skills and they're attempts to not be exploited by the powers that be.
Spiral- About a boy trying to figure out what happened to his missing brother and how that might be tied to a mysterious group called The Blade Children.
Grenadier- Two unlikely partners travel across Japan trying to stop a senseless civil war that has broken out. A bit of fanservice now and then, but a highly watchable samurai/western nonetheless.
Fafner- An extremely smart anime about humanity's fight against a war like group of aliens. Teenagers are the only ones able to use the technology to fight and angst ensues. Doesn't end how you think though.
Gilgamesh- The world has come through the Apocalypse and two siblings with psychic powers might be the only ones able to save what's left of humanity from extinction.
I'll leave off there, because I could rec forever.

Re: Crash. I hated it because thought it was preachy. But a number of cool people on my flist liked it, so... :)

Samurai Champloo is quite cool and fun to watch. And Ninja Scroll, which obviously is about ninjas not samurais was also quite good in my opinion.

Date: 2006-03-15 03:26 pm (UTC)If Isabelle Anjani (Queen Margot) was younger and could do the accent, I'd say she'd be a perfect Karla. As it is, Monica Belucci is the best bet, if she can do the accent. I know Helena Bonham Carter is cast, but I don't know as who. Can't see her as Karla. And Emily Watson is in it as well, but the only one I'd imagine she'd fit is whats-her-name, the one Vikram (who could totally be Saif) is in love with.
I didn't see Craig in Munich, but I saw him in Layer Cake and he could totally work. Sigh. I love the idea of Craig or Crowe over Depp, but what are you going to do? Hope for the best and hope that Depp could pull it off, I guess.

Date: 2006-03-17 05:23 am (UTC)Bleach is fairly samurai-esque, if modern death-god-samurai type--I think you'd like it a lot, if you like Kenshin so. not that they're really very similar beyond lots of young men swinging katana, and the occasional woman, but for some reason I tend to lump them together in 'feeling.' Not sure if it's been recced before. Tsukihime and fate/Stay Night don't deal with samurai per se, but they're set in Japan and certainly based around a lot of fighting and angst, comedy included. And there's always Naruto, which is weird alternate-universe-modern-ninja and currently has... probably over 200 episodes. '_'

Date: 2006-03-17 08:11 am (UTC)1) Blade of the Immortal, which I am convinced takes the usual samurai paradigms of honor and duty and then proceeds to invert them, shake them up and down, stomp on them, mock them, and then maybe acknowledge that okay, perhaps there's something to them. It's a beautiful, beautiful manga, with beautiful (in terms of personality and character, although some also in face) characters and character growth. Nominally a story of a man who can't die and a girl seeking revenge for her slain parents, it basically keeps these beginnings in mind, but adds layers and more twists onto the story, until it becomes something else altogether. For some reason, though, it's really hard to find in bookstores nowadays. D: Possibly because it was still being printed in left-to-right format. I'm not sure. At any rate, I have a bunch of the volumes in electronic format, which I can probably upload if you'd like.
2) Avatar: the Last Airbender, which admittedly I don't actually know much about, beyond crazy magical high-styling kung fu and good plot and characters. American-made animation, but I've heard really good things about it from a number of people.
Also, I just remembered I'd recced Bleach before, so sorry about the monomaniacal repetition. XD;
