dangermousie | Bollywood does action: Dus

The newest Bolly movie I watched and liked is Dus. It's quite atypical for Bollywood, and for the kind of Bollywood movie I like. It's a slick action movie, with well-choreographed action and no one trying to avenge the rape of their sister with swords. But since it's Bollywood, there's some angsting as well and some singing (Dus Bahane is stuck in my head even as it makes me laugh at the same time), though they put my favorite (and mushiest) song of the bunch in the extras. I would have loved for this to be a TV show!

Plot: The anti-terrorism squad is trying to stop the Osama-lookalike Jambwal, holed up in Canada, from doing something terrible in 7 days. But government pressure is on to drop it, so two of the officers go to Canada unofficially to sort it out. The whole thing reminds me of a pilot for a really cool show I would love to watch. And the whole, there are many subplots (sometimes too many. Did we really need to know about Suniel's kid?) and somewhat open endings go with it.

Stylish (Siddharth, Dan, Shashank, Adi):

Characters: They consist of four ATC officers and people they run across (or angst over).

Siddharth (Sanjay Dutt): He's the head of the ATC and sort of a paterfamilias to the group. He is tough, rough, and uses guns very well. Unlike any other police paterfamilias, he can even dance a little.

Aditi (Shilpa Shetty): She appears to be the only woman in the squad. That's all right, because she can kick butt with the best of them, and does. She also has a sorta-office-romance-thing going with Siddharth. And the two younger members of the four treat her as an elder sister of a sort. Plus, she looks stunning when she dances.

Shashank (Abhishek Bachchan): Shashank is played by Abhishek who is the hottie du jour. He is also an excellent actor, though this is not the movie to prove it (watch Yuva instead). Shashank is quiet, no-nonsense and very alpha. He's Siddharth's younger brother. He's also very protective of his sister Anu and has (since he falls for someone played by Esha Deol) a bad taste in women.

Aditya (Zayed Khan): Adi is a goofball who is very good at his job nontheless. He has a rocky friends-antagonists relationship with Shashank because of his hopeless (or is it?) love for Anu, Shashank's sister. Of course, Shashank doesn't think him good enough for her.

People they meet:

Dan (Suniel Shetty): Not only is he an Indian cop in Canada, apparently he is the only cop, since he's the only one who gets involved in the shooting spree. Dan's brand of angst is that his wife left him when his overzealous policing caused her to have a miscarriage. Now the poor man wants her back.

Neha (Esha Deol): Neha is ATC's operative in Canada. She is tough tough tough. She helps the team on their quest, and Shashank develops a thing for her.

Anu (Dia Mirza): Shashank's sister, her engagement party to Jay is right before Shashank and Adi have to leave for Canada. But she and Adi seem to have strong feelings for each other, even if they don't act on them.
