dangermousie: (Max & Liz dreamers (by walkinthepark))

OK, on to Season 3. This is the third and last part of my three-part monster write-up on my weekend marathon. Verbose, me?

And hey, I love it already. Any season that starts with Liz and Max passionately kissing in a car and then going in to “rob” a convenience store is doing something right.

I have seen 3 eps so far, and I like the vibe a LOT better than S2’s. It’s back to interpersonal stuff as opposed to much more sci-fi bent of S2 and I don’t love Roswell for scifi.

The one negative appears to be Isabel’s increased screen time (and her schmoopiness with Mr. Buff and Boring Lawyer), but that’s always a risk in any ensemble show, and that is what the 2x+subtitles button is for.

Moving on to everything else. Which I love.

Guuuuh, I adore beyond words the fact that Max and Liz are back together. I love the fact that once she decided to be with him, she does not hold back one bit. She will help him find his son (who he’s had with another woman), she will help him do illegal stuff to do it, and she will go to jail with him and refuse to sell him down the river and still come out wanting and loving him. I love her.

As to Max? Things are totally looking up for the poor guy. He is a lot more centered and normal and not-falling apart than in S2. He’s rediscovered some happiness and peace and you see flashes of early S1 Max, where he is smiling and teasing, and it’s lovely. It’s like this huge weight it lifted off his shoulders. Which, if you think about it, is due solely to Liz. Because his son is in hands of Tess, his parents kicked him out of the house, and he has nowhere to live, but this time, he has Liz, and she loves him and she stands by him, and so he can take everything else the world throws at him. He only falls apart without her.

I loved Max asking Liz out for a date, with that huge bouquet of flowers, and the laughing and the fun and the skinny-dipping (and he mentions grandchildren, heeeee). Of course, seeing them so carefree, you know something bad is going to happen ;) And it does, he hears his son cry for help. And so, despite what he told Liz about that part of his life being completely over, he still wants to find him.

And the wonderful thing is, Liz wants to help. I love her coming up to him and basically jumping on his lap and saying that she will help him, because she knows how she feels with him and how she felt without him. And he doesn’t want to involve her in anything dangerous, but she demands to be allowed to help. Max is very very lucky.

And I love the way the pull off the Las Cruces heist and are all over each other afterwards. Liz, the good girl, is totally getting a thrill about all that illegal stuff. Gets her hormones going, :D

And then of course they break into that convenience store because Max knows there is a ship facility under it and get caught and even when they are arrested, they just look at each other, and there is no regret in her eyes.

And then when the Judge releases him and not her, he comes and tries to bust her out (good lord, they really are turning into Bonnie and Clyde) and says they could just run and she says “no,” because she always has tons of common sense and he says he wishes he was in her place and you can tell he feels guilty but she says this way will work out better since he can go explore the facility.

Of course, the FBI is onto him, which is rather worrying, but on the plus side, he and his father manage to blackmail the FBI to let Liz out (who, meanwhile, has been refusing to implicate Max in the slightest).

But Max’s dad demands to know why they broke into the store and Max says he can’t tell because it would put the father in danger and so he replies that if he won’t tell, he should leave the house, and Max, quietly, without much fuss, agrees. I love the guy.

And then Liz’s parents tell her that she is never to see, speak or even be near Max again. And Liz does not promise or reply or anything. But as she is being led out by her parents, Max is standing there watching her, looking at her and they just look at each other and smile and she continues to look, not a bit abashed by the fact that her parents are right there, until the car completely drives away. Have I mentioned I love Liz?

In the other two eps I’ve seen, Liz and Max continue their relationship come hell and high water. I love the letter she writes to Max, telling him how much she loves and misses him. I love that she knows what she wants. And I love the fact that he comes to the Crashdown door (he is not allowed to come in) and just stares at her and they stare at each other. And then he manages to sneak into the kitchen and put little messages for her on the wall (thought balloons from one of the alien kitsch paintings) which is utterly adorably cute and she runs into the kitchen and they are into each other’s arms and are all over each other and Dangermousie is a happy camper.

And then he takes her on a date to make her dreams come true (awwww) and they go gliding on a hand glider, with him using his alien powers and then he brings her back and they are so happy and in love and it’s wonderful to see them smiling and relaxed and giddy, and then Liz’s father confronts Max and asks him if he can promise that it’s not dangerous for his daughter to be with him, and Max, who is nothing if not honest, cannot promise this. So Liz’s father says that if he as much as sits next to her in class, he is shipping Liz to an all-girls’ school in Vermont and you see how hard hit Max is by it, and I don’t want him falling apart again, please. I just want those poor kids to be happy, curmudgeonly dad be damned!

And then of course, in the next episode, Liz is discussing wanting to leave home and move in with Max and Max, being Max, is worried about that because he wants them to do it for the right reasons. But guuuh, he is so much more normal and grounded when he is with her. And Max tries to discuss with Michael about how to manage being with Liz, and they can’t stay in the state because Liz’s dad would kill them, and they can’t leave the state and basically it’s a mess, and Max feels guilty (what else is new) for the estrangement between Liz and her father and doesn’t want to get her into any more trouble. So he walks into the Crashdown, and I have to say he has guts, and demands to speak with Liz’s dad but the father won’t listen and just throws him out and argh!

On the Michael and Maria front, I am a happy camper too. I love how Michael is always there, taking care of her. And how he is trying to graduate and get two jobs and everything, for her, so he could give her a good life, I suppose. And it’s great to see him have fun and bond with the guys at the security firm because outside of the Pod Squad and Maria, Michael never had friends. So this is great. I think the whole “don’t have to worry about leaving” thing really took off a lot off his (and Max’s mind). It killed that really unwelcome and confusing ambiguity.

I love Maria wanting to see him in his security guard uniform and Max coming in and asking if this was some kind of a “deranged sex thing.” ROFL.

Michael is completely domesticated, heee. He tells her he will do what she wants when she says he doesn’t spend time with her, and he is not being snarky or a push-over, just matter of fact about trying to make her happy. And I love how he double books the night he is supposed to have a date with her together with the bowling with his new friends and tries to do the sneaky thing because he thinks she will be uber-mad, and of course, she catches him, but instead of being mad she tells him she realized she had never seen him laugh like that before and she was jealous but it’s great that he has friends and he should totally go and have fun and just make up to her for the really bad sandwich in this place and I love his grin when he is completely dumbfoundedly asking “so this is OK?” Heeeee. I love poor confused, in love, sweet Michael. He’s come a loooooooong way from “I don’t need anyone.”
