dangermousie: (Max & Liz dreamers (by walkinthepark))
[personal profile] dangermousie
I have continued my Roswell marathon by finishing "Wiped Out" and watching the two-parter "Meet the Dupes" and "Max in the City."

The Max and Liz angst fest continues, though marginally less angsty. I bet Max only wants to die about 20 times per hour now.

When they found out in Wiped Out that the humans were all going to disaappear eventually, even Liz, Maria and Kyle, I loved the look in Max's eyes when he looks at Liz. You know, that relief he had when he first saw her? All snuffed out. You could tell he can't even think about it. He might be hurting so badly with Liz, but he just shuts down without.

And I love how he still wishes luck to Kyle, who promises to take care of Liz (everyone knows where Max's priorities are, I suppose) and he and Liz just look and look at each other. And of course, then Liz freaks out that she will die and never tell Max why she hurt him so. I love that it's not her death that is making her despair, it's the fact that she will never tell Max what she felt. Those poor kids...

And of course, that experience makes her want to try to be friends with him again, which is just gloriously screwed-up hopeless of her. After all that's happened, there is not much chance, is there? She just can't keep away. I do love that Max still comes to Crashdown to study because he cannot stay away either. He still loves her, even though he is hurt by her so badly. But he tells her he cannot be friends because he'd want more. And in school (when they discuss a star that burned out, yay symbolism) he tells her that yes, something so bright and fierce etc can die. Just as earlier in the Crashdown he just walked out. I think Max just shut down. He really can't take the hurt any more and doesn't want to be hurt again. When he comes to her window the night before leaving for NYC, it's a neat parallel to when she comes to his in "The End of the World" because she lights up and can't help but hope even though she knows she shouldn't, and instead it's something else entirely. He tells her he can't be friends and gives her present back to her. He wants a new start (even though he isn't capable) and my heart hurts for both of them (I also found it interesting that Max kept the pic of Liz he had hidden in his drawer even after that. Awwww).

It so sucks to be Liz. She loves Max (and has proven how much in "The End of the World") and she can't bear to see him with Tess, even friendly (I wonder if she'd be able to handle their relationship. My guess is: not). She can't keep away and she wants at least friendship, because I think she will take what she can get and just have him around, because half a loaf is better than no bread, as the saying goes. But she can't tell him how she really feels (I love how she begs Ava to help them because she loves Max and can't lose him). And at the end, when he does reveal that he wants to be friends to start again (basically because he can't be without her) and tells her that he will never ask again, but did she sleep with Kyle (and I love that he just can't believe it), she nods yes. And when he leaves, the look on Liz's face kills me. And I want to scream really loud in sheer frustration. Please tell me he finds out the truth eventually or I will have to hurt someone. He has to, at least when they are going to be making love, as he will discover she is a virgin. Argh....this is driving me up the wall. Tell him dammit!

We find a bit more about Proto-Max. I find it hard to believe he determined the fate of armies with a flip of a coin. No if he was anything like this Max. OTOH, we find from the representative-friend during the summit, that Max was an idealist who wanted reforms and society to change and went too fast. That, I can easily see. The guy just can't win.

Also, thanks to dupe-Iz, he finds out about Vilandra and what she did. I love how he yells at her to shut up. He really is utterly angry. We don't see it very often, because he is so restrained, so it's all the greater impact when he blows. I think he must feel so isolated about now, because he doesn't think there is anyone he can trust. He's never trusted Tess, Is has been hiding this from him, Michael told outsiders about granolith (Courtney), and Liz slept with Kyle. The world is falling apart around his ears horribly. If I were him, I'd just sit in my bedroom and refuse to come out.

Also, by masquerading as Isabel, the dupe-Iz really hurt Max, who really didn't need any more. When I did think it was Isabel, I wanted to smack her for the first time ever, when she told Max that he was selfish and didn't care about anyone except himself and Liz. Ugh. Haaaaaate. Because he is her brother and he loves her and he tries to take care of her and he is borderline depressive already and argh...I do find it interesting that he doesn't argue about the selfishness with her. I think he might really think he is selfish, just because he doesn't jump for joy about his destiny. The boy sets crazy standards for himself.

I actually like the fact that it's mentioned rather casually (by their father) that Max is in therapy, because honestly, not only does the boy needs it (though since he can't spill out anything, it is probably not doing any good), but any normal parent will notice how his behavior has changed and how depressed he is.

It's actually great to see Max smile again in New York, and do touristy things. He is so adorably enthusiastic. But I love how he flips in the elevator about not knowing how to be a leader and what to do. Because he doesn't think he is any sort of a leader even though he really is a very good one.

He also is really disgusted by the dupes. The look on his face when he watches Michael-dupe and Is-dupe have sex...heeee. And he is freaked out by their theft habit. And when they insult Tess, he really brings it down on them. (Btw, he seems to be growing closer to Tess which just...I can see why, as she is the one person who has not actively hurt him lately, but please Lord, no).

And I love how dupe-Iz realizes that the one way to manipulate Max is to say it's for the greater good. Though what she doesn't realize is that Max still hasn't left his brain in Roswell and also that his "human" feelings, the fact that he won't leave without Michael and Isabel (could he be picking individuals over greater good? Hmmmm) will all result in his answer of "no, not returning the granolith etc."

I do love the indescribable look on Max's face when he is called "Your Highness." I also love that Isabel doesn't want to leave Earth, not really. And the fact that Max doesn't hold their fight against her and tels her he loves her. He really has a great capacity to forgive.

I loved that Liz warned him about the granolith. I also loved that being healed by him changed Liz and now she can reach him and she does and she saves him. Loved how Iz said if there is any voice Max would hear it would be her. I also love that she was afraid (just as she was afraid in the circle in S1. I think it's because she is often uncomfortable outside the world she can really well understand and analyze. She wanted to be a chemist partially for that reason, I think) but of course stepped to the plate. She always does, just see her rescuing Max from the White Room, and driving under gunfire, and jumping from bridges and directing their escape when he is too weak. Liz-love!

The scene where she told Maria she is still a virgin? Totally cute.

Michael and Maria continue their crazy dance. When they find out Maria might disappear, I love how they hug and how Michael doesn't question but just tells her he will see her again. Love it. I love the look on his face when Maria goes off with Brody. So jealous. Good.

I like Brody. He is funny and self-deprecating and cute to Maria. In fact, if I wasn't a M/M shipper, I would be all for Maria and Brody. But as it is, he better keep those mitts to himself.

Also, poor Michael. He was devastated when Courtney died, because he did like her, and it was his fault as she died protecting him. The boy doesn't need more angst. However, I am glad the possibility of Courtney/Michael is also dust.

The dupes? Ugh. Horrible evil trolls. First off, before I deal with anything else, the duplicate Michael and Max's hair and outfits were causing me active agony. For once I was rooting for the skins or anyone else, to vaporize them to dust and spare me. Anyway, moving on...

They take all the potentially problematic qualities of Max, Isabel and Michael and magnify them. Max-dupe is so unable to share decision making it's crazy, Michael-dupe always wanting his way or the highway (and willing to kill for it), and Isabel-dupe being completely self absorbed and willing to kill her brother and betray her lover for a chance to go home. And they have none of the 3's good qualities. Michael's loyalty, Max's compassion, Isabel's family love.

The most bizarre thing of all was that I actually liked dupe-Tess, who was rather fragile (and the whole Liz-Max are meant to be is reinforced when she says that she always felt as if Zan was waiting for someone to walk into his life), and that the "Max in the City" was written by BSG's Ronald D. Moore.
