Various goodies
Feb. 21st, 2006 02:52 pmI've bought The Promise and Perhaps Love on ebay, thanks to
koalathebear inspired posts/pic spam on those movies. Can't wait to get them. See her post on The Promise and Perhaps Love. Also, inspired by her and
winterspel will watch the jdoramas Long Vacation and Good Luck next week.
On eye-candy front, the topic is anime couples. I've certainly dedicated posts to anime OTPs. See Miaka/Tamahome picspam here and here, or a Kenshin/Kaoru one here. I didn't have much Doumyouji/Tsukushi picspam but I certainly wrote about them ad nauseam. But how about my other anime ships? That is, couples I ship but who are either secondary couples in the anime with my main OTP or are a ship in anime which doesn't have much emphasis on romance. Anyway, here is a little list with a few pics.
Vash/Meryl from Trigun. If this anime has a main canon ship I'd imagine it's this one, but since Trigun is not primarily or even secondarily a romance there isn't much stuff out there (relatively) about this OTP (nor did I write about them ad nauseam). But I love them, and not just because he saves her life repeatedly and she helps him find a reason to live after his break-down. They genuinely care for each other, and take care of each other, and laid back guy/bossy woman is a perfect combo, anyway.

Rui/Shizuka from Hana Yori Dango. Sure, for me, HYD is all about Doumyoji/Tsukushi's messed-up relationship, but I have a huge soft spot for Rui and Shizuka. He is withdrawn and cold and a bit too passive and she is ruthless and passionless in her perfectionism but somehow they really work for each other. She is is his first and only love and she discovers that she loves and wants him and no one else. The image of their final reunion is one of my favorite scenes in anything, ever.

Sanosuke/Megumi from Rurouni Kenshin. I wrote about why I like them earlier and am too lazy to repeat, but honestly it's because they just click...

Hotohori/Houki from Fushigi Yuugi. Talk about obscure. In part because hey, it's as close to Nuriko/Hotohori as you could get with someone as clearly straight as Hotohori. But largely it's because I wanted Hotohori to find happiness and he seemed to have found it at last with Houki. I didn't watch any of the 3rd OVA, except for the scene at the end where he is reunited with Houki and his son. It made no sense, within the logical parameters of that world that he would be able to do that, but I didn't care. And they looked happy and yay.

I have no idea if the person in this pic is Houki or Nuriko and hey, does it matter? They look alike:

Doumyouji/Tsukushi from Hana Yori Dango. All right, I lied. There is NO way D/T are not a main OTP or one I didn't write about before. But I just like the pics.

ETA: Not a ship pic, but I just love this shot of Hotohori and his son from one of the OVAs. Talk about piling on the angst. He can't even freaking touch him. I won't watch OVA because they screw up the basic world rules set in the series (and because the story ended and didn't need any sequels), but I just might end up ffing and watch all the Hotohori parts anyway if I see more pics like this.

Date: 2006-02-21 08:14 pm (UTC)I like Houki/Hotohori simply because he seemed so happy with her. There are certain pairs that are like that for me. It's not so much that I like both parties, just that I like the one enough to know that the person makes them happy, so I'm all for the OTP (I have that feeling with Gram/Vess, as I'm not sure I like her, but he likes her enough that it has my blessing).

Date: 2006-02-21 08:18 pm (UTC)Oh, exactly. Houki is a really minor character who we don't get to know much at all (well, we might in the OVA I think, but I skipped those), so even though she comes across as nice and beautiful and eminently suited to be empress, the main reason I root for the OTP is because I adore Hotohori and she makes him happy and he doesn't have to be lonely any more.
He also has the added gift that even when she's frustrated with him, he can get her smiling, because he's Vash.
Yup. I love how she can't stay mad at him, and even when she is mad, she isn't really mad, if it makes any sense. She is annoyed, frustrated, but not truly in a hate mode.

Date: 2006-02-21 09:37 pm (UTC)Do you know, this is a great description. And somehow they manage this seamlessly (I keep thinking of the scene where he goes all Battousai to save her from an opponent who wants to fight the famous assassin and she just instinctively knows that her usual in-your-face approach is not right under these circs). They just work together. And then when the danger is past they switch back to her bossing him and him acting as if he is easily bossed.
They are both fire, they are both combustible. That's what makes them so interesting as a pairing.
Oh yes. That would be a couple in a constant state of fighting and making up. But Megumi is a great deal too poised otherwise and Sanosuke kinda throws her off balance and makes her human...

Date: 2006-02-21 10:27 pm (UTC)I meant to ask though - I'm assuming that you watch the anime in original Japanese with subtitles and not the versions dubbed into English? I know there are some anime that are dubbed.

Date: 2006-02-21 10:39 pm (UTC)All those years of watching Bollywood are good training (I remember going through a severe BW phase where I'd watch only Bolly movies and when the TV was on the news it felt weird to hear English :))
I'm assuming that you watch the anime in original Japanese with subtitles and not the versions dubbed into English?
Yes. I don't like watching things dubbed as I like to see things as close to original as I can...
