In order, from most looked forward to, the least, with reasons:
1. Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith:
Cast: Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor
Plot: Come onnnn! Ok, for those who have been comatose for 20 or so years: Anakin, meet Lord Vader.
Why: Everything. Love, tragedy, duels and more. Read my lj...
Why Not: Can't imagine, unless being a sobbing wreck counts.
2.Kingdom of Heaven:
Cast: Orlando "yum" Bloom, Liam "yay" Neeson, Jeremy "also yay" Irons, Edward "of course yay" Nortorn, Eva "the token chick" Green
Plot: In between 2nd and 3rd Crusade, a knight comes of age as he defends Jerusalem. I researched the real story this is based on, and it was bloody fantastic.
Why: If any movie has a chance knocking SW off my No 1 spot, it's this. Grim Medieval Epic with a fantastic director and cast.
Why Not: Liam Neeson probably dies yet again
3.Parineeta
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Sanjay Dutt
Plot: http://www.livejournal.com/users/dangermousie/19020.html
Why: The visual look is stunning. The plot (about unconsciousness of love and cruelty of lovers) sounds like it has complicated characters. And I've been dying to see Saif Ali Khan in a completely serious role.
Why Not: I can't think of a reason. Unless the lovers die. Don't let me down, author of Devdas!
4. Paheli
Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan,
Plot: In 15th century Rajastan, a ghost takes the place of an absent husband and the woman falls in love with him.
Why: I know nothing about 15th century Rajastan. The story is unusual to say the least (the theme is supposed to be about oppression of women). And it has my BW favorite, SRK in a double role.
Why Not: SRK has a mustache at least in one incarnation.
5. Memoirs of a Geisha:
Cast: Zhao Ziyi, Gong Li
Plot: life of a...duh...geisha
Why: about a period I know little about. Fantastic cast.
Why not: don't like the Director. Period pieces can sometimes end up a stuffy bore.
6. The Rising
Cast: Aamir Khan, Toby Stephens, Amisha Patel, Rani Mukherjee
Plot: Follows Mangal Pandey, the Sepoy whose defiance of the British sparked the 1857 uprising.
Why: I am a sucker for period movies. This has an excellent cast (Aamir is back after a 4 year absence, and Toby Stephens who plays his best friend is one of my British favorites), a stirring story and the stills look breath-taking. Plus, the love story between Toby and Amisha (a widow he rescues from the suttee) has got my heart going.
Why Not: It’s been delayed for ages. I will believe it’s out when it’s out.
7. Water (or whatever it's called now)
Cast: Lisa Ray, John Abraham
Plot: The third part of Deepa Mehta’s trilogy, this examines the stigma of widowhood.
Why: The two other parts (Earth and Fire) were phenomenal. The story is interesting. And I love John Abraham
Why Not: Will it just be a preach-fest?
8. Tristan and Isolde:
Cast: James Franco, Sophia Miles, Rufus Sewell
Plot: Star-crossed medieval lovers of legend angst and fight battles. Woooo!
Why: Like the cast, and the medival love story
Why Not: Even that can get ruined by bad script/direction and I know nothing about either.
9. Cinderella Man:
Cast: Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Paul Giamatti
Plot: Depression era boxer struggles to feed his family. Russell struggles to get another Oscar.
Why: Russell Crowe. Uplifting Story
Why Not: Renee Zellweger. She's everywhere.
10. Batman Begins:
Cast: Christian "hotter than Michael Keaton" Bale, Liam "needs to work more!" Neeson, Katie "insanely dating Tom Cruise" Holmes.
Plot: Batman, erm...begins.
Why: Love the director, the lead and the hint of darkness
Why Not: Don't care for any other Batman movies. Plus, his girlfriends always change.
11. King Kong:
Cast: Adrien Brody, Naomi Watts, Jack Black
Plot: Giant ape falls for midget girl. Crushes New York when date goes sour.
Why: Peter "LOTR" Jackson's next movie. A period monster flick set in the 30s with Adrien Brody
Why Not: Not fond of the original. Plus, know the story backwards.
12. White Countess:
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson
Plot: a blind aristocrat falls with a down-on her luck scam artist.
Why: Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson in a period romance? What more do I need.
Why Not: Made by Merchant Ivory, and their Howards End is one of the stuffiest films ever.
13. Spielberg’s Munich project:
Cast: Eric Bana
Plot: In the aftermath of Munich Olympics massacre, Hulk Smash.
Why: The story of Mossad agents tracking down terrorists who killed athletes grips. Plus, Spielberg.
Why Not: Spielberg's Last was "The Terminal"
14. Marigold
Cast: Salman Khan, Ali Larter
Plot: A crossover movie about a third rate American actress who is stuck in India and must act to earn some money. She does not know how to dance, enter Salman, the choreographer.
Why: It’s cross-over! With old-time HW plot and Salman being sexy and speaking entirely in English. Roooowwwwwrrrrr!
Why Not: As long as it doesn’t succumb to “aren’t we cool” syndrome.
15. The Fountain:
Cast: Hugh "I am not just Wolverine. Honest" Jackman, Rachel "yes, I am still working" Weitz
Plot: 3 vignettes about man traveling through time to save his beloved wife. Give it up, didn't work for Anakin.
Why: Hugh Jackman in three stories traveling through centuries
Why Not: Same as "Why"
16. Elizabethtown
Cast: Orlando "finally not in tights" Bloom, Kirstin "specializes in starring with yummy Brits" Dunst
Plot: suicidal guy goes back to KY small town for Dad's funeral. Hilarity ensues.
Why: Orlando in a modern role. The plot
Why Not: Vanilla Sky
17. Bunty aur Babli
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan
Plot: Two small time con artists (Abhi and Rani) pursue their cons while being chased by a cop (Amitabh)
Why: Abhi-Rani pairing sizzles. I want to see Big B and Abhi in a movie together. The story sounds like fun and so do the stills.
Why Not: Could try too hard and be another Andaz Apna Apna.
18 Beowulf and Grendel:
Cast: Gerard Butler, lots of unknown and unshaven people
Plot: Beowulf fights Grendel. Grendel's Mom offended by bullying.
Why: Gerard Butler as a Saga Hero. Beautiful Iceland
Why Not: Can just as easily be grim, dirt-coated and dull.
19. Mr & Mrs Smith:
Cast: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie
Plot: two married spies are assigned to rub each other out. Sure beats marital counselling.
Why: beautiful people romancing and fighting each other.
Why Not: Angelina Jolie's track record.
20. My Bollywood Bride
Cast: Jason Lewis, other people whose names I will look up later.
Plot: Crossover movie. Alex, a mid-westerner meets and romances Indian beauty Reena, while she is on a vacation in California. Torn by her blossoming feelings for Alex and her Indian family values and obligations, Reena returns home without saying goodbye. Alex, distraught by the turn of events, decides to follow her to Mumbai and win her back.
Why: Sounds delightfully romantic and fun.
Why Not: Could be another Guru
21. . Humko Tumse Pyar Hai
Cast: Arjun Rampal, Amisha Patel, Bobby Deol
Plot: Blind Amisha falls in love with Arjun. Before she is cured and thus can see him, Arjun is killed in an accident. Some time later, she agrees to marry millionaire Bobby even though her heart is in the grave. Lo who shows up after the engagement but Arjun. It seems the reports of his death were highly exaggerated. He is Bobby’s best friend. Will she find out? Will Arjun tell her? Will they live HEA? I don’t much care, because there will be plenty of angst on the way. Though now that she isn’t blind, Amisha has NO excuse for not ditching Bobby with all his millions the second Arjun shows up on the scene.
Why: Angst. Old-fashioned melodrama. Hot Arjun
Why Not: At this rate of delay, will be released in 2010.
22. New World:
Cast: Colin "I want sex with 70 year olds" Farrell, Christian "I am much cooler than my co-star. AND I am Batman" Bale.
Plot: English land at Jamestown. Lots of nifty camerawork follows.
Why: Interested to see colonization of Jamestown handled. Beautiful cinematography. Plus, Christian Bale.
Why Not: Colin "Alexander" Farrell as lead. Malick is the director and his Thin Red Line was insomnia cure.
23. The Island:
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen
Plot: in the future a man discovers he is a clone and goes on the run. But not Logan's run.
Why: Ewan Clones. Distopia
Why Not: have you seen who directs?
24. Fantastic Four:
Cast: Ioan "hottie" Gruffudd, Jessica Alba etc other hot people
Plot: some superheroes fight. or something. I was distracted by the spandex hotness.
Why: Ioan Gruffudd in Spandex
Why Not: Exhibit A: Daredevil. Exhibit B: Elektra. Exhibit C: The Punisher. Exhibit D: Catwoman
25Zorro sequel:
Cast: Antonio "this time I am not animated" Banderas, Catherine "surely you are rich, so please don't work any more, OK?" Zeta-Jones
Plot: Zorro zorroes.
Why: Why Not?
Why Not: Why?
