Meteor Garden: now we get some angst.

dangermousieMaybe it's because since I've seen HYD so I know where the story is going, or maybe because rougher edges have been smoothed out, but I find myself getting impatient with Shan Cai's behavior to Dao Ming Si rather sooner than I did in the anime. When she won't answer the phone because she sees it's him and she doesn't feel like talking or when he offers to drive her home and she says she'd walk, I want to shake her a little and tell her to be a little nicer because sure he doesn't know how to behave and he is arrogant, but he is trying, in his clumsy way, to be considerate and caring and he likes you a lot. Hmmm. I do like the fact that when he tells her that he can't rest until he knows who took those compromising photos of her so he tracked the person down, she gets this dawning look on her face, as if she does start to realize, that whatever manners or whatever he lacks, it's nice to have someone who takes care of you.
Awwww, and it's hilarious and cute at the same time when he brought her into that fancy store to get her dresses and then ended up laughing at half of them. And he bought her a cell-phone just for their trip to Japan, and he carried her bag, and he wanted her to eat more during dinner. He totally tries to take care of her. If you want pretty speeches, you might as well hang yourself now, but I think practical stuff is better any day. Awwww. And she flips about the fact that their hotel room only has one bed but he matter-of-factly takes the sofa, because she hasn't given him her answer as to whether she likes him. And when she suggests she should take the sofa instead he is all "who do you think I am. A girl I like can't take the sofa" :P I just love how he manages to say the nicest sentiments in the worst possible manner. Cute.
And when he thinks Lei and Shan Cai might be carrying on behind his back, he looks so oddly quiet and vulnerable (and I love that he doesn't bring it up, but just sort of internalizes it. I guess he remembers the disaster the last time he lost his temper) that my heart kinda hurts for him. And then of course he finds them sorta-comfort-kissing on the beach and poor confused Shan Caijust wants to apologize (and later doesn't know why she feels so miserable) and he just tells her that he really liked her and he tried to make her like him and she just broke his heart all over again and I feel so bad for the boy. And she tries to touch his hand in apology and he just flinches back and tells her not to touch him. Angst.
Also, Lei, it's not nice to flirt with a girl who a close friend of yours is crazy about. It's just not done. Even though I am getting delicious MARS flashbacks every time you are together. i do love how Shan Cai looks like she is about to cry when she draws what mad Dao Ming Si looks like "thick eye-brows, fish eyes and pine-apple hair" and Lei, I think, begins to realize that Shan Cai likes Si before Shan Cai does. Oooooh, and Dao Ming Si is methodically smashing all the glass in his room. Aaaaangst.
