Nice Guy episode 5
Sep. 29th, 2012 05:48 pmEpisode 5 of Nice Guy was very good (well, except those Choco-friend-ex scenes. What are they even doing in this drama? Is LKH dying to do a romcom or something, but is pressed for time so has to shoehorn it into her airing drama?)

The thing is, it is clear by now Eun Gi is not playing Maru in any way (which I find both surprising, seeing her tough distrustful shell, and oddly true - seeing how vulnerable she is underneath). I am narratively fine with a revenge scheme on Maru's part but I do get a delicious "I can't wait until she finds out and goes apocalyptic on you" feeling for their scenes, mainly because Eun Gi is my POV character and what he is doing to her makes me blazingly angry (of course, it's all complicated by the fact that real feelings of care and concern and possibility of love are bleeding into the make-believe). What drives me nuts though is not the 'I am using EG' part, it's the fact that he is still hung up on Jae Hee. ENOUGH! It's like one of those romcoms where all the hero does is pine for the annoying second lead girl and you just want to hit the ff-button, climb into the screen and tell him to have his head examined. It makes sense 100% narratively for his character to be so hung up, but as a viewer, it just makes me want I had a brainwashing machine I could stick him into and move on past that.

Because of that, I don't truly feel like he's suffered much. Also, the penalty for killing someone in SK must be extremely light if he got out after a few short years.
I also want to punch Maru everytime he shows how hung up he still is on that backstabbing bitch. And episode 6 only made me angrier!
Maru could have learned his lesson (that the woman he loves is a manipulative and heartless ho) and re-started his life after he got out of prison. I can't believe he even stayed in that hellhole of a "house" just so Jae Hee could still find him. -- Basically most of his pain is self-inflicted and I stopped pitying him at all.

Date: 2012-09-29 11:31 pm (UTC)Pushing all that aside, I really do love EG. She's a breath of fresh air in the K-drama world. I've just become so tired of the 'icy rich girl' or the 'poor plucky girl' or the 'noona'. I love that EG has layers and that she's tough but also has an innocence to her.
I also do like the EG and MR scenes. She's completely fallen for him and he, well I think he does like her as a person. But, MR is way too hung up on revenge and JH to see EG as a woman. I think it will be really interesting when MR falls for EG.
Re; the Choco-friend-ex scenes. I'm happy they are over. They just added nothing to the overall narrative. The friend being from a rich family and Choco having issues with her lungs will surely come into play later, though. Which is fine, as long as it adds something to the story.

Date: 2012-09-30 01:42 am (UTC)My feelings exactly. I love this drama to pieces, but I will love it even more when we get to the part where Maru is crazy in love with Eun Gi and she won't give him the time of day because she hates him for using her. (Or at least I'm hoping that's what will happen.)
And yeah, it makes sense that Maru hasn't gotten over his love/hate for Jae Hee - they were together so long, their relationship was sort of like lovers, best friends and family all in one, and moreover he only found out what a horrible person she is recently - but it is frustrating.

Date: 2012-09-30 02:26 am (UTC)It's really hard to watch someone as tough as Eun-gi is let down her walls and let someone in, only to have it be betrayed. It's not pleasant. I'm just hoping that she turns the tables on him when she finds out and doesn't go into self-destruct mode.
