Hotohori!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuck. I just feel destroyed.

I've been sobbing for the last half-an-hour, hard enough that I can't see anything, my face is all red bloated splotches and I feel physically sick. I don't remember the last time I'd cried so hard for any fiction. It's years at least. At the very least, not since Return of the King.

I hate this so FUCKING much. And he didn't even get to see his unborn child's face. And his new wife (who he seemed happy with) is left all alone. And he was so selfless and he really didn't demand much from life. And what did he get? I HATE Nakago. Can't wait until someone kills him (please!)

And I just. I know it's ridiculous, he is not only a fictional chracter, he is an animated fictional character, but I can't help it. I am crying as I type.

I had a nice long post written up earlier that but now, I just...Well, I wrote it so why not post it, but I just...

I stopped the DVD and I am just going to lie down.

Soi was a child whore? And Nakago rescued her? Whoa, he did one good thing. I guess it explains her love for him. And she died saving his life. And Nakago is...never seen him look like that before. And now he carts her dead body around?

Also, Hotohori got a wife! Who looks just like Nuriko! Eeeeeee! Am so happy for him because he appears happy with her. Yessss! Except I am deathly afraid that now he is a main character again, he is going to die in the wars against Kutou. No!

Miaka and Tamahome decided to make love because they can't summon Suzuku any more. Love the scene where she tells him they will all likely die in battle tomorrow so she wants him to stay with her tonight and make her his bride. But I love even more that it didn't really get anywhere much. Which was so cute, because neither of them have much (any?) experience and it's kinda awkward etc. Adorable.

Evil Yui, to wish herself and Miaka back into their world so she will have to leave Tamahome forever. I really have no patience with Yui who, I don't think ever loved Tamahome (she liked him, he was cute, but love? Naaaaah), and is generally behaving from the venerable principle of "If I can't be happy, no one should be." Ugh.

Tamahome breaching the barriers of the worlds and coming with Miaka? Uber-cool. So is his child-like reaction to Tokyo. And I love Miaka's slavering reaction to seeing Tamahome in new modern clothes. Heeeeeee. But then he finds out he has no shadow and no reflection. And finds out he is just a character in a book and loses it. Because that is one hell of an existential crisis: he is not human, he doesn't exist, does he? But he feels he does (he wonderingly whispers "no reflection. But I can feel the cold") and he just can't deal with the fact that he and his family and the Suzaku 7 are not real. This is a hell of a thing to deal with. When he wanders the streets and thinks "My world is just in a book, written on paper somewhere? The deaths of my family, and Nuriko and Chiriko. My memories from when I was a kid, it was all just made up?" My heart just breaks for him. Of course, the way he reconciles everything isn't the way I'd do it ("I exist because of the Priestess and so does my world, so I should hold on to my love even stronger because it's the one real thing") and what he concludes isn't necessarily true (the book, after all, is both leaking into the real world and continuing without either Yui or Miaka's involvement or anyone reading it) but fits the straightforward and not too introspective character he has. And gosh, he looks even hotter in modern clothes. Never thought it was possible but I have mad hots for an animated character.

Also, the interesting thing is that in the past, the Universe hasn't been so unbalanced by the priestesses because there seems to have been only one at a time (if Nakago didn't have Yui, after all, no matter what he did, he wouldn't be a threat) and we also have Nakago, who isn't just evil and clever, but someone with no ties to one of the four countries or even that Universe so his wishes (to be a 5th God) really screw up reality of the book as he tries to alter the system and everything begins to merge.

How appropriate that Suboshi died in his battle with Tamahome largely through intervention of the ghosts of the children, Tamahome's siblings, that he murdered.

Also, they really seemed to have set up the 'Miaka can't stay in that world and Tamahome can't exist in ours' thing. I am getting really anxious.

And now Mitsukake has died! Healing all those people! How symbolic he did it to help that little child named Shoka, the same name as his fiancee whom he couldn't save. Frell.

Favorite pervy moment, btw? Much earlier after the umpteenth time they escaped death, Tamahome hugs Miaka and goes "every time you do this, it takes years off my life." And then Miaka replies "whaaaat are you grabbing?" and the camera pans down and he is hugging her breasts. :P Yes, he is so 17.

So it wasn't the OVA they killed Hotohori in. Yeah, I love that he married someone who looks exactly like Nuriko. So very cute.

Nakago and Soi really did care about each other. I actually like the part where he goes back and picks up her body and just carries her in this zoned out way.

That is one of my favourite parts too. Nakago/Soi all the way.

Though as he keeps carting her dead body around, I keep wondering, isn't she going to start to...erm...smell? Yeah, I know I am bad.

I was oddly a Nakago/Soi shipper more than anything else. I like the weird pairings really sort of like I'm a Sessh/Rin shipper in a way. N/S were both so messed up you just sort of wished they could remove themselves and live somewhere far away running a town mafia happily ever after or something.

Sessh/Rin, interesting ship. I can see how that works... if Rin were all grown up and such ;)

Totally agree with you on N/S. And speaking of weird pairings, as much as I didn't want to admit to myself, I was a bit of a Suboshi/Amiboshi shipper.

I figure the Sessh/Rin ship works since he's an immortal and she's going to grow up eventually. That and he never even considers caring about anyone else. I personally find it rather swoon worthy if Lord Fluffy and grown up Rin became a pair later on. You know he just needs someone to love him to get over his issues.

Hee. Twincest. Yeah, a lot of people are all about that pairing. I personally thought Suboshi and Yui deserved each other since he did seem a little fond of her.

Yeah, I thought they deserved each other. Only I thought it was because they were both whiny and annoying. Though Yui redeemed herself by the end. Now, Yui/Amiboshi is a crack pairing I could see.

OMG. I'd pay money to see that. I really would.

Also, after watching the whole show, I certainly understood Nakago's obsession with plans and control. It's the lack of those that caused him so much grief early on, after all.

Exactly. I understand completely why Nakago is so obsessed with manipulating people and being in control. He's never had it all his young life, so when he finally gets it in his grasp, he'll die before he gives it up. It also explains why he's all about the nihilism. Life hasn't been fair with him so he'll just end it all for everyone.

It's a very interesting question, how would he have turned out if it wasn't for the horrible misfortunes he had as a child?

I loved that in FY. Knowing his background doesn't make him redeemable. He's gone too far for that, beyond that years ago. He is not Yui and cannot be brought back. But it certainly makes him understandable, and pitiable, and any wild joy I thought I'd have when he finally died (he caused the deaths of larger part of the Suzuku 7, and made Miaka and Tamahome believe Miaka was raped etc etc etc) wasn't there because I understood what made him who he was.

Nakago reminds me of Anakin in a lot of ways when it comes to the feeling you have about him in the end. It's like after ROTS you suddenly don't watch the original trilogy in the same way. I no longer find Vader scary or hope Luke beats him, I just feel sorry for him. The same way with Nakago. You know you should be thrilled that someone that awful died, but you just can't bring yourself to it knowing what brought them to that point. Sci-fi and fantasy and anime all borrow a lot of elements from each other. A ton of similarities between the genres. That's why sci-fi and fantasy fans generally love anime. Lots of character depth and complex characters and grey area.

I think Nakago would have been a more dignified version of Tamahome, had life gone better for him. There was a deeply ingrained nobility to him that I think would have translated to a noble knight. He'd always be more pragmatic, but not like he ended up.

The thing that struck me about his death was, once he knew he lost, his sense of resignation. There was no complaining or railing or anything. Basically his attitude was 'it won't change anything so why bother.' And you got the feeling that he also had a feeling of almost expecting it, because after all, nothing else in his life went his way.
