May Queen eps 9-10. You have been reprieved, drama!

I confess I almost dumped May Queen due to the utter makjang stupidity of the first 8 eps (and seeing that's me, that's saying a lot). Luckily, this week we finally got the adult cast and so MQ is staying on, for now - the plot is still done by monkeys with brain damage and passion for melodrama, but the individual scenes sparkle (especially every time the irreverent Kang San shows up) and the cast chemistry is whoa.

My problem is I ship our heroine with both Chang Hee (Jae Hee) and Kang San (Kim Jae Won) - threesome, please!



Jae Hee, you can prosecute me any time! I am having such flashbacks to Delightful Girl Chun Hyang, which I was obsessed with years ago.





Everyone in this drama has insane chemistry. Everyone.








The most awesome first meeting ever. Kang San is dancing with a girl in a club and then the girl's older sister bursts in to drag away her delinquent younger sibling and totally punches Kang San out. Heeeee.














Why are they so perfect when they are not the endgame, drama! Seriously, threesomes, look into it!





























I love that Kang San is seemingly laid-back and smiley but with a real dark bite to him flashing on and off, and not just in regard to vengeance. He just cost our heroine her job (even if it wasn't the intent of his breaking in) and he just shrugs and grins 'oops' (now, granted, if someone beat me up, I'd probably want to get my own back too, but still, it's not what saintly heroes do).











Confronting Il Moon. Still smiling but pretty scary. There is a lot of rage under that laid-back demeanor. I have to say, I know Il Moon is a classist jerk blah blah blah but with a father like his, it's a wonder he isn't murdering puppies. Not to mention the whole thing with his Daddy making him pretend stepmom is real Mom and forbidding even the mention of the real Mom. WTF, psycho!








My heart is going to be so broken because I know, due to synopsis that he leaves her and marries Il Hwa when he finds out what his father did, and she ends up with Kang San. I mean, I adore Kang San and KJW is a huge crush, and the main reason I checked out this drama, but Chang Hee (and Jae Hee!!!) - I love him with her so much! I know they are subtly incompatible because CH is using his prosecutorial power rather corruptly, helping the Chairman etc, but still! He is so amazing with her, and considering who his father is and what atmosphere he grew up in, he is doing the best he can and waaaaaaaaa! Someone clone Han Ji Hye please!























Kang San learns that it's his childhood friend and crush who he inadvertently cost a job to (hmm, to his credit, before he learned who it was, he was still worried it was his comments about her being a gangster that cost her his job. Perhaps he isn't as uncaring as he likes to pretend).








So cute! He calls her and asks her all these questions about her childhood and he is so excited because she was totally his first love etc but she doesn't recognize who he is and thinks he's a creepy pervert and pushes him into the water. And then she finds out he really did offer her a job so she goes to fish him out so he pretends he cannot swim so she'd do CPR. And she realizes he is faking so she is about to whack him when he goes 'Hello, Tinker!' (his childhood nickname for her) with that grin and my heaaaaaaaaart! All of a sudden, I am fine with Chang Hee losing her.

I won't lie! I checked this episode just because the adults finally appeared! And I didn't watch the kids episode, but I guess I'll ? if I like the next episodes :)

It's amazing how KJW looks amazing in every color, and the brightest colors on him :)) Like all the colors he wore in CYHMH, and the pink suit here. Amazing. Goodness, like you, i love both JH and KJW toooo much, KJW for cyhmh, and JH for DGCH, so it's so hard for me.... It's sad though, JH and HJH would have been way cuter together, if not for the fact that CH can't open up with everything, due to his cold character, and dad.... Kangsan, on the other hand, has been oozing Dongju in every frame his been in. Especially when he brings his face close up to hers, just like when he did it to Woori. MQ has been crappy, but i can't let go for the two guys. I'm just holding on to this, hoping it'll get better.

also I was totally lost in the end of episode 10, I didn't know why the rich ahjumma was in a hurry to find the girl.

Technically, those girls were "gifts" from Il-Mun to "Ryan" Kang. San was making a sport out of making fun of them to their faces without them realizing it. It wasn't very nice of our saintly hero to rely on sexism to do so, though.

It's ridiculous that they spent all those episodes on the kid's backstory. There wasn't a need for that.

However, I do love that it's picket up with the adults. I've always loved KS and KJW fits perfectly with the childhood counterpart of the character. CH and HJ are adorable together! It's really going to hurt to see them break up but since I prefer KS I'm not too torn up about it. Watching May Queen remiends me of why I got so addicted to Kdrama. It's got all the classic tropes that I love and the actors have such good chemistry together.

No drama needs 8 episodes of backstory. I don't care if they were retelling the entire Bible as the backstory, you still don't need 8 eps of back story.

I prefer Kang San too and am a pathetic KJW fangirl but the fact that they made Jae Hee a prosecutor like in DGCH (and the fact that he doesn't look a day older than in DGCH) is messing with my head. I keep thinking he's Mongryong. *weeps*

The chemistry is wonderful and I do love those big, cross-generational, sprawling business/revenge epics a la Giant and East of Eden, makjang or not. So I am sticking with this.

Oh I KNOW, it's seriously making me want to rewatch DGCH. Hopefully he's able to find some happiness with In Hwa or at least get a divorce from her by the end. I would hate for him to turn evil to cover up his father's crimes but that's probably gonna happen.

I like sprawling epics as well. That and I can't resist a good underdog story. Both KS and HJ are going to be fighting to reclaim what's rightfully theirs against the baddies. Can't wait to watch those two team up!

Haha, I wonder if this is how Kim Jae-won got the impression of "sociopathism" from his character, although he did qualify that he was a) joking and b) did not consult the scriptwriter about this and c) probably an opinion not shared by the scriptwriter. In case you're wondering where this is from, it's from an interview of the adult leads (you must watch for behind-the-screen bromance!).

FYI, Kim Jae-won was Jae Hee's army sergeant, despite Jae Hee being older than Kim Jae-won by a year. They were also co-stars in another drama before May Queen, so they're friends. I'll translate the bromance bits:

Please introduce your characters.
[1:27–1:47]
KJW: "The way I see it, Kang San is a kind of sociopath..."
JH: (laughing) "It seems like you're trying to wrap this up right now."
KJW: "This is how I am imagining him...without consultation with the scriptwriter. Anyway, it's a very important role!"
JH: (puts head in his hands, groan-laughing) "I'm embarrassed...." (KJW laughs)

[2:41–3:13] As I know it, you and Bom did army duty together...
KJW: "Yes."
...and he shared a story [on Strong Heart] that you had him sleep next to the heater... (JH starts laughing like crazy, and KJW sheepishly chuckles) ...and that because his lips were so parched, he couldn't even call after you.
