I really really loved the first episode of Nice Guy - it's a very typical LKH drama -it should feel over the top and makjang given the premise but due to the excellent writing and acting instead feels painful and real. The drama is anchored by Song Joong Ki's performance - watching him go from a gentle, hopeful future doctor to this broken, hollowed-out, dark shell was crushing. He is amazing - when he's on screen, I can't look away. I've forgotten how LKH dramas can make you hurt - a lot of them start with the protagonists in the worst place and then attempt to climb out but with Maru, we start in a good place and thus his descent is all the worse. The LKH dramas this most reminds me of are A Love to Kill (hero wants to use a woman for revenge, falls in love, chaos ensues) and Sang Do, Let's Go to School (hero is a bright kid who threw away his future and got a jail sentence to protect the woman he loved and now is a gigolo (what's with LKH and gigolos?). Though in Sang Do, the girl he saved was his OTP and here she is a horrible conniving person. I only hope it ends happier than SD, though the hope is slim).

I confess I loathe, loathe, loathe medical dramas and wouldn't watch one even if starred Lee Min Ho, naked and oiled up. The last medical show I watched was a Polish soap opera in 1990. Still, it's probably wrong to wish the hero would stop being a doctor ASAP and get on with the gigolo and revenge thing. To compensate I bring two extra large caps of Doc Maru.

I love the brief scene with Maru and Choco - you see that he is a born caretaker. And despite my cracks about medical shows, I spent the first half of the episode in a constant sense of dread because I saw how sweet and happy and hopeful and adjusted he was - such a genuinely good human being - and I knew it was all going to be torn away from him, down to his very sense of self (if you think about it, not only did he wreck his life for someone who betrayed him, that, to him, calls into question his very basic sense of judgment and ability to read people or feel).

Except for the last scene of the episode, this was my favorite scene - the complexity, the emotion, somehow making me believe that Maru would do the insane thing he did. But how telling that PSY accepts his sacrifice and that the reason she won't turn herself in (though her punishment would be so much less than Maru's) is because she won't be an anchor - unlike for Maru, someone's love is not enough for her. It isn't surprising she ditches Maru for a rich old man - she is all about the externalities from the start. From the character descriptions and hints in this episode, it's clear that both of them came from disadvantaged backgrounds, but Maru somehow clawed his way to having his head on straight (except the caretaker thing - the very trait that leads him to this) while PSY did not.

Shivers...also I love that Eun Gi is this angry, closed off, damaged woman. It isn't a story about a messed-up woobie cured by the love of a saintly woman.

This sequence almost made me cry. Maru alone, contemplating the end of his life, for all intents and purposes. I keep wanting to yell at him to run. Except for the scene at the end, this is the last time we see his eyes alive.

6 years later and what strikes me throughout this scene is how dead his eyes look - it's not even indifference, it's tamped down pain, burned out soul, every other overwrought bad thing you can think of. It's someone who's been kicked too often and now has given up on life and people and hates himself and cannot stop. Also during the kissing scene, it's not even his eyes that freak me out - he doesn't even bother to take his hands out of his pockets. He's on autopilot.

I love the hatred between Eun Gi and stepmom but this scene does underline Eun Gi's damage and the fact that she isn't sunshine - that little kid is innocent but she still treats him like dirt. These characters love to spread the damage.

This scene! Gibber gibber gibber! First of all, the chemistry. How there is such insane chemistry when she's borderline unconscious I do not know, but there it is. More importantly, he starts out in his usual shut down and flippant mode, assuming it's yet another woman who wants a piece of him, but when he sees she is genuinely ill, for a moment, the mask comes down and the vulnerability is back and he looks human and he cares. And then it slams back on as soon as someone else comes along. These actors have no need for words.

He ignores the call for a doctor but, significantly, his friend does badger him into it. There is hope for your soul yet, boy!

Love to see him competent. He would have made an amazing doctor. Such a waste.

When he discovers who Eun Gi's guardian is and the world stops. It's like he's thawing, painfully, and I am shocked he doesn't start screaming right there, especially when he finds out Eun Gi is her stepdaughter and she has a child of his own.

I cannot wait to watch the next episode. This drama would be best to binge on but I have no patience for it and so will drive myself insane via weekly morsels.

I ended up feeling so deeply for Maru, even while realizing the amount of his damage and his darkness. To LKH's credit, she took a potentially insane concept and made it believable and relatable. I used to wonder what on earth would justify someone going after their ex via scorched earth policy, but watching this I understand. I actually want him to go nuclear on her. A pity he himself will be inevitably caught in the blast.

This is very much a Song Joong Ki show so far - he owns every second he is in. We saw less of Moon Chae Won as Eun Gi but I love what I see - damage and savagery and fragility mixed - no wonder she will commonality with Maru. Park Si Yeon excels at playing high-maintenance, solipcistic fragility, so she is at home in her role.

All in all, A+++.

I love you, I FLOVE your review and commentary and picspam (gawd, it's like reliving the whole episode all over again, and you realize, once again, how much he can convey with just his eyes), I love that you love NG and SJK and all the talent attached to this project, I love that someone understands my insane love for this, and I just love that you get it and get him so well.

And if you loved episode 1, you're going to worship the k-drama gods out of episode 2.

Desperately want to comment on your thoughts but I need time, sleep and food, and I need to calm the h*ll down. :) But just wanted to let you know you made my day.

I am desperately waiting for subs for ep 2. This drama is a rare gem and SJK - I knew he had it in him after seeing his incredible performance as young Sejong, but to actually see those chops in the leading role, all complexities so well realized - wow.

PS. And YES, OMFG, how insanely perfect and chemistry-laden was that scene??? The moment he saw her face, it's like his whole world tilted. Gawd, they couldn't have done a better job, that was pure perfection.

My roommate and I spent the first half of this show yelling at the characters pretty much non-stop--and then the second half clinging to the edge of our seats. It sure knows how to suck you in!

Though I still cannot comprehend how Ma Roo 1) explained his presence in the hotel room and his killing of the dead man, and 2) got off with only 5 years. Working theory: he pretended to be a gay prostitute who killed the guy in self-defense. I welcome other explanations but seriously that is the only one that makes a lick of sense...

actually korean prison sentences are pretty lenient usually, even for really heinous crimes -_-. like esp if you are a minor. i dont think ma ru was a minor when he was arrested but he was definitely really young so. esp if he was able to argue that the murder was a crime of passion ie accidental instead of premeditated. korea's legal system is nothing like the United States basically. otherwise Maru would have gotten at least 10 years.

Note to self - if want to murder someone, do it in Korea :)

Wow, I knew the legal system was VERY different, but had no idea sentencing was that different too. Fascinating!

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I know sentencing is more lenient in the UK too - I read British news a lot and people there get sentences for murder that to my American eyes are crazy short.

Date: 2012-09-17 01:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kilerkki.livejournal.com
I guess Padam Padam is the only other kdrama I've seen that talks about the sentencing for a murder conviction, and if I recall correctly he didn't get the 16 years all in one go--it was something like 9 years and he was going to be released except then he got framed for something else and got a longer sentence, à la Jean Valjean.

Americans are a pretty bloodthirsty lot in regards to sentencing, though. I try not to read the comments on any news article on criminal behavior anymore--there will inevitably be a whole lot of advocates for the death penalty and for really horrible methods of punishment. Sometimes I am very, very glad we have the 8th Amendment.

I was surprised how much I liked this. Pleasantly so since melos aren't my thing but I love how understated this feels. And man, my decision to follow SJK's career after watching Triple was a good one! He turned what could easily have been an annoying character into a likeable rootable one on pure charm alone in Triple but I wasn't quite sure about how solid he was as an actor and his past couple of projects have really proven that while he's certainly really pretty, he's got chops for sure. I'm impressed by how much range he has as an actor too. And damn, that scene with MCW at the end. So much chemistry already and one of them isn't even conscious!

Yes, he really is wonderful -- all his characters are so different from each other, yet he inhabits each one of them.

So so so so perfect! It personally reminded me a lot of ALTK which of course means automatic love for me. The ending scene, where he's yelling at her to tell him whether or not her "daughter" has ever been in a car accident gave me chills- I love how with Song Joong Ki's acting you can pretty much pinpoint the exact moment Maru goes over the deep end. It's so sad, too, because he just has so much potential for good in him and then something happens that triggers him, he freezes over and yup, it's pretty much the point of no return. Episode two is even worse because you can SEE this terrifying resolve developing in his eyes and you just know he's preparing to completely let go of what little humanity he has left.
and of course I find myself rooting for him because SJK is so good at what he does and YES DESTROY THAT EVIL TROLLOP.

Also-- I love EG's secretary or w/e. I'm pretty sure he's only pretending to be gay or w/e so I kinda ship them a bit. He clearly cares for her despite her rough exterior so..

I sure am loving the angst and your select scenes recap is great. I loved SJK in Sukyunghwan Scandal and The Tree With Deep Roots but was wondering whether he is sageuk only actor but apparently not. YAY!

Hmmmm Park Shi Yeon is so very very pretty. That's all I can think of when I see her.

Honestly, my expectations for this drama were very high and this first episode disappointed me somewhat. The backstory (when he was still a Nice Guy) felt too rushed. I would have appreciated some flashback scenes of him and ~Park Shi Yeon~ so that I could understand WHY IN THE WORLD he would make such a sacrifice.

Did he seriously give up his career and his little sister (who is an orphan?) just to save a shallow woman?

Anyways, I agree on the chemistry with the other girl (Moon Chae Won). That's what I'm most looking forward to.

Re: "I take it you're not a sageuk fan". No Mousie, I am like the sageuk anti-fan. I make sure to stay 1000 feet away from them. I just lack any patience for them!

I watched 80+ ep Jumong and Yi San so to me, Faith moves lightning fast ;)

I've heard that the second episode of Nice Guy sheds more light in the backstory. This writer likes doing this - diving off the deep end and then returning back and exploring what happened in the past - she did it in both A Love to Kill and Sang Do.

I love his acting. He can act just with his eyes and when he smiles he´s just adorable, but at the same time he can emote all that darkness and vulnerabilty so well. Most probably I will check this out because cast seems to be just excelent, not just SJK but also both of leading actresses.

OMG. i had my skepticism cap on but I LOOOVE THIS AHHH. I am so glad! I really wanted to see Joong Ki in another drama and I wasnt able to watch Tree With Deep Roots because I just am not a sageuk person at all. but this is fabulous! and my heart was so breaking for him because he really would have been an AMAZING doctor he was so smart and so natural at it. It makes me sad that he either couldnt afford to go back to med school or the stigma of having a criminal record prevented him from gaining entrance into any respectable school or hospital. (knowing Korea this is very likely the case) and man if that wasnt sad enough, the girl he did it for didnt even keep contact with him or wait for him or anything. Honestly I dont hate Jae Hee I pity her. I mean if she was cold and heartless it would be different but she's not. she clearly knows she's selling a part of her soul to be successful and considering the concrete wall/ceiling that is there for women in Korea to gain any kind of power via business politics and maneuvering I also dont blame her for stooping to such low methods even tho I deeply resent the affect it had on Maru. and not just cause he's my adorbs Song Joong ki oppa ;_; and it is SO weird seeing Joong Ki so serious and miserable when he's normally a chipper cute darling on variety. its the Joo Won affect hahaha. But omg I LOOVe Eun Ki. I am like screaming with delight in every scene she is in. she is exactly my kind of heroine. I hope they dont turn her into a weepy dishrag as the drama progresses. vulnerability is fine but she should never lose her bite! and I am like u said he doesnt fall in love with her because she is saintly and pure and will cure his dark soul but more likely because he sees in her a kindred spirit in suffering and darkness. not to mention they both hate Jae Hee lol. ugh I cant wait for what's next *__*

I don't like Jae Hee because of the combo of prison/rich guy thing. If she ditched Maru to marry someone rich, I'd say whatever, but if you accepted someone going to jail for you (because she agreed, it's not like he did it on his own), you at least owe him a 'sorry' and an explanation...

EG is awesome!

I just watched this episode and think I have found a new drama love, even though I don't normally go for intense melodramas. SJK and MCW are knocking it out of the freaking park. They're like little amazing gorgeous acting aliens come to planet Earth to teach us how to emote. Please let them breed with each other and build an army of preternaturally talented/outrageously beautiful actors for future generations to enjoy.

Couple of thoughts:
*I got the impression that Jae Hee was full of shit when she told Maru the reason she wasn't going to turn herself in was because of her career aspirations. I mean, I don't think she's evil enough to be completely lying about that (and her panic was too real to be totally manufactured), but her interaction with Eun Gi's father after the incident led me to believe that she committed premeditated murder as per his instructions and then manipulated Maru into taking the fall for her. Either way, it's certainly telling that she'd be willing to let him take the fall for her at all.
*I find it interesting that, for all Eun Gi's loathing for Jae Hee, JH seems genuinely concerned about Eun Gi's well being. I'm not sure if that is just an act, but for now she really seems to want to form a connection with EG.
*I LOVE your thoughts on Maru's wall coming down when Eun Gi falls on him coming out of the bathroom, and how quickly those walls go right back up when the flight attendants come to check out the scene. SO MUCH CHEMISTRY and yet EG was literally unconscious during the scene. How is that even possible? See initial comments re: acting prodigy aliens.
*I can already tell that I am going to become totally fangirly head over heels obsessed with SJK by the end of this. I was already incredibly impressed with his acting in S-Scandal--seriously, it's amazing what he did with his tertiary role. He actually stole the show for me in that and I've been waiting to see him act his heart out as a lead in something...looks like I've found it!

LOLOL

I agree, she clearly was in that room to get some info on orders and probably the struggle for that paper got a little out of control (also, how telling of their relationship dynamic that Maru doesn't even wonder what his gf was doing in a room with another man. He really is a fool for love).

I do wonder why, until the end of ep 2, JH did try to be nice to EG. Maybe in case EG inherits?
