Answer to 1997 - eps 7-14 thoughts and caps

I pretty much binged this weekend (I was holding off until it was clear who the endgame OTP was going to be, I don't like shippy uncertainty). Warning - a ton of caps behind the cut (of varying sizes as the files were of varying sizes).

Does anyone else feel that this is more of a jdrama than a kdrama, back before jdramas went all procedural or wacky?

This relationship will never be not creepy. She is in high school (and immature for her age) and he's in his late twenties at least. Yuck!








Yeah, angst central.























Every time Shi Won was doing all these unthinkingly physically affectionate gestures, I would feel awful for Yoon Jae.





I love all the scenes between Yoon Jae and Joon Hee - in a way, it's a mirror of YJ/SW - only this time, YJ is the one unaware that his best friend is in love with him and unthinkingly breaking his heart (when JH tells YJ he likes him and YJ assumes he is joking - ouch!)























This sequence! SW is walking home and is terrified that a potential robber/rapist is following her and calls YJ. And he bolts out, losing a shoe, completely not noticing that as a result of a fall, he's bleeding badly...ohhhhh. Honestly, if she is oblivious after that, she is the Queen of Oblivion (and she doesn't even have Yoon Jae's excuse of assuming everyone is straight and not even thinking his BFF can be gay, seeing that it's conservative Korean society in 1990s).


































































Is there any way they can end up together? Please?











Heart. Break. Oh, and Tae Woong is creepy. I am sorry, he may be a great brother, a genius inventor and a wonderful philanthropist. He is still a creep. An adult who wants to date a high schooler is creepy, as a default.








This scene! Gibber gibber! He finally tells her everything - how felt, how long he liked her, how he was going to confess to her only to find out his brother likes her. And she is emotionally overwhelmed (I get the sense she subconsciously knew, only was pushing it aside - not only is she 18, she is an awfully immature 18) and asks him if they can stay friends instead. And it kills me, yet it feels so right, when he tells her (I am paraphrasing) "Do you know what it means when a man tells a woman he loves her and pours his heart out, even though he knows she doesn't love him back? It means he never wants to see her again." Ouch. It hurts so good.
























































They meet again after seven years! I am generally fond of timeskips but especially here because Shi Won desperately needed to mature (she is actually the least relatable character to me, as a high schooler - her stalkish fixation on a boyband, including breaking into their house or starting a fight with fans of others and other insanity make me want to smack her and tell her to freaking study. Ahhhh, I am too old).

















Can the be an OT3? Please. I also loved the little comment Yoon Jae makes about growing up without parents...

OMFG this scene! She asks, again, if he still likes her and he asks her why she asks. And she tells him she likes him 'Not as a friend. But as a man.' His face! Her face! My face!!!! The thing, I totally don't blame him for not reacting - not only has he been so badly hurt (and he's an enormously emotionally-self-contained person with big barriers, to start with), thiis is so far from anything he expected...

















This drama seemingly sold me on the idea that everyone ends up with their high school sweetheart :)





SW apologizing to JH for liking YJ even though she knew JH liked him too. I loved this scene. And Joon Hee is such a wonderful person. And they don't know, but Yoon Jae overheard! I was terrified he'd say something awful to JH or act awkwardly around him (I didn't think he would but you never know).




















But he doesn't! ILY, YH! And he feels awful when he remembers his never noticing (that should make him more empathetic to SW).

If it wasn't for the kissing scene later, this would be my favorite scene in the episode - Joon Hee selflessly setting Yoon Jae's head on straight about loving not being a choice and he and SW love each other and so should just stop regretting and get together. YJ's face when JH tells him sometimes people can't tell if you like them...

This is by far my favorite show this year! I want happy endings for everyone, especially Joon Hee. My heart breaks every time I see his unrequited love for Yoon Jae. It's hard to believe that this is the first role for many of the actors as they inhabit their characters so believably well.

I think YJ running to rescue her from the rapist guy was what finally broke through SW's obliviousness. She seemed pretty dazed by his injuries - I think she finally realized then. But tried to ignore it until he confessed and she couldn't pretend any longer.


I feel so badly for JH & part of me has been secretly hoping a big twist at the very end would have SW with him. lol

Re: rescue. Yes, and then she went to sit and stare at the wall and think about it in her house. The thing is - she wasn't ready to figure out what (if any) feelings she had for YJ, so she stuffed it back into the recesses of her mind (she is good at that actually - he kissed her episodes and episodes ago! What normal person doesn't know/ask why/what is going on when a guy kisses you?)

I do wonder if she'd ever realized she reciprocated YJ's feelings if he stuck around, being available.

I am fine with SW/TW if YJ has an awakening, realizes he is gay and in love with his best guy friend, and ends up with JH.

It does have that jdorama feel (ah, now I want to see Orange days again for some reason)
I wish Japan would wake up and realize that majority of the doramas they are creating now are baaaad even though there can be certain treasures in the past seasons like Shinzanmono and saigo kara nibanme no koi.

I don't find TW creepy, he is obviously a great brother and such a mother hen towards YJ that it's sweet to watch but I do think he is projecting his feelings that he has of Shi Won's sister on Shi Won and I think Shi Won knows that.
Hak Chan and his porn video making is hilarious, with the money he can be gifts to his gf. I can't really decide if it's awww or hmmmmm.
And on another note, I adore SW dad. He is hilarious, I love when they end up screaming at each other for the silliest things.

Hak Chan is not a realistic character at all but I don't mind, I find him too amusing.

Hak Chan is kind of cute but the character doesn't feel as "regular" as the rest so I don't get the writers in his case.

Well, not all recent doramas are bad but at the moment 99% of what comes out in Japan is bad. Sure cable channels like WOWWOW create great doramas but they are rarely subbed. Marks no yama for example was really intense and dark.
And Arakawa under the bridge was a great surprise as was Yamada Takayuki's hilarious so called low budget rpg dorama uusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro that is getting a second season.

I can't even put into words how much I love this drama. I think it might become my #2 all-time favorite Korean drama (after QIHM, of course!).

These last 2 episodes in particular put my heart into a blender. Seriously, SO MANY EMOTIONS! How I laughed, cried and screamed as I watched these puppies!

I'm with you regarding Tae Woong (Yoon Jae's brother)... he's a creeper. Urgh, I can't believe he kept pushing it all those years! That's not romantic persistence, that's just stalking! Even Yoon Jae didn't push Shi-won into returning his feelings... he knew she wasn't emotionally mature yet and so he stood back for YEARS and let her grow!

This week we're only getting one episode (extended length though) and the last one will only air NEXT week! :(

I think Yoon Jae and Shi Won are endgame... but this writer is too smart. There might be a few surprises up the road!

My wish for the last two episodes: tons of kissing and baby-making, Yoon Jae and Shi Won as endgame, more adorable Hakchan scenes aaaaaaand a VERY HAPPY ending for Joon Hee (I really hope he can find an amazing love).

This drama is totally going into my top 10 of all time! I love love love everything about it. I'm amazed how it can seem so real.. the actors are doing a great job!

Tae Woong is creepy alright. In my opinion, the death of his girlfriend affected him psychologically. I mean, falling in love with her younger sister?? That's just unbelievable to me.. it must be because he sees her ex in her younger sister, and that's just wrong.
But he's a good person so he'll end up with Dr.Fart (heh :P) and live happily ever after and leave Shi Won alone.

I squee-ed nonstop in eps 13/14... OMO YAAA!! ShiWon/YoonJae!!! The confession!! Their kiss!!!!
I want to kiss the writer and the director for this drama, seriously!

There's a whimsy to this show that reminds me of Soulmates.

TvN is totally the bomb. Flower Boy Band, then Queen Inhyun's Man, and now this. And that's just 2012.

TaeWoong - thumbs down. As a teacher, I find his fixation on ShiWon beyond icky. Students who don't know better do hit on teachers, but it's the teachers' responsibility to draw and maintain boundaries.

Joonhee - how can anyone not love Joonhee. I am so glad that the writer gave us Joonhee deciding for himself to move on. The relationship between him and Yoonjae, with Shiwon - all so awesome.

This drama is going to be tied with SUFBB as my favorite of the year, definitely. It has that same deftness of writing--rooted in character and so sure-footed that you trust the writers completely. I don't trust kdrama writers very often, so it's so nice to sit back and just know that the quality isn't going to lag.
