Aug. 29th, 2012 04:57 pmHaven't had a chance to watch anything due to lack of subs but I have realized I need to stay out of every Faith v. Arang discussion on the internet. Mainly because even though I enjoy Arang, I am obsessed with Faith so every time I see 'Faith sucks, Arang is amazing' post or variation thereof, I get irrationally annoyed at Arang and I do want to be able to enjoy the latter - the way it's going, I am going to end up loathing it just on principle and that is not the way to go.
I wish fandom would stop comparing the two - they air on different days so are no competition for ratings and, other than being a fantasy period drama, have little to nothing in common.
It's reminding me of the bad old days of when IRIS and You're Beautiful aired (at least they were at the same slot and in competition for ratings) and the fandom seemed to have split into YAB and IRIS camps, with the former being the much more loud one and piling on IRIS like it was going out of style. I was a big fan of IRIS and all this made me go from being OK with YAB (though it would have never been a huge thing for me) to just reflexively loathing it and everything and everyone associated with it down to the last fiber of my being. All due to fandom stuff and nothing to do with the drama itself (I rewatched it years later and while I can't say I loved it, it was a cute little trifle without the fandom baggage).
So, note to self - stay awaaaaay from comparison discussions! It's like Bangel v. Spuffy - bound to never end well.

I heart both dramas equally, so this is really beyond me.

Honestly fandom wars just make everyone appear to be immature idiots who lack basic manners. I remember the IRIS vs. You're Beautiful flame wares - insane and ridiculous.
With Faith and Arang, you have two fantasy period dramas, who are completely different. Faith is more a historical drama with fantasy elements while Arang is more a fairy tale for grown ups. Very different animals and very different stories. They may air at the same time, but they air on different days - so they aren't fighting for the ratings. Actually, both are doing very well in the ratings. So, as a fan of both (though Faith a bit more than Arang) I'm very happy for the casts and crews - the dramas are both hits. Why fight when we fans could be celebrating that they are both hits in Korea and both well made?

I like Arang, I'm obsessed with Faith but I don't think it makes sense to compare the two. Arang is a completely different feel and it's gorgeous and interesting in it's own right. I just happened to let my brain obsess and salivate over Faith instead.
Also YES is climbing my top female drama leads list of badass women fast!!

Date: 2012-08-29 11:17 pm (UTC)As far as Faith and Arang go...well, they're wuxia-esque fantasy sageuks with extremely popular male leads, serious/angsty plots that are surpisingly funny due to the actors' timing and delivery more than anything else, and both main leads have great chemistry. But while I could rattle off a long list of surface simularities (based on 3 episodes of Arang and 2 of Faith) I don't see what the deal is? They really don't strike me as alike at all, aside from being in the same genre.
I suspect some might be that there are some fans burned by the time travel sageuks and Arang isn't a time travel sageuk, while still being a fantasy sageuk, but I can't really use first hand experience with that because I haven't seen any of the other time travel sageuks. Leaving out the issue of ageism (because I'm tired of it, even though I think it's a major contributor) I suspect some might just be Lee Jun Ki fans happy that he's back? Who knows.
I missed out on the Iris/You're Beautiful wars because I wasn't watching either, but I believe it.
