Apparently Christian Bale showed up to visit the victims of the Aurora shooting in the hospital and also to visit the memorial to the victims. With no entourage or interviews or anything.
Besides being impressed, I kept thinking as I watched the video, "Aw, that cutie from the Empire of the Sun is all grown up now into a hunk of a guy, with scruff to boot."
I've been crushing him since Empire of the Sun, reading about this on twitter is making me brimming with respect.
It's not the first time he's doing sth along the line, during the promo rounds for War of Flowers he's tried to visit Chen GuangCheng under any media radar, fighting guards and got himself punched and hit, a seriously scary situation.
I love this man. I know some people can only remember the negative press he has had, but I have immense respect for him, tbh. He seems intense about things - especially his job - but he otherwise tends to come across as a really straight forward guy. He was my first celebrity crush and still is my main one :D
Yeah, I think a lot of people at places like ONTD are very black-and-white (and very young). Sure, he has his issues - who doesn't? But considering his background, he is surprisingly functional. He's an amazing actor and, as a bonus, he seems adorable with his wife and daughter.
Good for him. Maybe I can try to stop hating him now. (if ur wondering why I hate him then look no further than the time he blew up on a movie set and started screaming like a lunatic at anyone and everyone and basically scaring the shit out of everyone and being unstable and dangerous. which is not only unprofessional and incredibly disrespectful behavior, its the kind of shit he could only do as a white man and still get movie roles because if he was a black guy or a woman his ass would have been gone)
I think he, like most people, is a mix of good and bad stuff. Tbh, whatever he is like in RL is little of my concern as long as I love his movies. (ETA: I mean, sure, it's great he visited the victims and it makes me respect his actions, but if he was an awful actor, that wouldn't make me want to watch his movies, and if he was a good actor who acted like Charlie Sheen in his time off, I'd still watch his flicks).
Your comment about him getting away with stuff because he's a white man - not really. Whatever it is he did/could/maybe got away with is because he's a star. I think as long as someone makes studios/labels money, they don't care (look at Chris Brown, who seems to be doing A-OK after beating Rihanna to a pulp, which is a lot worse than any amount of screaming). I've heard horror stories about J.Lo. but yeah - as long as she makes $$$, she isn't going to be touched.
Actually Chris Brown got away with that, one because he is a man, and two because the person he hit was a black woman, if he had beaten a white woman his ass would be IN JAIL. Just look at the public outrage that was launched at Kanye for just interrupting a white woman during an awards ceremony. If you dont think racism and sexism is a factor for who can get away with what and who is successful in hollywood than I honestly dont know what to say to you. Like I like you mousie but that is just not how it works. Yes it helps that Bale makes money, but Winona Ryder was still pretty famous when she did that shop lifting thing and she was never given a big role in a film since. Or the fact that Kristen Stewart doesnt smile in some pictures so she has an image as a cold bitch in the media (even tho those who work with her say she is a lovely person) or Megan Fox doesnt agree to do some of the demeaning things Michael bay wanted her to do in his film and she is castigated in the media as an ungrateful whiny hell bitch. While men who have done far worse are loved by the media and entertainment industry. But going back to Chris Brown, he got alot of people making comments about what he did (one in fact was seth rogen who made a very pathetic speech about it during an awards ceremony) yet the fact is Michael Fassbender, and Sean Penn (among others) all hit their wives/girlfriends and the media loves them, and hollywood loves them, and there hasnt been a peep from anyone in the public about it. I think that has alot to do with their skin color and their sex. Furthermore, I cant watch a movie with Fassbender (for example) in it or at least not a prominent role in it because when I see his face I feel sick and I feel angry. I dont feel that way looking at Bale, so I dont avoid his films or anything but yeah I cant compartmentalize like you can for this kind of thing either, so it does matter to me the things that actors or directors have done. (I never saw a roman polanski movie before that whole debacle, and while I might still see one if it appeals to me I'll make sure I'll do it in a way that garners him no monetary benefit)

Date: 2012-07-25 03:14 am (UTC)It's such a tragedy and some of the media's reaction to it just sickens me. I'm glad someone was able to do something positive for them.
