Oscar Noms are out and this is going to be the year where I am absolutely not interested. Seriously bored.

Their pic line up is just? Why should I care? The only movie on that list I liked a lot is Good Night and Good Luck. and it's hardly a movie to evoke strong reaction. None of the movies from my Top 10 made it on this list except for GNAGL. I haven't seen Munich and don't want to, I hated Crash as cliched, simplistic, preachy Oscarbation (hey, it worked!), I loathed Capote as a movie that just rubbed against the grain and Brokeback Mountain? I might get lynched by my flist but my main reaction was a meh-ish "OK."

How would I have been more interested in the ceremony (because Oscars' main concern is keeping me happy, of course): a nom History of Violence which was brilliant (and a nom for Viggo and Maria Bello for being brilliant in it), or for Ralph Fiennes who was the best thing about The Constant Gardener and tore my heart out, or any noms for The White Countess. A screenplay nom for Serenity, some kind of a nom for Rent, more for King Kong than vfx, Star Wars nom not just for make-up. Costumes for Kingdom of Heaven. Heck, why not go all out and nom Batman Begins for BP? As it is, *yawn*

I only have two strong reactions:

1. I can't believe Star Wars did not get nommed for effects. Argh. They had amazing, unbelievable effects. What do we get instead? Talking beavers of Narnia.

2. Howl's Moving Castle for best animation. It won't win it, as the award is Wallace and Gromit's to lose but it's the only movie from my Top 10 to end up with a major, Best Picture-like nom, so hey.

Huh. When we saw Brokeback, I thought it was meh-ish okay, too, and I thought you liked it better than me. ;P

It's one of those movies where the more I think about it, the less I like it.

Serenity got snubbed too? Not surprised.

RotS - I don't give a damn what you think about the overall quality of the prequels, but there is absolutely no way RotS did not deserve an FX nod.

Like I said elsewhere, every time I think the Academy can't impress me less, they one-up themselves.

Ugh. Don't even get me started. It had incredible, incredible effects. That first battle alone was the best effects sequence with the possible exception of PJ stuff I've ever seen. Grrr.

The "Within a Minute" documentary on the RotS DVD should be required viewing for all those Academy fluffheads - I don't see how anyone could come away from that without a very heightened appreciation of the sheer technical effort that goes into even ONE scene in these movies. (Though if anyone could, it'd be the Academy.) The opening battle? Grievous? Mustafar? Any one of those alone should have earned a nod.

I wonder if this bigger snub than usual is because of GL's "Screw the Critics" acceptance speech when RotS won at the PCA?

Could be, but it really should't matter. *bangs head against wall* It had such mind-blowing effects that...

*bangs head some more*

Ah, but that would be giving the Academy credit for actually awarding stuff based on merit. ;)

Seriously! I am awaiting the moment where Lucas' ILM studios transform into a giant robot and crush the Academy ;)

I'd pay to watch that. Too much fun!

Oscar people dislikes star wars and lucas----the original star wars was the only on to get recognized by oscar---and it lost to "Annie Hall" so not surprised by snub.

I think scifi in general is never taken seriously---why do you think people who praise BSG say, 'it's not scifi, it's drama!'...because they can't believe that scifi flicks can be ever worthy of anything beyond FX. Serenity will never be recognized as anything more than a story of a ship in space. If anything cerebral does come out of the scifi genre, the highest compliment people will pay to it is, "It's not *really* scifi 'cause it's good"

However, Health Ledger is very cute so I'm moderately happy that Pretty Boy gets more coverage! :)

Heeee.

Personally, I think scifi is like any other genre. Has tons of horrible stuff but when it's good it should be recognized as such. World peace would be nice too :)

I can remember a time when I loved going to the movies and now, I look at this list and realize I haven't seen any of these, nor do I care much that I've missed them.

Also, if you don't live near a large city, you're basically screwed with the best picture nominations. I don't think one of them has played near me yet.

Yeah, they are all indies. Seeing them isn't a problem for me (I live in a big big city) but not all indies=wow. Most of these are blah blah blaaaaah.

Ralph Fiennes deserved a nod, I don't care what anyone says. If Keira Knightley is going to get one, Fiennes deserves one too. And Michelle Williams? Where did she come from? I don't even remember anyone mentioning her beforehand.

Star Wars getting shut out...someone just had it in for that franchise, because while I think King Kong beat it, it deserved a mention. I'm surprised Batman even got nominated for anything.

Oh yes. Don't even get me started on Kiera the giggler.

The Star Wars snub I just don't get.

cliched, simplistic, preachy Oscarbation

I'm usually a big loather of stuff like this (*cough*Forrest Gump and Shine and Gladiator and 90% of hte Best Pic winners of hte last 20 years), but I *loved* Crash.

I really really wanted to like it, but they pulled out every racial cliche and it was all so touchy-feely and had more coincidences than Dickens. But I know I am in the minority on that one...

I think BBM was only okay. I was much more impressed by The Constant Gardener.

Yes, I liked TCG more even though it was also preachy. It was prettier and better acted (Ralph!)

My reactions to both movies sort of flipped as time went on. I left BBM feeling satisfied and content, while TCG left me contemplative and heavy-hearted. As time went on I realized how much better TCG was than BBM.

Hey, I was quite shocked (and ecstatic) when Spirited Away beat stuff like Ice Age, so maybe something like that will happen again! :)

But Matt Dillon was in Crash! And he has roots in my town! I must support him! I haven't actually seen it, though. I did like the clips that I saw.

Won't get lynched by me. I hate inconclusive endings, and Brokeback Mountain had one of those. Give daughter blessing. Send daughter off. Sniff nasty shirt. End credits. Ruined the entire thing.

ROFL.

I think the movie would have been much better if it ended earlier, with Ennis finding the shirt. Oh well...

Agreed... But it was proof that neither Jake Gyllenhall nor Heath Ledger are the ditzes they appear... there was definite angst in there. But that was all, no room for anything else.
