My take on upcoming kdramas
May. 13th, 2012 06:36 pmI WANT I WANT
Arang - I adore fusion sageuks, the leads are Lee Jun Ki (back from the Army, rawr!) and Shin Minah, there is a murder mystery element and, most likely, a romance between a magistrate and a ghost. How would I ever not be in?
Bridal Mask - Joo Won (!!!!!!!!!) plays a freedom-fighter against the Japanese in an adaptation of a famous manga. Everything I've seen about it indicates that it's going to be as if Capital Scandal and City Hunter mated and had an amazing baby.
Faith - Lee Min Ho in a period drama!!!!!! OK, now I calmed down. About a modern plastic surgeon who travels back in time. You know what I said about fusion sageuks? It goes double for time-travel dramas. Plus the whole 'modern woman goes back in time' is exciting. I like Kim Hee Sun, the female lead. And some of the supporting cast are ridiculously hot Sung Hoon and Lee Philip. Plus, to top it off, the writer is Song Jina, who wrote Eyes of Dawn/Sandglass/Legend/Slingshot/What's Up, i.e., she who can do no wrong.
Nice Guy Song Joong Ki gets his first lead role, opposite the amazing Mousie favorite Moon Chae Won. This would be enough, alone, to get me excited. But in a romantic revenge melodrama by the writer of Sang Do Let's Go to School, A Love to Kill, Thank You, and Will It Snow on Xmas, i.e., one of my favorite writers, and with the story of a man who seeks to use a woman to get revenge on his ex only to fall for her...yum, YES PLEASE.
The Great Seer - I don't know much about this one, but a period drama starring Ji Jin Hee means I am in.
Timeslip Dr. Jin - I am a sucker for fusion time-travel (duh), love the trailer and the stills and the cast - Song Seung Heon, Jaejoong, Park Min Young etc.
MAYBE
Ghost - I hate medical dramas but love So Ji Sub and Lee Yeon Hee. Plus, I think they will have ridiculously hot chemistry. So if the drama focuses more on their relationship (or non-medical angst etc), I am in.
I Need Romance 2 - I pretty much hated the outcome of the first one, and I didn't even watch it. But I live in hope that in this one, the gal won't go back to the cheater. Plus, I find Lee Jin Wook about the hottest thing on two legs and it's a rare opportunity to see him as the lead. Jung Yumi is gorgeous and they will make a totally eye-candy couple. So yeah, let's just hope his character is not a repeat cheater.
Vampire Prosecutor 2 - Simply because I haven't yet watched the original. If I do before this comes out, I will be all over it as I have yet to hear a single bad thing about the first one.
YOU CAN KEEP IT, THANKS
A Gentleman's Dignity - I think it's illegal to be a kdrama fan without loving Jang Dong Gun, and I do, but the male Sex in the City set-up leaves me beyond bored and so I will be skipping his small-screen comeback. Sorry!
Big - Hong Sisters are uneven for me, and none of their post-Hong Gil Dong work is in my love column (Gumiho came close, being so cute). Plus, I find the body-swapping plot grating without having even seen a second of this, romcoms are rarely my thing, and I appear to be the sole person in dramaworld who loathes Lee Min Jung, the female lead. All of this screams AVOID in big neon letters, despite my love of Gong Yoo.
Golden Time - Medical drama. Yawn.
I Do I Do - I don't like workplace dramas, I don't like younger man-older woman romanced outside of serious drama a la Majo No Jouken, all the stills I've seen yell their cutesiness, the knocked up plot does not interest me to put it mildly (contraception, use it!), I am unfamiliar with the male lead and ambivalent about Kim Suna. It all screams skip.

Date: 2012-05-14 02:48 am (UTC)Just a while ago I was getting sick of kdramas because everything felt stale , but now it totally feels like Korea is stepping up its game-- all the premises seem so interesting and out of the box lately, both currently airing dramas and especially with this onslaught of new ones. I love the creativity, of course, but I am probably going to die from the burden of watching ALL of them.
Really really excited for Dr. Jin + Nice Guy.

Date: 2012-05-14 03:58 am (UTC)Arang for plots, Nice Guy for JK and Gwang Soo, Moon Chae Won too, and the angst, and hopefully a lot of kiss scenes from JK.
Dr. Jin, for some history lesson, LBS, LSY and JJ, sure, the other two too.

Date: 2012-05-14 04:30 am (UTC)the only one i don't agree is big, mostly because of my love for gong yoo trumps by annoyance towards lee min jung, plus my puppy suzy is on it too and i want to see how she improved. i'm hoping for it to be good.

Date: 2012-05-15 01:35 am (UTC)If the female lead was anyone but Lee Min Jung, Big would be in the maybe column. But she makes me see red.

Date: 2012-05-15 01:39 am (UTC)Re: contraception. But KSA is supposed to be in her 30s. I'd think it'd be simple to follow the 'wrap it or keep it away from me' rule. Especially since Koreans don't have 12 kids per family so contraception must be heavily in play.

Date: 2012-05-14 04:19 pm (UTC)Bridal mask sounds awesome but I'm just worried that once again all the supposed "japanese" are villains, I know my history so yes I know the time was difficult and terrible but not all japanese people were monsters like in most historical korean dramas.
Dr Jin, loved the japanese version but still iffy about the korean version. I think the 3 leads are all very weak actors but I know I'll love the supporting cast Lee so yeon looks absolutely gorgeous and LBS is great.
I'll watch Big, because I can's seem to dislike the Hong sisters.
And I'm watching INR 2 because Jung Yumi, not touching Ghost though.

Date: 2012-05-14 05:21 pm (UTC)arang is going to be crazy, lee junki, finally, and shin minah is such a delight. i think it'll be dependent on the tone but if they get it right it should be awesome.
i hope big surprises us all, i mean gumiho is the cutest fucking show to ever exist and i haven't seen best love yet but i'm sure i'll be entertained if nothing else, but something less comedic and more like hong gil dong – i mean, that was so ambitious, and it paid off so damn well. ;\

Date: 2012-05-14 06:21 pm (UTC)I'm tentatively hopeful for Big because I've recently rewatched Coffee Prince and Gong Yoo was so excellent in it acting wise and I'm counting on him to make it good.
Have you finished watching My Girlfriend is a Gumiho? It gets really good in the latter angsty sections!

Date: 2012-05-15 10:04 am (UTC)I think that Japan and Korea should stop doing medical dramas entirely. JIN was OK and I like some alternative (into Cleopatra right now) or light medical dramas (kira kira kenshui) most medical dramas are 100% boring, even with a good cast.
