If you, like me, fell for Song Joong Ki's incredible performance as young Sejong in Tree with Deep Roots, it might be a present for you too!

SJK has signed on for his first drama lead role, and what a role! He will star in the upcoming Nice Guy, a revenge/melodrama by Lee Kyung Hee, the writer of Mousie's all-time favorites like Something Happened in Bali, Thank You, A Love to Kill, Will It Snow on Xmas, etc etc.

!!!!!!!

SJK plays a man who just goes through life getting vengeance for an awful breakup by treating women like things and playing around with them, until he meets a blind girl played by...drumroll please...Moon Chae Won.

!!!!!!

I love love love MCW. Ever since The Princess' Man, she has become one of my favorite young actresses.

Pair her with SJK, who has incredible chops and can have chemistry with a stone, stick them in a drama by LKH, who always has such meaty roles for her characters and such passionate, complicated storylines about broken souls, and I am in heaven.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been sitting on this for about two weeks now :P (longer if we include the other rumored project for him) so I'm relieved it can be discussed in the open for one thing. A couple of clarifications:

* The drama has not been picked up yet. It's favored to take the Wed-Thurs spot after Bridal Mask in late August (and if The Equator Man's extended, in Sept), but it's just one of the candidates and it'll probably be some time before KBS makes the final decision.

* Very little's known about the characters or the plot, but according to someone on DCgall who skimmed through the synopsis (iow, could be subject to revisions):

a) leading man in love with secondary girl
b) secondary girl marries heroine's father
c) heroine's amnesiac (not sure how) so leading man approaches her to mess up with her memories and make her fall in love w/ him (only to fall in love himself? that's speculation for now).

Rather makjang plot, so will hinge on writing/characterizations, casting and direction, as usual. Writer Lee Kyung-Hee wants PD Kim Jin-Won (who won acclaim for the recent 4-parter KBS drama special Ordinary Romance) to direct, and I'm told he could be just the PD to make this work.

* LKH did not write Bali, that's the work of the duo behind Fashion King. (Hard to believe, I know.)

Thank you for the clarifications. Makes so much sense than the thing I posted. And SJK is going to be great at dark, if Tree was any indication.

FK guys wrote Bali? What happened? Did they spend the entirety of the intervening years stoned?

(I think I confused Bali with her other stuff because she worked with Bali's PD on Xmas).

Forget the 'will be a while before final decision's reached' thing. It's been confirmed (both casting + the W-Th timeslot post-Bridal Mask), and it's straight from the horse's mouth (KBS). SJK wrapped up shooting his film two weeks ago, so this is happening pretty quickly.

re: FK: they've lost it? Your guess is as good as mine.

Yessss!!!!

Honestly, FK was just so bad. I am fine with makjang, but somehow makjang and boring at once? That's a unique combination. I am beginning to think fashion kdramas are doomed - both Cinderella Man and Style were appalling.

ooh that PD is really good!!! That plot is just a tad makjangish for my tastes my if LKH can add just enough complexity to her characters it can be wonderful...also praying that Moon Chae Won confirms...cuz it has to be either her or Moon Geun Young to rock this role for me

Haven't seen Ordinary Romance but the writer/Lee Kyung-Hee has, and I'm told his style would complement her writing very well. Signs are rather conflicting though as to what her drama will be like this time around. The plot (the little we know) sounds makjang and more in line with MiSa, ALTK, Xmas, but the production company hints at something closer to Thank You, Sangdoo.

KBS/the network has confirmed SJK, MCW *and* the time slot today. Now it's just a matter of whether the writer can get the PD she wants.

Awww I love SJK and I'm so glad he has a lead now he deserves it but I really have no interest in revenge/thrillers esp when the revenge just involves being a douchebag to women. like wow, i can think alot of guys who do that and they aren't even trying to get revenge! lol. no i'm just salty cause my ideal role for song joong ki is playing the cute dongsaeng in a noona romance. and being cute and sweet and adorable. and this is like, the exact opposite of that -_- but hey, maybe i'll give it a whirl anyway. i do adore him to bits. not just as an actor but in general since he was so adorbs on Running Man.

Apparently he goes after his old girlfriend's stepdaughter (I think old gf married a man much older than her). So I guess it's only one woman? Not that it excuses it but at least he's not leaving swathes of ladies in his wake :P

See, your ideal drama would be my nightmare and vice versa - I am in what kdramas would describe as a noona-dongsaeng relationship myself and have been for 12 very happy years, but on screen it bores me unless it's an angstfest like Majo no Jouken.

Oh.My.God.

I can't wait for this! I was hoping for MCW to be in another project but I never imagined SJK would be paired with her! This is going to be amazing!

MCW hasn't confirmed yet, her reps are just saying she's considering it. But I'm hoping she'll accept it! She was freaking awesome in Bow.
I think the story was more he gets revenge on the girl who dumped him by using a woman who suffers from amnesia but ends up falling for her instead.

Thanks, that description makes more sense.

Hope MCW signs on!

How does this sound so cliche and yet so my thing? I wonder how they'll mask SJK's eternal boyishness but I'm all for a bowl of melo angst esp w him and MCW. She's beyond darling.

He was scary in Tree, boyish looks and all, so I think they'll pull it off.

OH MY GOD. SHE'S BLIND ON TOP OF EVERYTHING? ajskdjfaksjdkfaskdf reminds me of mawangyes

This just confirms that this drama was written by my id. it has everything i love: SJK, MCW, revenge, melodramas, cold/broken protagonist, probable angst, etc, etc, etc-- and all this is written by LKH (who can seriously do no wrong for me and is the only writer that has made it twice on my top ten favorite dramas list) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently I was wrong and she might just have amnesia? And is his old flame's stepdaughter? Perfect perfect perfect.

I love LKH.

Which ones are in your top 10?

Thank You and ALTK (which I know a lot of people dislike/think is overly melodramatic but I absolutely adored-- so atmospheric and gorgeous and guh. Bokgu is still one of my favorite protagonists, so tough but also so broken at the same time. I hope SJG's character is like his). I also really liked Bali, Sangdoo, and WISAC until it all went to hell.

Yes, another ALTK fan! For a long time, it was my favorite kdrama. It's so complex and dark and poetic.
