dangermousie: (Spring Waltz OTP by scanky_chops)

Don't they look adorable?

I think I am in the minority on my flist in being absolutely rabid about this. Most people seem to go 'ugh melo' or 'eeek Yoona' but I cannot wait!

In part because I do adore Jang Geun Seok (he made me a rabid convert with Marry Me Mary) but mainly because this is a romantic melodrama from the Four Seasons and Snow Queen PD. I would be excited no matter who he cast.

I am very fond of well-done romantic melodrama and kdramas rarely do these any more (Padam Padam can qualify as one and guess who adored it?). A well-done melodrama is not screaming and lunacy - what it is, to me, is a mood piece, everything evoking a feeling - acting, story, cinematography, almost like poetry. Spring Waltz, Snow Queen, A Love to Kill, Goodbye My Love, Beautiful Days, Winter Sonata, etc. are all my favorites.

And nobody makes poetry-as-melodrama as well as the man who brought to us the Four Seasons dramas and the sublime Snow Queen.

I cannot wait for this. I just know it will be amazing.

Have a teaser:

If you are me, this looks perfect.

Was wondering about the retro clothes and hairstyle at first, but of course they're playing the parents as youngsters as well. I can't really imagine Yoona growing up into Lee Mi Sook, though.

LOL how does that happen? Lee Mi Sook can eat Yoona and all her stylists for breakfast :P

Hihi. Yoona as Lee Mi Sook's daughter is believable, but Yoona as a younger version of LMS is a bit dodgy. Of course I'm still thinking of LMS as BYJ's evil, scheming, but totally awesome cousin in Untold Scandal. Her character in Love Rain will probably be a lot nicer.

I am totally excited. First i love melodrama, and i love JKS. I am not excited that they cast Yoona because i don't know if she has improved but i will still watch it even if she cannot act well.

Found this in weibo (cr neineilove) Funny. Looking at the way the 2 characters hold the umbrella, it makes me laugh. The father is such a gentleman

I wasn't very interested before but the teaser is awesome. It's nicely shot and I like the sweet romantic vibe.

I just want a lovely, old-fashioned romance. This PD knows how to do those.

I think with the right roles, noobie actresses like Yoona can actually do well with their sweet naivete. Won't make them a great actress in the long run (cough Han Hyojoo cough) but like Spring Waltz, the project will probably benefit with having youthful earnest acting rather than experienced techniques.
I'm a melo junkie so this is also totally up my alley.

Yup. The only roles Han Hyo Joo was ever good at were Spring Waltz and Brilliant Legacy. A certain ingenue sweetness really goes a long way.

I tried to watch A Love to Kill once cause you said it was great and I love Rain. But I got like 12 minutes in and just burst out laughing. I am just not meant for melodramas I think. but it was just SO makjang and over the top serious. Like his brother just walks off the building at the end? wtf? and then he blames the girl for it? and he manfully angsts while punching things? I just cannot. So yeah i realized if i watched I wouldnt be able to take it seriously at all and it was kind of boring and dreary for me. although part of me wanted to watch it and just laugh. i am terrible i know. feel free to pelt me with rocks XD but yeah i think its kind of how rom coms dont do it for you. for me melodramas just kind of dont resonate with me at all. seriousness is fine but it needs to have some self awareness and some levity now and then and not be riddled with drama cliches or i just start rolling my eyes and or getting bored. I still kind of want to try Love Rain even though I am pretty much guaranteed not to like it. but I like jang geun suk enough to give it a whirl. Speaking of drama, I finally caught up with Shut Up Flower Boy Band and its gotten so miserable! there's only two eps left so i'll keep watching but i feel like the joy and life has been sucked out of it, but i like to think they had to rock bottom so they could rise again twice as strong like the phoenixes they are.

I am not going to pelt you with anything because this is how I felt about Flames of Desire where everyone went 'masterpiece' and I was laughing at the overwrought ridiculousness.

This said, I'd stay away from Love Rain if I were you. It won't even have A Love To Kill's damaged characters, I don't think. Melos are, by their very nature, earnest, and this will be doubly so. Have you seen the four seasons dramas?

I mean, I love it but it's probably not for you.

No you are right its not I dont expect to keep up with it. Its weird cause Mars was a melodramatic manga and drama but I liked it. That was a rare case though and it was also a long time ago. That said if Korea every decides to remake Mars I am all over it like white on rice.

Mars is, however, very different from any kdrama in plot, feel, narrative flow etc. So I can see why you'd love one and not the other.

I'd say kdramas are never going to touch Mars' topics but now they have cable, they definitely would. So, who would we cast? I am thinking Moon Geun Young for Qi Luo or maybe Jo Boa due to my Shut Up hangover. Or Seo Woo. Hmmm, who for Ling? If Hyun Bin or Jo In Sung were waaaaaay younger...Hmmm, I adored the leading guy in Shut Up but I am not sure he has the look. Kim Bum? He was amazing in Padam Padam. I'd say Lee Min Ho but I say LMH for everything. Dilemmas! :P

YES dream casting is fun ok for me I totally picture Kim Bum as Rei! Because Rei was really bright and lively on the outside and dark and vicious on the inside. and I soooo think Kim Bum could do it! Just the way he looked in padam padam was very Rei like. I dont think I'd pick Moon for Kira although I like her. Is Lee Da Hae too old? I just think she'd be perfect but she's probs not really at an age to play teen characters anymore. She could def do it if they set it in a college tho! and if not her then Sohee. No actually I'm joking I dont know at all if Sohee can act but she definitely has the look for Kira.
I'm surprised there was never a Mars jdrama. Alot of Japan's school dramas are really intense and deal with difficult subjects, like LIFE and Kingyo Club. (If I was casting a Mars jdrama I would set in college so I could do Aoi Yuu but if not Aoi Yuu then Narumi Riko or snap Ayase Haruka! and For the guy, Toma! or Miura Haruma and maaaaybe Mizushima Hiro. he's like my 3rd choice and way behind the other two)

LDH is much too old! I love her but I think she's 30 or something. Even for a college version, that's a bit much.

Re: jdrama. I don't think Toma is good-looking enough but I like the rest as choices.

From: [identity profile] sisterjune.livejournal.com
Oh oops she is 30? XD I had no idea. I thought she was much younger! Gosh for korean actresses I dont really have alot I like yet. So I guess I dont know.

True Toma is a bit plain, whereas Rei was supposed to be very beautiful. Honestly I feel like the best choice would be Miura. Ugh now I really want it XD and for the girls I think Ayase would be the best too.

SUPER EXCITED. i completely agree, melos are mood pieces and we haven't had one in a while. the cast is younger than usual for it and i think it usually works better with a slightly older cast, but it looks swoony and dreamy and perfect. ;3 aaaahhhhh i really hope it delivers! also: LEE MISOOK! \o/

I really want it to be good. Except Padam Padam I can't even think of a decent melo in the last couple of years.

Heee, the angst- kids of old-time lovers fall for each other. Delish.

did padam padam have a good ending? all i saw of it was stills of that scene with the wings :o

I KNOW RIGHT. and it cracks me up that despite his hair and the addition of the earring jang geun seok looks just as pretty in both incarnations.
