dangermousie: (SUFBB: Hyun Soo by timescout)

The boys leave but you can tell there is new tension because, as it looks, three of them have been found wanting.

Woo Kyung doesn't make it better by ranting that JH should have ditched everyone and signed on. I can sympathize with her - she's in love with him and is being irrational, but I just want her to shut up and go away. Maybe if she was his girlfriend, but she isn't! And isn't it treating the others like dirt? JH is actually very patient, I'd probably have told her to take a hike a long time ago.

Out of all of them, I think Hyun Soo is the most conventionally ambitious - a part of him clearly wishes he ditched and signed on. I think that's why I like him so - he did stick with his bandmates despite his doubts.

Cutest thing ever! She tries to sneak up on him with a boiled egg, gets foiled, flustered and hiccuping, and he cures the latter with the same egg. It's adorable and sweet and funny and I love that even on such a horrid day, she can make JH feel happy without even trying.

Never can have too many shots of the boys!

This scene, with the tensions flaring high (largely because of Ha Jin, who really should learn when to shut up), was quite painful because I am so invested in these characters, but quite realistic with the recriminations and defensiveness.

Soo Ah tells Seung Hoon for the millionth time she doesn't like him romantically. I am beginning to think the boy has a hearing problem. Sometimes you can't get someone's love despite hard work. Oh, and she adds she thinks she likes someone else. EEEEE!

Do Il and Ji Hyuk - Do Il is telling Ji Hyuk not to hold back because of them and go for the contract and JH explaining why he never can. You know, I think out of all the remaining band members, Ji Hyuk is closest to Do Il. Maybe it's the steadiness, maybe it's the fact that both of them have bad/absentee parents and families they are desperate to escape.

The boys regroup and decide to work hard and show the music exec that they are all good and if it doesn't work out, at least they gave it their best try.

Working hard.

Oooh, I loved Shil Ba pushing those classist little jerks around.

The exec says she is signing them all up! (Long story)

Only, they need their parents present and I love that JH and DI exchange that look - I really do think they are bound by their similar parental circumstances.

I think this is the cutest thing in the world - her cracking an egg on his head and running away giggling, with his chasing. And I love that she makes quiet, burdened JH laugh like that.

Too bad they come across his friends. He is so confused and defensive and also hurt at the reminder Soo Ah was Byung Hee's muse, he lashes out and says hearing it makes him sick and she is not invited to their party, and it's understandable why he's acting out, but it is hurting her - they are both so believably young, making mistakes and missteps, correcting them quickly, making new ones, but being in love anyway.

The guys at the contract signing. I laughed to see Hyun Soo be such a typical teenager with 'omg, my parents are so uncool' paranoia.

And then Yerim showed up and I about died! In between swooning and thinking that the boy has really high barriers to let someone in, I was incredibly amused how Hyun Soo's 'too cool for school' attitude was undercut with a steady 'folks, don't embarrass me in front of people!' vibe. It's hard to be a cool rebel bad boy when your Mom asks for the girl's autograph. LOL.

The rest of the boys' families. I laughed like a maniac when Do Il's mobster boss father showed up. But even then, Ji Hyuk's mother didn't bother to show, just sending over a signed permission. WTF is wrong with her - his family situation really seems beyond insane - a mob boss is a better parent!

Quite a contrast to Ji Hyuk - Seung Hoon has no problems ditching his bandmates in his quest to become famous to compete with JH.

That was ugly - all of JH's pent-up jealousy (even his bandmates think SA and SH are dating) coming to the fore, and Soo Ah blowing up at the both guys and telling them she has enough on her plate without either of them, so to go away.

Woo Kyung, you are testing my patience! She is telling JH he can never be with SA because she was Byung Hee's muse. WTF! First of all, sure, you are so disinterested and motivated by caring for Byung Hee. Yeah, right. (She says she didn't mind JH with other girls, but I severely doubt it, and also this time he's in love and she knows it, unlike whatever went on before). More importantly, SA is not property, BH's or otherwise. What, because BH liked her (but it never went anywhere), she's supposed to be a nun?

Ji Hyuk thinking and looking for Soo Ah. And coming to a decision.

He runs around everywhere, frantically looking for her.

And finds her.

I love how forthright she is (that she doesn't know what he thinks and so she's going to give him space. Though face it, girl, you did the backtracking first) but what I love even more is his response:

JH: I don't know how things will turn out either!
SA: What don't you know?
JH: Whether this is right. My head is upside-down and backwards. I'm going crazy...because I like you.

AAAAAHHH! It just felt so awkward and real and blurted out because he couldn't hold it in any more.

ILY, drama, so frelling much! I love how things don't drag, how characters and relationships make sense, how you own my heart. And now I have to wait until Tuesday for the next ep? Surely that's a horrible punishment!

U know what's precious about the possible Hyunsoo-Yerim loveline? It's that she seems so mild if not simple-minded compared to his quick-temper ways. It could be her zombie acting, but I love how everytime he barks, she's neither offended nor afraid. She just looks back at him with these impossibly ingenuous eyes and continues asking if he's ok. Seriously, she'll be the one uncomplicated thing in your life if you take her, Hyunsoo!

lol - for some reason, all I could see during that first egg-cracking scene was her sweatshirt with big "hooters" eyes. :D

I agree, this drama is too awesome.

Dear drama, please make all these OTPs you're hinting at HAPPEN!

Also, I wish hairdresser girl would also be hit by a truck. I get so mad whenever she opens her mouth!

YES!! He's so snarly and she's completely blase which really nonpluses him. I love her! I think she's pretty much the ideal type for him because she's so calm (yet determined) - anyone who's drama queen or easily cowed would be disaster as far as relationship with Hyun Soo is concerned - I mean, his good heart IS covered in a gruff gruff exterior :)

I love the series, but I have to say I'm not loving the writing for the female characters. First of all, Woo Kyung. She knows Ji Hyuk is not into her, she just won't acknowledge it, so she just chases him around and around, making herself utterly pathetic in the process. I actually like her loudmouth personality and her friendship with the band, but her single-minded, no other goals pursuit of a guy who just doesn't like her like that makes me feel contempt for the character, not sympathy. I'm also disappointed that on a show which is pretty good about characters changing and growing, she's not doing any of that -- it's just the same thing over and over again: she sees evidence that Ji Hyuk isn't into her/likes someone else. She gets upset and admits it to herself. Next time she sees Ji Hyuk, she's reset back to her pretense that he's her boyfriend. That's just dull now.

Second, Su Ah. The character has a lot of good traits, but she's kind of lacking in spark besides those good traits. She really is kind of the beautiful if downtrodden princess ideal for our hero to win. I wish she had goals for her life, something she wants to do. So much of the show's focus is on the band and their hard work in pursuit of their dream that it seems very obviously lacking when the female lead doesn't have any dreams or goals of her own, at all.

Finally, that annoying sidekick of hers who only exists to provide the gossip and the classist snobbery towards the band so that Su Ah looks good by not being a snob. On a show with not too many female characters, it's again disappointing that they've chosen to make her nothing but comic relief and a way to make Su Ah look better, right down to the deliberately comical appearance.

But, to leave on a positive note, at least they've shown one female character in Yerim who is a performer and part of the music world. And I like that SH's sister, although kind of creepy, is becoming key to the band's future. But I'm guessing my longing for one of the guys to encounter a female bass player or drummer who rocks hard core and is focused on her music, not on a guy, is not going to happen on this show...

If you're gonna say that about Woo Kyung you have to acknowledge also that Seung Joon is doing the same thing (albeit more quietly as per his personality). I am all for calling out the writing of the female characters on this show which is flawed, but lets not play double standards.

For Su Ah I like her alot, she's a very level headed girl. She did what I always wanted a girl in a love triangle to do and thats clearly tell the one she doesnt like that she doesnt see him that way and then when both are acting like jerks calls them BOTH out. That said, I was thinking myself today that I wish Su Ah was passionate about something. I get the focus is on the guys so I am not super sad we dont get a complex story for her because there just isnt space in the drama (esp with all these new characters they keep adding) but it would be nice if they gave her at least a hobby of some kind just so she seems a more well rounded person. she did do drawing which she seems good at and it would be nice if that was brought back into the story at some point. like her doing a portrait of Ji hyuk and him telling her she's a good artist and should pursue it or better yet her deciding to do it on her own. she's smart and a hardworker i'm sure there's many things she could succeed at. it would be nice if the drama spotlight some of it
and as a girl who always loved rock music and love girl bands and lady musicians it would be nice to see at least one woman even if she's like a one shot character that plays an instrument or in a band or something. i mean we got like a two second shot of a girl band during the rock festival but thats it so far.

I guess its a testament to how good all the other elements of the drama is for me that i am still enjoying it immensely even though these are all things that would annoy me alot more in other dramas.

I definitely agree that Seung Hoon is doing the same thing as Woo Kyung, no question. But he's got some other stuff going on with his character beyond pursuing an uninterested object of affection -- he has other relationships and interests, including his own pursuit of music. Woo Kyung hangs out with the band and pursues Ji Hyuk -- that's about it for her. Also, there's a variety of male characters on the series with different characters and goals, but Woo Kyung is one of just two major female characters on the show. If it were a series with lots of major female characters with different personalities and goals, just one of them being all about pursuit of a not-interested guy wouldn't be as bad IMO, but it seems worse when there's just two main female characters.

I know this is the boys' show, and I love the boys! I just wish that the female characters that are present, however few, had goals and dreams to strive after that were as much a part of who they are as the band is for the guys. And I would love to see a female rocker chick in this world that's so focused on how much music and performing means.

But I really do love the series -- it's done a great job of drawing me into the world and making me care so much for the characters and their relationships. I mean, I'm feeling for Teacher Kim! I love that the guys tried to keep him from getting in trouble because he's as lost in the school as they are, in a way. it's such a good show in those respects.

I don't have a problem with female characters here, I love them all.

Soo Ah - I like that she's so no-nonsense and clear-headed and straightforward. It's freakishly rare in kdramas, even those staring adults. I am quite happy she's not into music other than liking to listen to it - I mean, everyone else is somehow music-mad :)

Yerim - admittedly, we haven't seen too much of her yet, but what we saw, I liked. She is famous without being snooty, hardworking, talented, and utterly unfazed by puppy Hyun Soo.

Woo Kyung - I don't have a problem with her - by secondaries standards, she's not bad at all, certainly better than Seung Hoon - at least JH never told her he doesn't like her and SA has been repeating 'I don't like you' to SH for eps and eps.

SA's friend - she's the equivalent to Pyo Joo for me.

But MMV and all that.

My 2 cents if they mean anything :)
I agree about WK. I liked her for being devoted and spunky but lately she's lost her spunk plus she's gone from devoted to posessive. I have no problem with her continuing to like JH regardless because her feelings are her own damn business. But JH's feelings are also his own damn business so she needs to stop pushing her opinions onto his life choices.
I think you should cut SA some slack though. She's had a lot to cope with. She's done admirably paying for rent and putting food on her table for someone as privileged as she was. So surviving the next day is gonna be more of a priority to her than say, lost dreams And aspirations (maybe her art?). But I suspect once JH pursues his music and moves away, SA will be thinking about her own future. Plus, it's totally ok for a teenager to not have a passion. When I was 17 I only vaguely knew I was gonna attend college and major in something

re: Su Ah. Totally. You want the girl to have passion on top of trying not to crumple at losing dad, house, one's entire way of life, promising future, and respect? She'll be lucky if she doesn't collapse or flunk out from trying to pay for the roof over her head or putting food on her table. She has more jobs than the drama depicts yet still manages to remain real and steady? If only most people, let alone high schoolers, can do half as much.

Oh my god the scene with the parents was hilarious. Ha Jin and his parade of noonas, and kyung jong and his loud chatty mom. and then there was hyun soo and his dorky parents. too cute. and we finally saw Do il's mobster papa! I was actually surprised he showed up. who would have thought a mobster is a better parent than Ji hyuk's mom. I hope Do il and Ji Hyuk's family issues are if not fixed at least addressed in some meaningful way before the drama is over. it would drive me nuts if it was left forever hanging. Also I felt so bad for Ji Hyuk, no wonder the guy has self esteem issues his own mom doesnt pay him attention. poor baby let Tai noona come and heal you <3

The scene with Ji hyuk chasing Su Ah was so cute I about died. I bet she wanted to be caught too lol. I totally get Ji Hyuk;s worry about her being Byung Hee's muse and were he still alive it would be a bit of a betrayal to pursue her but since he's dead and she never was his girlfriend and she's a person not a muse. then Ji Hyuk should realize its totally cool! I cant wait till the band finds out, 10 dollars says Hyun Soo will be a dick about it. lol.

the end where Ji Hyuk confesses he likes her was so great, it was so natural like you said. i just love how natural so many of the conversations and gestures and expressions are in this drama. its raw and real and rough around the edges just like the boys themselves. (Also seung hoon is hella pissing me off. Su ah said she doesnt like you! GIVE UP. creep. i hope she doesnt ever sway for a moment. although with ji hyuk as your bf why would you ever lol)

I was totally surprised DI's dad showed up (I loved that moment of quiet shared panic between DI and JH when the rest of the boys are celebrating). And honestly, how awful must JH's family be? I cannot even imagine. It's a miracle the boy is well-adjusted.

Tbh, though, I am fine with not getting more about the families. I think it's background color/forms who the boys are, but if we get too much into it, it has the potential for makjang.

When he runs after her, it was the most adorable thing ever, agreed. And even more agreed that she wanted to be caught and kissed senseless.

Oh, I am sure Hyun Soo (and possibly Ha Jin) will be dicks about it, and Do Il and KJ will be totally cool :)

Seung Hoon is annoying me. I mean, short of tattooing it on her forehead, she can't make it any clearer. Stop being a stalker, dude! Maybe Pyo Joo's insanity rubbed off on him.

ARGH...this episode was made of pure awesomeness.....I don't know why I keep getting surprised but it just keeps getting better and everytime I think i can't get more addicted I am proven wrong.

So many good things in this episode so i am just gonna gush and take up ur space...lol. SA and JH ...there was just so much going on there with the chemistry I could feel my computer slowly start to sizzle. JH had already fallen for her but it just took up until this episode to figure out just how much he wanted SA. I find that he can be having all these issues but when he sees SA he lights up. However if him and SA are haaving a tiff its like everything else in life loses its charm. Like the prev epi when he couldn't practice with his band bec SA was on his mind, or in this episode when his friends mentioned SA and SH he couldn't even swallow the drumstick and had to leave. It's like he has become addicted to her. It would be interesting to see how this comes out int he open with his friends and who he is gonna choose when they ask him to pick between them and SA.....oh JH I feel like he might pick his bros......k will stop the wild speculating now...see what this show is doing to me?
Can't wait for next week!!!

I know, I shouldn't be surprised it gets better and better and yet I am.

I agree, SA can make anything bearable for JH - remember when they lost the contest? Even then, he was fine until she also said she wasn't into him (or at least that was the impression he got) and then he sort of spiraled lower and lower. Poor guy!

I think if he had to pick between his bros and SA, even if he picked his bros at first (though I don't think he will - he was going crazy in ep 8 missing her), it won't be for long. Also, I think once it's out in the open about him liking SA, Do Il and KJ will be fine with it and HS and HJ will probably bitch (though seeing that HS owes JH after the contest, hmmm....)

well I am all for the angst bec SunJoon does the hurt puppy look just SO well as long as there is some sweet pay up afterwards of course. Also I think when JH is jealous he lashes out and I think its because this is the first time he is feeling possessive of someone like this....(lol unless u count BH's attraction to SA and how JH was condescending to her).
I also loved the part when he disentangled himself from groupie girl after he saw SA in the street and then ran after her....Dude is a goner. lol.
And you are right if he does pick the bros he'll prob see SA with a guy again and go crazy begging her...sigh it's a tough spot.
